A twisty small-town mystery—with a killer ending. Reporter Leah Nash has a plan. She’s rebooting her career with a true-crime book. Until it’s published, she’s trying to keep her head down under the icy glare of her new boss at the Himmel Times Weekly. Then a local surgeon commits suicide–though but his daughter insists it was murder. No one believes her—not the police, the district attorney, or … police, the district attorney, or even her own brother. She asks Leah to investigate.
Hard-headed Leah has a soft spot for under dogs. She agrees to check a few things out. But the farther she follows the leads, the less things add up. Soon she’s at odds with her boss, her best friend, and the Sheriff’s Department. When her prime suspect becomes the next victim, Leah realizes that she’s hunting a cunning killer who has intention of stopping. But then, neither does Leah.
Dangerous Mistakes is the second standalone book in the Leah Nash series of complex, action-packed murder mysteries. If you like determined heroines, unexpected twists and turns, and a rich cast of supporting characters, then you’ll love Susan Hunter’s page-turning tale.

What Readers Are Saying …
“My second read in this series. Very talented mystery writer. It never turns out the way I think it is going. Well done!”
“This book and the series reminds me of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, in that we have a cast of colorful characters and family drama to offset the murder and misery. Throughout the story, there are fun, comedic exchanges, along with heartfelt moments with emotional depth.”
“Susan Hunter’s second book in the Leah Nash series is another page-turner. The characters are well developed and the story flows effortlessly. I thought I figured out whodunnit, but I was wrong. Can’t wait to read the next installment.”

There’s so much to like about the Leah Nash Mysteries that I’ve read so far. Leah, being the star of the show and the narrator of all the action, confides in the reader as she systematically breaks down a suspicious death, one assumed to be a suicide.
Right away, Leah’s instincts tell her it just doesn’t walk right. Doing what she can’t help herself from doing, she begins asking questions, following up leads and hunches, pulling one loose thread and unraveling this complex death while new threads keep appearing. But instead of listening to her convictions, her boss, local law enforcement, and even close friends and family tell her to give it up.
It is a testament to the writer that Leah has such strong principles and an incredibly sound mind, which continually sifts through every detail she comes across—whether she’s cognizant of it or not—always reordering the facts until the Rubik’s cube finally matches up all the pieces. I saw some real growth in Leah from the first book in the series, and I can tell the author has really hit her stride with this indelible character. She springs right off the page—alive, vibrant, funny and very smart. I can’t wait to see what she takes on in the next book!
Thoroughly enjoyed this second series Dangerous Mistakes by Susan Hunter. Leah Nash is an up-front, often in-your-face reporter always wanting all the information all the time from anyone and everyone in her small hometown of Himmel, Wisconsin, and she’s often on the bad side of the Police Department, as well as the Sheriff’s Office when she doesn’t back down from her investigations when they ask her to do so or when they don’t see eye to eye (or even close) on a case.
In this novel, she’s also finding herself on the outs with long-time close personal friend Coop and can’t figure out what’s going on, unless it’s regarding a possible drug case in the area. As her old boss at the newspaper died in the last novel, Leah’s now reporting to a new boss, Rebecca Hartfield, who she describes as a popsicle, a numbers-crunching and impersonal new manager for their small-town newspaper. She and Miguel are the only two reporters remaining on staff, as well as the ditzy receptionist Courtnee.
The mysteries in this one are plentiful, as are the twists and turns, and held my attention much more closely even than the first series by Ms. Hunter. Yes, there are statements at the end that make you want to read the third novel in this series, but the answers for this particular novel are definitely wrapped up for this one, so it’s not a cliffhanger as someone indicated.
I have already ordered the third novel in this series, simply because I enjoy Ms. Hunter’s writing style, her plot twists and turns, and her wonderful characters, Leah and Miguel, so very much!
Generally I find series books irritating but the story was well written.
Dangerous Mistakes is the second in a series set in small-town Wisconsin but is a stand-alone story. This is the first Leah Nash book I read. Although there are references to previous situations, it does not detract from this story and only made me want to go back and read the first book. Leah Nash is working for the local paper when she is contacted by the daughter of a surgeon whose death was attributed to suicide by the police. Isabel wants Leah to investigate and prove her father did not commit suicide but that it was murder. Full of twists and subterfuge. Just when you thought you had it figured out the author throws you for a loop. Will definitely read more Leah Nash books.
The title says it all. How speculation, even informed speculation, can be 100% wrong. Lots of red herrings in this book. Explores the mind-set of journalists and just plain ‘all of us’ who mis-read people and situations. All of us can take a lesson. Well-written and interesting to the end.
This book is a little different from what I am used to reading in that the main character is a reporter. She is hired to research a suicide murder and quickly surmises that this is not suicide. She is mislead through the entire book by the person who hired her to look into the murder. The ending is a real surprise and the entire book will keep you reading until the wee hours of the night!
I read this whole series – wonderful books with great characters and an easy read!
I liked this book so well that I ordered all of this series. It is written so well that it draws you in so that you have to know how the series ends.
I enjoyed reading about Leah, her crime solving ability and her propensity to get ito all types of sticky situations. She has a group of true friends that stick by her through thick and thin. I was sad to see the story end so quickly bought the next book in the series.
Enjoyed this author and have begun reading other books in this series.
Heroine was to be admired for her work ethic & spunk.
A well-crafted story and harder to predict than most tales I’ve read. My only criticism is the use of OK rather than ‘okay’. I liked this so much that I overlooked OK (which drives me nuts) and purchased the sequel.
I liked it so much that I bought the whole series and will look forward to more
