This book begins with a truly gruesome murder. Florida State Police Special Agent Amy Larson and her partner John Schultz are called to the scene located just outside of the Everglades. Just as they are almost ready to leave the crime scene after the medical examiner has transported the body and the CSI crew have processed the crime scene FBI Special Agent Hunter Forest shows up. The FBI hasn’t been called in so what’s he doing at this crime scene? Hunter Forest drove directly from a crime scene in northern Florida when he heard about this ritualistic murder. Hunter’s theory is that the murder in northern Florida was a practice run for John Schultz’s and Amy Larson’s case and he is warning that a cult is probably involved and that there will be more murders. The theory they develop is a cult is acting out a Doomsday plan/Apocalypse and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are in play. The Four Horsemen represent death by sword, famine, plague and the beasts of the earth.
The events in this book, Danger in Numbers by Heather Graham, are quite disturbing and horrifying which is par for the course in the thriller genre. It’s hard to imagine the depravity and evil of the perpetrators. It seems to me that books about cults are more prevalent today as a background for thrillers Cults are super creepy to me. This was interesting, well-written and action-packed.
I’m not sure what it was that captured me about this book. Maybe it was the setting. Maybe it was the uniqueness of the crimes that were being committed. The extreme detail. The grit and gruesomeness of the crime. Whatever it was, Graham has stepped it up a few notches with this captivating release.
In this book, she dives into cults and what people will do in terms of mind twisting and the religious fanaticism. The setting is creepy and perfect for the plot.
She adds in the right amount of pacing and ties in a romantic interest that I felt was well placed but a little downplayed. The character development was good, with plenty of questionable characters to keep you guessing along the way. The suspense level was just right and she captured me completely in this story. I could not stop reading!
Loaded with gripping detail and police procedurals that keeps you on your toes, Danger in Numbers balances the crime, heightened tension, and even ups the anxiety levels as you go through the story for a well developed and twisted read! Plus, the ending was awesome with a lead in to a future story. Hunter was an excellent character and I hope to see him in future reads! Well Done!
It was fast paced , a good story and the right amount of romance. It was a bit draggy at times but still an interesting. I liked the characters and look forward to more with this duo. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
Coming March 23, 2021!
Danger in Numbers by Heather Graham.
There is a past/present in the twin plots of this book that keeps the story moving and allows the read to engage with Agent Hunter Forrest on a deeper level. There is a commune of zealots, murder, trafficking, and time is running out to catch those responsible. Despite the seriousness of the crimes, we also witness a budding romance. It has been some time since I read one of Heather Graham’s books—I am so glad I did! A very enjoyable read.
I received this book from Harlequin and #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I try to always review books I enjoy so that my friends and others can enjoy them, too. #DangerinNumbers #NetGalley
