Two Native-American boys have vanished into thin air, leaving a pool of blood behind them. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police has no choice but to suspect the very worst, since the blood that stains the parched New Mexican ground once flowed through the veins of one of the missing, a young Zuñi. But his investigation into a terrible crime is being complicated by an important … archaeological dig . . . and a steel hypodermic needle. And the unique laws and sacred religious rites of the Zuñi people are throwing impassable roadblocks in Leaphorn’s already twisted path, enabling a craven murderer to elude justice or, worse still, to kill again.

A very good series. Characters build as series continues, but each can be read as a stand-alone.
Great job intermingling a cultural environment with good old-fashion mystery.
Great book. Used it teaching middle school history while learning about the Indian culture. Characters are the same age as my students and it gave interesting insight to the Indian culture in a story form. Hillerman was awesome!!
Love anything by Hillerman.
Cosy reading. One may even know more about the Indian way of life after having read it!
amazing series of books .. very interesting.. i learned a lot about native american culture and was very entertained by the mystery and the solution.. i loved every word of this book.. it is creative and very different from the stereotype mystery books so prevalent today .
Keeps up Tony Hillerman’s work in showing the modern, yet traditional , Native American culture, with equal emphasis on “Native” and “American”, while also being an entertaining mystery .
Typical TH Navaho culture novel
I have been a tony Hillerman fan for years and read all his books. This is another story that engulfs you in the Navaho ways. I highly recommend this book
Interesting, informative, but ending predictable.
Have not read it.
