“A hilarious, endearing novel.”—Los Angeles TimesIn Fannie Flagg’s high-spirited first novel, we meet Daisy Fay Harper in the spring of 1952, where she’s “not doing much except sitting around waiting for the sixth grade.” When she leaves Shell Beach, Mississippi, in September 1959, she is packed up and ready for the Miss America Pageant, vowing “I won’t come back until I’m somebody.” But in … I’m somebody.” But in our hearts she already is.
Sassy and irreverent from the get-go, Daisy Fay takes us on a rollicking journey through her formative years on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. There, at The End of the Road of the South, the family malt shop freezer holds unspeakable things, society maven Mrs. Dot hosts Junior Debutante meetings and shares inspired thoughts for the week (such as “sincerity is as valuable as radium”), and Daisy Fay’s Daddy hatches a quick-cash scheme that involves resurrecting his daughter from the dead in a carefully orchestrated miracle. Along the way, Daisy Fay does a lot of growing up, emerging as one of the most hilarious, appealing, and prized characters in modern fiction.

Some books you just have to keep reading. Fannie Flagg writes that kind of book. Relax. Read. Enjoy.
The book brought back memories of a much simpler time.
Loved this book. Good read if you like to see the world from a child’s perspective. So good..
I laughed my way through it.
All Fannie Flagg books are wonderful
Laugh out loud funny.
Funny and entertaining.
This is not my favorite Fannie Flagg book. I thought the part written from 12 year old Daisy’s perspective was excellent and really captured the experience of a girl that age, in the south in the 1950’s. The portion where she is 17 seemed rushed and the ending wasn’t as plausible. Overall a decent story but I’ve read better by Ms. Flagg.
I really enjoyed this book, funny, easy to read, wonderful characters.
Always enjoy Fannie Flagg – couldn’t believe I hadn’t read this one!
Fannie Flagg does not disappoint.
I’ve never met a Fannie Flagg book I didn’t like. Some may be better than others, but there are no bad ones. I recommend this one highly.
I liked this book. But I have read three other books of hers and liked them better.
Really outrageously funny
Fanny Flagg never fails to entertain. I can relate to this story because I was that age in the fifties and remember the stars mentioned, and the feelings when trying to grow up.
It was a fun read. I’m a big fan of Fanny Flagg, and I believe this was her first book. It’s not as great as I Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, but still entertaining.
I laughed so hard reading this book. I really enjoy Fannie Flagg’s books, she is a great story teller, and I always feel good after I read one. Recommended this to my book club.
I just adore anything Fannie Flagg has ever written. You can not go wrong reading this novel. Every wriiten by her is an Original.
