Twin sisters separated by the past are reunited by unspeakable crimes in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s throat-clutching novel of suspense… dark alley after midnight is just one mystery. The other is more unsettling: Macy is Faith’s mirror image—the twin sister she never knew she had.
Faith knew that she was adopted, but now she’s finding that her childhood concealed other secrets. Following the trail of clues Macy left behind, Faith and Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden make a shocking discovery on an isolated country ranch—a burial ground for three women who disappeared thirty years before.
They weren’t the only victims in a killer’s twisted plot. And they won’t be the last.
As the missing pieces of Faith’s and Macy’s dark lives snap into place, Faith is becoming more terrified by what she sees—and by what she must do to save her sister and herself from the past.

I really enjoyed this book! The story is just amazing, it is perfectly paced which just keeps you glued, anticipating the next move and the next murder! This is a romantic suspense, the romance is not all consuming, the best part of the book is by far the mystery. You won’t know who’s the bad guys are even if you try. Better yet, you won’t figure out their motives because the people who know something about the murders are getting killed, one by one. I love Mary Burton’s books, her ability to build such a complex plot with such different and strong characters. And in the end, all the pieces fit together like a really dark puzzle.
Cut and Run is an impressive thriller with a tense yet happy ending. Ideal for all romantic suspense fans that enjoy just a touch of romance and a lot of murders, plot twists, and a never-ending-suspense.
Identical twins separated at birth–a familiar trope for thrillers and mysteries. The two sisters, adopted by 2 different families, grow up in the Austin area but never meet because of their worlds-apart adoptive parents. The murder of the father of the FBI agent sets off the story. Lots of twists, some humor, and a romance that’s hot but doesn’t overpower the mysteries of kidnapping, murder, and child selling give the characters plenty of clues to chase. Despite the author’s adept attempts at distraction, hard-core fans will figure out the mastermind behind more than thirty years of crime. All-in-all, a fast-paced read with likable characters and plenty of forensic facts to add credibiity.
Very good book forensic doctor finds out she has a twin falls in love with the Texas Ranger it is a good book
CUT AND RUN….Mary..Burton
She believed his beautiful lies, a mother who didn’t believe she was taken, the parents who didn’t want her and the baby. He tells her a decent couple want her baby, then will the nightmare end she hopes.Jack Crow a recluse, collected old auto parts, and patched up peoples wound. now he was murdered, didn’t make any sense of who would want to kill him.Non stop suspense, good plot and good characters. A story that was unique, and holds ones attention to the end. She has a way with her writing, to bring a lot of angles into the story bringing a surprising ending. Suspense that will leave you wanting to read more by her. Given ARC by Net galley and Montlake for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
This latest from Mary Burton takes the saying “sins from the past” to a whole new level. The past comes crashing into the present and in turn affecting so many lives.
This was a great suspense that kept you turning the pages. A large cast of characters both alive and dead that where all pieces to large puzzle that at its conclusion had great ramifications.
I hope there will be a future book with at least the twin sisters story
Riveting from the beginning to the end! The sexy Texas Ranger and the medical examiner add fire to the story. I was drawn in immediately and couldn’t put it down! Great mystery with a little romance thrown in. I love the strong female characters as well.
To begin with, you don’t have to have read book one in order to enjoy this one (from the looks of it each book focuses on a different person). In fact, without realizing it, I had actually read the last book in this series first and didn’t even realize it until I prepared for this review.
This story was ……. interesting. It had the potential to be a lot more than it was, which was disappointing, and I wish the focus on the two “lead” characters hadn’t been so much on their relationship. Maybe I did miss something from the first book where these two are involved because to me, their relationship didn’t make a whole lot of sense. One minute they are having meaningless sex with each other (because he’s still grieving the loss of his wife who was one of Faith’s friends), and all of the sudden they realize they are in love with each other? I still don’t quite understand what prompted that sudden change of heart. I also didn’t feel like their relationship (especially them sleeping together) added anything to the plot.
I wish we could have spent more time with Macy. Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why the author choose to go the route they did, making things more complicated for the other players, but she seemed like such a strong and interesting character that it’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of that personality come out before she was taken out of action until the last few chapters.
As for the rest of it? I enjoyed the decades old mystery of what happened to the missing girls and their babies and how that played out. I think the person behind things was a little far-fetched, especially their role in the events that happened in the past. While it was a surprising twist, I don’t feel that it made a whole lot of sense. I also wish the “hired help” had been someone connected to the past as well instead of just someone hired to clean up the mess. I’m also still trying to figure out how Faith managed to get on the hit list when she didn’t even know she had a twin, much less the sordid details of how she and her twin came to be.
All in all, this wasn’t a bad story and I do feel like it will appeal to those who enjoy good cold-case mysteries coupled with a bit of solid detective work (which reminds me, why was Faith as a medical examiner running around questioning people?). I would read more from this author in the future.
Mary Burton Loved this audio book. Plenty of twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Right amount of everything! Everything!! Just the right amount of murder, mystery, romance, law enforcement, wealth, teenager, secrets, normalcy, and family woven in such enjoyably well written read. Highly recommended and planning to read more by this author. Yes, indeed … this book had it all.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Great book, loved the plot. Characters are easy to follow and enjoy. The narrator done an amazing job. I recommend this book.
Yet again I couldn’t put this book down. I have yet to read a Mary Burton book I didn’t like. I liked the romantic aspect of this book, it wasn’t your typical bit meets girl and they fall in love scenario. I was invested in the story and they characters from page one and completely entertained until the last.
Really fell into this book. Wasn’t quite sure who did it and was quite surprised with the end. Highly recommend..5 stars!
couldn’t put it down
This book would have been a 5 star for me except that midway in the book the author goes over the top description of a love scene between two of the lead characters. It was so out of place like falling into a porn show. The rest of the book is not like that. I would not let a few pages stop me from reading this book but for me, it made the act between these two characters cheap and it was not like that.
Fast-paced story about young girls going missing in Texas. The Texas Rangers do most of the investigating and realize that a spate of murders mean that someone is cleaning house to prevent witnesses to come forward. Great characters and lots of tension, lots of uncertainty. Some redemption. A good read.
I was totally caught up with the characters in this book. I really enjoyed it.
The pacing was fast – continuous action and suspense made this book hard to put down and I especially love Kat, a pregnant teen who has been in and out of foster homes, and ended up under Faith’s care. Kat’s rebellious but investigative personality was the main thing that got me engaged in reading the book.
I saw reviews about this book being sexy and romantic but I didn’t feel any of that, despite the author’s effort. Either it wasn’t as effective or I may have just wanted this book as a mystery novel.
Overall, the story was good so I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. Although my experience in reading it wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be, it may have been because of my lack of judgment towards Faith and Hayden as lovers in the story. That being said, I recommend this book to readers who love mystery, suspense, and thriller.
The author gives just enough clues to the reader so she knows who did it, but is not sure until the end. There was some romance, but it fits into the story.
Good enough to recommend. Interesting plot about separated twins and someone willing to kill to keep the secret. Also a nice love story that didn’t get to the point of being ridiculously and predictably steamy. My only problem with the book was that the final reveal made no sense. I won’t reveal anything here, but the truth about who and why the original foul seeds were done were not logical.
I REALLY LOVED ALL THE DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES IN THIS BOOK. MACY CROW IS UNFORGETABLE. CAN’T WAIT TO READ THE NEXT BOOK.
