This is book one in the Blood and Magic series and wow, what a series it will be. This story is filled with action, vampires and shifters. An excellent paranormal read. A new world has bloomed and humans are not at the top of the food chain anymore. Vampires and shifters have stepped out of the woodwork and made themselves known. The police refuse to deal with anything non/human. In steps Aria Naveed, mercenary. A shifter child has been murdered and the pack wants justice. Vigilante justice is the only justice these murderers will receive.
Aria is trying her best to avoid a war between vampires and shifters. She discovers a third party that might be a bigger threat than both of them. She tries her best to stay out of trouble while solving this case but it’s hard when someone wants you dead.
I think the book was well written and the story flowed well. It kept me interested and those sexy shifters helped as well. I love strong female lead characters with that no nonsense type of attitude. Aria is strong but not infallible, she has her weaknesses. This is what makes her relatable.
a great read about finding justice. Aria is a woman with fire abilities who is a mercenary to help people. when she finds a little boy dead, she can’t let it go despite her boss saying she needs to move on. but when the Pacific Northwest pack want to pursue justice, she picks up the trail and goes on a journey for vengeance where secrets are revealed
a great read. well dveloped plot with twists and turns. well deloped characters like Aria standing up for herself while still caring for people or James as a tough guy with a soft interior.
a great example of a fantasy world with different magical creatures of wolves and vampires and witches and shifters inside the real world setting. great selection of fantasy creatures with their own rules and laws and societies. I also loved the quest style narrative for the truth and justice in the novel which was a great touch and added to the dangerous sense of adventure. I loved the visual detail of the house. fast paced action. an emotive opening which draws you in to find out what happened and who did it. the only issue I would raise is that there is some repetition at times which could be reduced. overall, a great read and I would give it four stars
trying to stop a war while figuring out who is killing. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
A seven-year-old little boy has been kidnapped and Aria Naveed is determined to find him before it is too late. While trying to find the little boy Aria finds that there is more behind the kidnapping of a little boy than meets the eye. The more she digs into the case she finds a whole lot of secrets that someone doesn’t want to be brought out into the opening and is trying to kill Aria to keep it hidden.
When the little boy turns up dead finding out who could do this to a little boy becomes more than just a case to Aria it becomes personal. While working on the case she finds out that the little boy, Daniel is a shifter so with this new knowledge it brings in the Pack’s hunter, James.
James and Aria are very good friends. I think James would like their relationship to go a little further than just mere friends but unfortunately, Aria is not ready for something of that nature. You see Aria doesn’t trust people very much at all. She does trust James to an extent with him being one of the two people that know her darkest secret she still doesn’t trust him with her heart.
When Daniel’s body is found it looks as if he was killed by vampires. With this new knowledge, it is feared that there will be a war between the vampires and the shifters. Aria is working very hard at playing mediator between the vampires and shifters to keep this from happening.
I loved the world that the author has created in Cursed by Fire with the vampires and shifters coming out of hiding and letting the whole world know that they are indeed real. I loved that Aria can kick butt with the best of them but has a heart of gold. I do wish that her heart was not so hard though and she would have let James in just a little bit more though. I love reading books with all the paranormal creatures and humans live in the same world together. If you love a good story with paranormal creatures then you are going to love Cursed by fire.
Cursed by Fire is the first book in the Blood & Magic series by Danielle Annett. This is my second novel by this author.
Over a year after reading the third book, I was excited to get back into the series and see how the relationships all developed.
Aria is mercenary for hire who is grieving over a seven year old boy she was hired to find. With vampires, shifters and witches now known to the world, she is sure one of them was the cause of it.
“The poor kid had barely lived. Ever since the Awakening six years ago, when all things that went bump in the night decided to come out of the woodwork and play, safety had been tenuous at best. Kids like this, like seven-year-old Daniel Blackmore, were suffering the price.”
While her boss Mike is telling her to move on, she is unable to and wants to find the people responsible. She gets her wish when the Pack has her partner up with one of their own after finding out the boy, Daniel was part shifter.
Aria has a lot on her plate when a mysterious man moves in next door, people trying to kill her, as well as hiding her secret.
I really enjoyed this novel for what it was. While I noticed some similar ideas with other series I have read, Aria’s voice kept me interested and look forward to seeing Icarus, James and Declan again as well as how their relationship with Aria changes and develops.
Wow, love a good PNR! Great cover, engaged from start to finish! Action packed with humor, witty banter, and suspense! Aria is such a strong sarcastic heroine-love her! Can’t wait to see what’s next in this fantastical world!

Cursed by Fire is the first book in the Blood & Magic series by Danielle Annett. What a fantastic way to start a series- it was spellbinding, sexy and action packed. This is a brilliant urban fantasy/paranormal story full of magic, supernatural elements, vampires, shifters, harpies, drama, angst, tension, danger, conflict… and so much more. The characters are superb, I loved how they were so well developed and had their own unique personalities, quirks and flaws. The way they were written, and the way they continued to grow and develop as the story unfolded really made this story take on a realistic and entirely believable quality. The authors’ world building skills are exceptional, she wove so much into her world but I believed it all and never questioned any of the elements. There is a lot going on in the book, the story is quite complex with various threads all playing out at the same time. But Ms. Annett orchestrates the whole production into a smooth and seamless read.
Aria Naveed is quite a special young woman. She is a human with Pyrokinetic abilities that come in handy in her line of work, being a mercenary. She is called in to look for a missing 7-year-old boy, but when she finally tracks him down she discovers a mutilated body. It looks like his death was caused by vampires. But why? She’s determined to hunt down the murderer/s and bring them to justice. When the local shifter pack becomes involved and send one of their own to help her investigate, Aria soon discovers that there is far more to this situation that she could have imagined. Danger seems to follow close behind- lurking in the shadows and around every corner. Will she get to the bottom of it all? With secrets, lies, hidden agendas, bizarre murders, set ups, betrayal, and nothing adding up- Aria will be tested like never before.
I love Aria and James, and all the secondary characters- they are all so well crafted. The story has funny moments, emotional scenes, as well as witty banter and quips.
I really enjoyed reading this book, I devoured it in a matter of hours and can’t wait to continue the story in the next book. I really hope that Aria and James act on their chemistry and attraction in the next story. They are so great together and I think they’d make a great couple.
A fantastic read!
Thank you, Ms. Annett!
Cursed by Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Blood and Magic Book 1) by Danielle Annett is a paranormal fantasy book. This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it until the end. She pulled me right into this fantasy world and made me feel as if I was right there in the story. Her characters are creative and engaging. They took me on an emotional roller coaster ride right along with the twists and turns that left me sitting on the edge of my seat. Ari is a mercenary that was hired to find a missing child. After a couple of weeks of searching, the search didn’t end well for the child. She wants nothing more then to go after the person who did this. It is way to dangerous for her, she is told no until the child’s father hires her to find the killer. What will happen when her search takes her to the underground? Will she find the justice she is searching for? Who’s blood will be spilled at the end? I enjoyed Ari’s character. She is strong, fierce and has an attitude of a bad girl. She has a determination and just wants justice for this child and will nothing stop her from getting it. The secondary characters in this book are supportive to the story and help make the story flow into what it is. I highly recommend this book as it is fast reading and will pull you into a world of shifters. Find out if Ari finds her justice and who’s blood will be spilled for that justice.
Cursed by Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Blood & Magic Book 1)
By Danielle Annett
4 Stars
Urban Fantasy novels are very new to me but are fast becoming a favorite type of book. Being able to immerse yourself in these fabulous worlds the author creates is both invigorating and fun to read. Danielle Annett does a splendid job in Cursed by Fire of blending many different elements (shifters/magic/fantasy) to create a great book.
Aria Naveed is a mercenary with secrets. Her last mission did not end well and now Aria needs to help to continue. Enter James Shields. James is a wolf shifter who has worked with Aria before. As the two work to solve the murder of a little boy they discover secrets and lies and must trust each other which is not easy for either of them. The growing romance between them builds makes things even more complicated.
Cursed by Fire is a fast-paced book with good writing and engaging characters. Although at times some parts of the book seem a bit disjointed, Ms. Annett does a good job keeping the story rolling. For fans that love paranormal, this book will hit a lot of chords for you. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Loved it from chapter 1!!
