Book review of Cursed by Fire by Danielle Annett
We first meet Ari (aka Aria) in her office at Sanborn Place in a daydream that was really more of a waking nightmare.
Ari NEEDS to know who killed the Shifter child, his death haunts her! Her boss wants her to walk away but she just can’t. We meet her boss Mike who is really like family, her friend James which I sincerely hope she decides to make more than a friend. There is some SUPER slow burn attraction there FOR SURE!
In steps a mysterious hot guy and she feels a pull towards him.
Bad things happen, secrets are revealed and lost people found. Let’s hope Aria lives through it all!
Vampires and shifters… oh my! Bring ’em on! lol
Both Kick-ass heroine and hot steamy hero trying to avoid the inevitable chemistry.
CURSED BY FIRE by Danielle Annett is the first book in the BLOOD AND MAGIC urban fantasy series. I was hooked from the first page. I loved the setting (Spokane, Washington) and the characters: Aria is a pysker (has the ability to make fire with her body), Mike Sanborn, Aria’s boss, runs Sanborn Place and is father figure to her, Mel is a harpie who lives next door to Aria, and James is part of the wolf pack and a shifter.
The story opens with a seven-year-old boy who is murdered. It’s thought the boy was murdered by a vampire, and Aria is determined to find the person or persons responsible and bring them to justice. James partners with her because the murdered boy was a shifter, and James is representing the pack.
As James and Aria begin the investigation, there are two more murders, this time a vampire and another shifter. While Aria is investigating, she is attacked by a vampire and saved by a mysterious stranger. Turns out, he’s part of the Human Movement where Aria learns more about Psykers.
There is a surprise twist with the Human Movement. The attraction between Aria and James is a slow-build, but it’s obvious the relationship will continue into future books. I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the next in the series.
For the Audio: I really enjoyed listening to Cursed by Fire. The story was easy to listen to, had a few twists and felt comfortable for those that read paranormal stories. Nicole Poole did a fantastic job as a strong sleuthing merc Aria. Her voice resonated well for Aria and for the male characters in the story. The story concluded but left enough threads to keep going into more stories and for the listener to want more.
Minor spoilers:
I was confused a bit as there were constant references to a big past event. I had to go back and check if there was a previous book I might have missed, there wasn’t. Perhaps the next few books will give more information about the event. There were also some other places where I had to stop and wonder if Aria wasn’t being played and shouldn’t she know it. I liked that the story didn’t pull any punches as far as characters. When something bad happened, there wasn’t a miracle cure that had people surviving injury and even death.
Heroine is a mercenary. She is partnered with a guy named James who is a Pack and he is a Pack’s Hunter. Hunters are gifted trackers. Shifters in this book are infected by virus called Lyc-V (yup, same name) that changes their “chemical makeup” completely and gives them accelerated healing and regenerative abilities. Also Psykers-humans born with psychokinetis powers. and the Coven which is run by a queen vampire.Aria Naveed is one such human, she uses her abilities to investigate crimes. As bodies pile up, Aria learns more about Psykers and a new human movement. Things begin to get complicated and Aria soon finds herself in the middle of it all.
First book I have read by this author but I absolutely was glued to the book! Such good writing!! Now I must get the rest of them for the continued saga!
I give Cursed by Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Blood and Magic Book 1) by Danielle Annett 5 stars.
Urban fantasy is my favorite genre so I am very picky of books that label themselves as such. This book blew me away. Aria is such a wonderful main character. She lives in a world where all of the so-called creatures have come out of the closet. She isn’t exactly human herself. But her human side shows through when she is put on a very difficult case. She wants revenge. Know it looks like she will be able to legally get the justice she seek when the Pacific Northwest Pack hires her to find the killer. But things aren’t as simple as they seem. Will she track down the true murderer? And at what cost?
The story grabs you from the beginning and does not let go. You will rush out to buy the next book quickly just to continue the wild ride. There is so much action and plenty of mystery. Aria is not perfect, but her flaws make her a wonderful main character. I cannot wait to see more of her and the others in the rest of this series.
If you are a lover of strong female characters and urban fantasy, I highly recommend this book.
Cursed By Fire by Danielle Annett is book one in the Blood and Magic series. It is a gripping tale a shifters, murder and justice. This book will definitely leave you wanting more!
When Aria is hired to find a young boy she doesn’t expect to find his body. She also doesn’t expect to then be told not to look for his killers. When another group step in and hire her to track them down she is happy to oblige – justice needs to served to the people who did this.
Her hunt takes her on a journey that crosses into the realm of shifters and their packs and other supernatural beings. Will she be able to find the killer? And just how dangerous will her mission become?
This is the first book that I have read by this author and it is one I have thoroughly enjoyed. I liked the writing style and felt that I was taken on the same journey as Aria. I became involved in her life and her mission to find the killers. I wanted to know who was responsible and loved trying to guess what had happened. I didn’t want this book to end – I will be delving straight into book two!!
Cursed by Fire (Blood & Magic) book 1 by Danielle Annett is an Urban Fantasy Paranormal story that keeps you on your toes. Danielle has left her own stamp on a concept that is not new and has managed to give us a fresh spin on this paranormal world full of vampires, wolves and the like. This first book is a quick read but there is plenty that happens as the mystery and action, lies and deceit, intrigue and the unknown, along with a dash of romance sets a fine pace.
Our heroine is driven and believes and wants to do the right thing and that is solve the mystery behind murders but what she uncovers leaves her wondering how it could be.
I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to see where the story goes.
Cursed by Fire (Blood & Magic #1) by Danielle Annett was an emotional action packed read that has me flipping the pages.
The opening to this book hooked me. It was brutal, sad and got me right in the feels. Form then onwards the story picked up and the plot was underway. There was mystery, twists, turns, and the action as I said, was almost non stop. This made for a fun engaging read that was hard to put down. I love books like this, ones that suck you in and don’t let you go.
What made it all the more complex and layer were the well rounded and solid characters. Our MC was strong, determined and played close to heart. I will say that I loved her off the bat, but as I moved more into the first chapter she do a bit of a character change that I don’t know was intentional, or just happened by accident when the author was explaining her past and flaws. This also switch the tone, but it was quickly brought back once that narrative was given. Outside of that, Aria was an wicket kick-butt character.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s unique take on what would happened if supernaturals/monsters were real and pretty much took over, turning the world as you know it upside down. It had a bit of that lawless wild west feel, which gave the story that something special, separating it from others with a similar premises. I highly recommend you get yours hands on this otherworldly book. It will dig its hooks into you and will not, no matter how hard you struggle, let you go.
Happy Reading

Cursed by Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel by Danielle Annett
Four Stars
Cursed by Fire : An Urban Fantasy is the first book in the Blood and Magic Series by Danielle Annett. This is the first book I have read from this author and I truly enjoyed it so much I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. This book was filled with action from beginning to end. I read the whole book in one sitting. This book had shifters, vampires and other mythical creatures. It features Aria, a young woman who works as a mercenary searching for the killer of a young boy. The world building is very well done and the action pack chase to find the killers will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you like paranormal with a bunch of action, this is the book for you.i look forward to what is coming next in this series.
Cursed by Fire by Danielle Annett
5 Stars!!!!!
I was in paranormal heaven with this book. Shifters,Witches,Vampires and those with psychic abilities what more can a girl ask for. Drama that’s it! This book had it all. I was so very hooked from page one.
The chemistry between Ari and James is very entertaining. They are a well matched pair really. I don’t know what lays in the future for them in this series but I know it will be interesting. I found this first book to be very refreshing and a great new find. The storyline is very interesting and had me eager to find out what was gonna happen next. I was also very encased by the way that this first book ended. I am a big fan of cliffhangers and this definitely had me hooked. I look forward to reading more from this author in the near future.
Cursed By Fire written by Danielle Annett is book 1 in the Blood and Magic Series. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book before reading it. I try not to make judgements but let’s face it sometimes we fail. I enjoyed this story from the beginning. Aria is a intriguing character, she has unique qualities, and she’s a bit stubborn. She’s the main character and main focus of the story and you know there’s something special about her. The story was over pretty quickly for me and it does end with you wanting more so it’s a good thing there are a few books in the series out already.
The other characters in the story so far make you wonder what’s going on you sense more going on with Aria and James but their actions show only a strong friendship. The attraction between Inarus and Aria is hot and cold but it’s strained. Aria is a special person and with a war brewing all sides need her but what side will she choose…

Rated 5 stars
This story has some humor and a love triangle. The writing is fast paced and I finished this fairly quickly. It engaged me and I wanted to see what was happening next to Aria and her cohorts. I was mostly through the book and I was wondering..how did I get to the end already? I love a good shifter/vampire book. This one has both with the added interest of Aria who has pyrotechnic abilities. So hang on for the ride.
James…James….James..I am unsure what to say about you. I love your protective side. How you can be ferocious one minute and snuggly or brooding the next. Shifters are my favorite. But wolf shifters? They are the top of the heap in my opinion. So James has an unfair advantage on all others, in my book. I think he has feeling for Aria but it’s very hard to know for sure. His little shows of jealousy are so cute!
Inarus is Arias new neighbor and a sweet looking guy that seems to like Her. He has an uncanny ability of showing up when she needs him. Stalker much? But there is just something about him that I am unsure of. He does have an one advantage on earning Arias trust. Will he use it is the question?
Aria is a strong girl! She is a little sassy and doesn’t take crap from anyone. She easily stands up to vamps and shifters. She is a mercenary. She can wield a blade or use her fists. She also has her fire making abilities if she needs them. I love her take on coffee in reference to the Gilmore Girls!!
This is a first time author for me and it won’t be the last. I can not wait to dig into the next book in the series! I wonder what will happen to these characters.

The story Cursed by Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Blood and Magic Book 1) by Danielle Annett is a wonderful book that I enjoyed reading. It was one that grabbed my attention from the very beginning and I didn’t want to put down until I had read the final page. It is a story that has plenty of action, mystery and danger. I love stories that include shifters and other mythical creatures. The story begins with Aria angry, upset and wanting justice for a young shifter that she had been searching for and found too late. While at first she is told to leave it alone, she then finds herself hired to find the killers. This begins a journey that has her investigating why the shifter was killed and who could be responsible. Along the way there are secrets uncovered and she finds herself in danger. Will Aria survive, find the killers and bring them to justice? Read this book to find out. I loved the character of Aria. She is a woman that is smart, independent, and determined to find out the truth. The list of who she trusts and cares about is a short one. I enjoyed reading about these characters and how they and Aria interact. There are also characters who I wondered if their agenda was to help or to hurt Aria. This is a fast-paced story that had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. This is the first book that I have read by the author and the first book in a series. I can’t wait to read the next story.
Cursed by Fire (Blood & Magic #1) by Danielle Annett
5 out of 5 stars
Cursed by Fire is book one in the Blood & Magic series written by Ms. Annett but it’s also the first book that I have read by this author. This was an amazing book with great characters that where well written and the storyline was really great and believable with a few surprises. This authors writing is easy to follow and is unique she has a new fan with me.
Aria Naveed is human, and has special abilities that she uses to help her investigate crimes a mercenary if you will. She was hired to find a seven year old boy and after two weeks of searching she finds his body broken and discarded. Dead. Turns out the kid was half shifter. And shifters don’t abandon their own.
Blood is going to spill
Her boss doesn’t want her to hunt down his killers. It’s too dangerous. But the Pacific Northwest Pack steps in, hiring me to bring the bastards to justice.
Her search takes her through the maze of shifter hierarchy and the depths of the paranormal underworld, these killers underestimate how determined she is to mete out their punishment. Vigilante justice is the only kind these people understand.
Yes, blood will spill. And she is determined it will be theirs…
Will Aria find the persons responsible for the boy’s death? Can she trust those around her since she is not a part of the paranormal community? What will happen if people found out about her abilities and what she can do? Is she safe?
You will have to read this story to find out I highly recommend this book…

I enjoyed Cursed by Fire. It’s fast paced and entertaining. The storyline was good with some wonderful twists in it. I liked the characters well enough too. Aria’s sweet with a bit of sass and good heart but she lacks self control. I think I was hoping her character would be a bit stronger but it is only the first book and there’s lots of room for growth.
I’m curious to see how the story progresses and the characters develop and grow in the book.
Danielle Annett’s Cursed by Fire is the first book of the Blood & Magic series. This urban fantasy novel is created with creative characters with unique abilities. I previously read another book later in this series, so I do recommend to read them in order so that you follow the events in the story as the author created them and learn as the characters and events occur. Aria’s character has numerous struggles and she tries to be solely independent. When things are out of her control, she struggles the most. Her character does grow throughout this story and I love her interaction with other characters and paranormals. The story is elaborate, full of depth and a worth first book to read and a series to follow.
“Cursed By Fire: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Blood & Magic BK 1) is written by Danielle Annette. I have read many stories of the paranormal world and I found this story to be a good beginning or a basis for future stories with similar characters or perhaps to enhance the authors style of writing. It could used some originality. The story involves supernatural beings moving to the top of the list of who is more powerful the humans or the supernatural?! Woooooo!!!!! According to this story it’s not the humans or is it?!
Aria seems to have powers or gifts to try and help others or to figure things out. As the story moves forward it seems that danger is in the air and following Aria. There seem to be good characters and story itself seems to make sense. The author mixed in some romance to keep the story going. Liked the cover a lot. The story starts off strong and then fizzles along the way. I giving this story 4 stars.
