This is the first time in reading this author and what drew me to this one is the title. I proceeded to then look into it further with realizing it had a combination of things I like to read in a book. The time it is set in is good to escape to sometimes. Then it also has paranormal woven into it thanks to the curse. Add drama running from death you have something that once you begin you can not easily put it down. Alexander and Victoria are the center of this with it reeling you into their dilemmas. Intrigue is also a part with the emotions slowly elevating. This is one read not to missed if Gothic romance is a favorite.
This is a new Author to me a well written story and once I started reading I was not putting the book down until I finished reading it. Alexander Winslow and heiress, Victoria Northcote’s story of a ancient family curse that effects him. I enjoyed reading this story and seeing how these two come together.
This is very intense & emotional. I think both characters have some darkness, she brings light to his and he brings light to hers. She makes an excellent choice when seeking assistance from this hermit. Alex does a great job as her protector, a woman scorned has cursed his family throughout generations and he’s accepted his fate. Begin the inquisitive and smart woman she is, Victoria is just as determined to live, deter her greedy relative and break this curse. Along the answer eludes them, it turns out to be very simple, sort of. 🙂 Thoroughly enjoyed reading this.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes and I am leaving a fair and honest review.
What a delightful book! It reminds me of the summers I devoured Victoria Holt’s romantic suspense novels! In fact, it seems, Ms. Holt appears twice in this book, or at least her namesake does!
Vicki (Victoria!) is a plucky 1895 girl, who learned at her father’s knee after her mother died. She learned how to manage a home and how to keep books. And how to hold her own and help raise her baby brother, Davey. As her father lay dying, he introduces her to her Uncle Charlie, the family scamp and fresh from the wilds of San Francisco, who will care for her and Davey, manage her fortunes and protect them all after her father’s passing. Things, of course, do not go as planned. Uncle Charlie is more con-man than scamp and is out for her fortune, even at that cost of her life. She flees to the home of her father’s dearest friend. Unfortunately, (as these things go!) that friend is also dead. His handsome, angsty and borderline Byronic, son, Alex. Who, grudginginly takes her in. He is hiding a dark, dark family secret and the fabulous housekeeper Mrs. Holt (get it??)
A fairly clean romance, there are a few barely sexy scenes that pass quickly. The plot is by the numbers and the resolution is a tad strained. The language is delightfully dated, except, surprisingly for the flashback scenes that reveal the origin of the secret.
All in all, this is either a fun flashback to your first romance novels as a young girl or a first romance novel you can share with that special girl in your life
4 stars out of 5

Vicky realized she had to take action to escape her scheming Uncle and keep her brother Davy safe from harm. She flees to a family friend seeking refuge. Little does she know of the secrets of the handsome Alex Winslow, master of the manor. As Vicky eludes her uncle’s evil desires she searches for the secrets of Alex’s mysterious family and the family curse. This book has everything you want in a good mystery. It is set in a historical era, you will find suspense, danger, mystery, and a romance. It is a good read and once you start you will not want to stop until you have finished the book. I highly recommend it.
