Perpetually foiled romance heroine Island Chaptal and reformed cleaning expert March —or is it Mr. November?— are enjoying a pleasant break in South-Africa, after brushing death in the inhospitable and platypus-infested mountains of Liechtenstein…That is, until a commercial flight disintegrates over the Atlantic, killing hundreds, and Island’s supervillain dad makes the news as the mastermind … as the mastermind behind the attack. Old Lion Dries is now on the run, and he calls upon his last ally —and favorite disciple— March.
From the streets of Venice to the turquoise waters of French Polynesia, March and Island embark on a deadly race against the clock to find out what secrets lie behind Dries’s downfall, and stop the mysterious “Crystal Whisperer” before it’s too late. This time, though, there might just be no winning against futuristic weapons, CIA agents, Roomba cats, (reluctantly) evil henchmen, and dads who won’t let you get your groove on, dammit!

(Cannot be read as a standalone)
Island and March can’t catch a break. Her wish of finally losing her virginity is extinguished by a new deadly threat. Someone wants to capture Island and eliminate March. Island’s biological father is also a target.
The story is action packed and there is never a dull moment. This book isn’t as random as the previous books, but it is just as funny, quirky, and cheesy.
My favorite part of this book is reading about March and Dries’s history. It’s really complicated, and I just know more will be explained in the next book. Island and March are also a little different as they try to make their dangerous relationship work. Like every couple, they have some trust issues to work on. Unlike every couple, they have to survive to live another day.
If this series is new to you, I highly recommend starting from book 1 to get a better sense of all the characters. If you love cheesy scenarios, cats riding on Roombas, and silky chest hair, you need to pick this up!
Cliffhanger! This series, in some respect, is like one big long story. However, at the same time each book has it’s own adventures, mysteries, suspenseful arcs, and resolutions. Except… this one, not so much. Well, it does have tons of enjoyable action scenes and adventures – but there is nothing satisfying about the ending. At almost 12 hours, Camilla Monk is not chopping a single book into tiny bits NOR needlessly (or painfully) dragging out the plot. This is a complete adventure and a truly enjoyable listen. Explosions, car chases, espionage, and sharks (or maybe not…) all make for a wild ride with our adorable heroine, Island and her dashing beau, March.
We are left unsure of both Island and March’s well-being at the end and I’ll be diving right in to Butterfly in Amber.
Narration:
Amy McFadden provides a full cast of characters from a variety of countries with discernible and consistent voices. This one had a few spots (the elevator scene) where her emotions brought tears to my eyes. Additionally, McFadden also gives each “outtake” from faux romance novels that serve as the intro to every chapter their own unique delivery.
4.5
Island & March with Dries
Oh my gosh what an ending !!! This one is my favorite out of the three I’ve read in the series.. Heart-stopping action scenes, funny banters and a very enthralling March. It was very difficult to put my Kindle down. Each page were cleverly crafted to hook you to keep reading.
Let’s not forget those heartbreaking scenes Karl, Dries, March then Stiles . I am also starting to hate The Queen!!
Great addition to the series. Can’t wait to start the next one.
OMG OMG why why why did I have to read this book when I knew (!) it would end in this freakin’ cliffhanger!
Now I will obsess until May 12…
Island and March are staying in South Africa when a passenger plane gets blown to pieces and all fingers point to Dries. Soon after, they are again on the run and trying to find information. An elaborate scheme is discovered involving the Lions and the Board with the CIA all over it. Rollercoaster material with high speed chases on land or water, relationship struggles and dangerous ex boyfriends. Ending in the massive cliffhanger that threatens my sanity right now.
What a great series! I can’t wait for the 4th and final book, although I will hate to say goodbye to my fave couple of the moment. I say only one word: elevator…. sigh
(Still freaking out. 3 months…) – 2017
The third book in the Spotless series, and also the third I have read (in quick succession 😉 ).
Note: This book does not work as a standalone novel, you’ll need a lot of backstory.
What can I say besides just “WOW”?
Crystal Whisperer takes you on one hell of a ride – both in the best and worst possible ways. As always, the characters are superb and it’s a million of little details that make them truly come to life.
Also as always, there is plenty of action, geekiness and romance, and many of the characters are already familiar from Spotless and Beating Ruby.
What I liked in particular (besides the obvious), but in no particular order:
– Island’s ringtone 😀
– the yaycupid-chart
– the yogurt tub (which reminded me of a family vacation in Rome, about 100 years ago)
– the intervention letters <3
- Karl
- the return of Rica and Ramirez (I *was* starting to miss them)
- ALL the pop culture references (way too many to count, and I'm sure I still missed a whole boatload)
- Mozart's Magic Flute (one of my favourites!)
- Stiles! (not only the Roomba-cattery though that was awesome on its own)
What I didn't like:
The ending. Seriously.
What a whopper of a cliffhanger! You may want to hold off on reading Crystal Whisperer until Butterfly in Amber is available.
I love the Spotless series & this book is a perfect addition to a perfect series. I devoured the book and have read it twice since. Love.
