#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs presents the first Alpha and Omega novel—the start of an extraordinary series set in Mercy Thompson’s world, but with rules of its own…Anna never knew werewolves existed until the night she survived a violent attack…and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she’d learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust … down and never, ever trust dominant males. But Anna is that rarest kind of werewolf: an Omega. And one of the most powerful werewolves in the country is about to recognize her value as a pack member—and as his mate.

I stumbled onto this series and have loved it. I do recommended you read the short story (or whatever) Alpha and Omega before Cry wolf otherwise you won’t understand why characters do as they do. I’ve read this one three times and still enjoy it.
Probably my favorite urban fantasy couple of all time. This is an excellent action mystery series. I wouldn’t call it romance because they are an established couple already so the series deals with things outside of their relationship, much like Amelia and Mr. Emerson in Elizabeth Peters’ cozy mystery series.
Love this author SO much! A book worth reading and rereading again.
First up, you need to read Alpha & Omega before reading Cry Wolf or you are going to be all kinds of confused. It has the story of how Charles and Anna met and what happened to get Charles in the sorry shape he was in at the very beginning of Cry Wolf. Trust me, this will not be a chore. It’s a great book chock full of info you’ll need, plus its action-packed.
I had a hard time feeling Charles out in Alpha & Omega but in Cry Wolf you really get to know him. He’s hurt in a huge way, his mate has been horribly abused and, to make matters worse, there is a rogue werewolf attacking people in the mountains and it’s his job to track him down. I loved Charles here. Even with so much going on, Anna was always his first priority. Clueless as to how to help her, he even resorted to asking advice from someone who he could barely stand but who was uniquely qualified to help. For me, this is alpha behavior at its best.
Anna was like a fish out of water when first introduced to Charles’ pack. Never given the information she needed after being forcibly turned, everything was a learning experience especially when it came to becoming mated. Anna’s gift as an Omega wolf was sorely needed in the Marrok’s (Charles’ father) pack. An Omega has a calming effect on wolves and can help them heal. For Anna, it was like being thrown into the deep end from the get-go. She thought being sent out in the wilderness with Charles to track down a rogue werewolf was more like a getting to know you type of adventure. Too bad it was way more than a rogue werewolf that they found. This was a fight against pure evil and one that would take everything they had and then some to win.
Charles and Anna truly coming together as mates as they fought against evil may have been at the forefront of this book, but the side characters had me just as enthralled. Bran commands my attention any time he shows on the page, Asil tugged at my heartstrings with his story and the trials he had to go through here. It’s apparent Samuel has a story ahead of him, and then there is Walter…I admired him so much, and my heart broke for him in the end.
Cry Wolf was an emotional read with suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat. I loved the depth given to the characters and can’t wait to see what else is in store for Anna and Charles.
Rating: 4.5 Stars
As mentioned elsewhere, Patricia Briggs is one of the authors I deem worth spending a piece of my life reading. This book does nothing to change that opinion. My only complaint is that she can’t write books as fast as I can read them!
I prefer the Mercy Thompson series to the Alpha series. Had a hard time reading it and didn’t get into it.
~ 4.5 Cry Wolf Stars ~
Cry Wolf is book one of the Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs. I recommend reading the novella Alpha & Omega before reading Cry Wolf , so you get a feel for the context and Anna & Charles’s, relationship in this story.
I am a big fan of the Mercy Thompson Series by Ms. Briggs. I love her characters and the world she has created. Both Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series over lap each other in their timelines. You meet some of the characters in MT and others in A&O. You don’t have to have read both series to enjoy them. It’s just nice as a fan to get that connection and timeline over lap.
Cry Wolf is a re-read for me.
We have an interesting plot that takes our characters deep into the Montana woods in order to solve the case of a rouge werewolf, but they find much more then just a rouge and things get intense. Life is never easy especially as a werewolf and when you add other supernatural creatures into the mix it gets chaotic. I love how the author describes her wolves. It’s not what we have come to expect.
Anna, was turned not by her choose into a werewolf. She has been used and abused by her pack in Chicago until Charles comes along to ad her. Seeing her character develop and learning what makes her tick was delightful. She is a rarity among werewolves and learning about this and the Omega traits are fascinating. Charles has never had a real love in his life, so he is new to the mating idea. He is also an interesting & unique character, in that he is different from his kind with an ability to spawn clothing and his Brother Wolf. As for Anna and Charles’s relationship. The wolves are attracted to one another, but the human side takes it much slower. I liked how these two are taking it slowly and I look forward to seeing how the relationship develops throughout the series.
Cry Wolf was a fabulous start to the Alpha & Omega series. I am looking forward to re-reading this and all the other books by Patricia Briggs. If you have not picked up her work. I highly recommend you do.
