A second chance stand alone office romance from USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde…Five years ago, Sam and I fell in love just as hard as we fell apart. The last thing I expect is for him to walk into my office as the new legal counsel. Now, I have to see him every single day. We vow to remain professional, but it’s a small office. The sly glances and his blistering charm are unavoidable. It … his blistering charm are unavoidable.
It all feels so familiar. Too comfortable. After what happened the last time…I should know better. If I’m not careful, he’ll break my heart all over again.
But being with Sam is everything I’ve ever wanted.
Maybe it’s worth giving my heart to him a second time.

The Lying Season by K.A. Linde is another angsty, steamy, tempestuous 2nd chance romance.
Sam and Lark have a past and haven’t seen each other in 5 years- now they are back in each others lives as Lark’s the deputy campaign manager trying to get Mayor Kensington reelected and Sam just got hired on as an attorney for the campaign to work in the legal department. Oh my!! The chemistry is still sizzling between them. Lark’s just got out of a relationship while Sam is in a relationship but it’s on its last legs. They look at one another…they look, they can’t touch. They want but can’t have. Something happened to them 5 years before that decimated their 1st relationship and the waves are still at times felt. This story is so angsty… it’s more of a push/pull they got going on. Will they or won’t they? Will the answer ever come of what happened 5 years before? Will Lark and Sam finally get their HEA?
An emotional rollercoaster romance ride!
My Rating: 4.5 stars *******
Give it up for Kyla! She deserves a big round of applause and all of the praise for this new second chance office romance!! The Lying Season was absolutely amazing! Everything I adore in a K.A. Linde book and then some!
This is the story of Lark. Lark St. Vincent and the one who she had to walk away from, Sam Rutherford. I was super stoked to get Larks story! She was one character I wanted to see more of in the Cruel series so I’m overly excited about this book. I loved getting another taste of the Upper East Side and another book with politics. Who knew I’d actually enjoy reading about politics? Not me, but Linde makes it fun. Makes it exciting and keeps you interested from page one until the very end!
When you meet Lark in the Cruel series, she was a workaholic. Well folks, that hasn’t changed one bit! She’s the same strong willed, successful boss of a woman she was before….though a wrench may throw a kink in her plans. it may throw her off her game, leaving her unable to focus on her work. That kink? The ex, Sam Rutherford.
When Sam’s hired on as the new legal council for the same campaign she’s working for, will they be able to co-exist? Work side by side in a small office? Keep things professional?
This is one story you do not want to miss! You’ll have to read to find out all of the answers! K.A. Linde created a magnificent work of art with this story!! Her attention to detail with her characters and the environments never ceases to amaze me! I for one cannot wait for the second stand alone book in this series!!
Larkin St. Vincent is a strong, independent woman. She worked her way up through the ranks at the office the mayor of New York City and showed her family that she doesn’t need or want to become the heir to their businesses or their large fortunes. She has a passion for politics and working with someone who makes a difference.
She doesn’t have very many weaknesses, except for Sam. Falling for him made her feel complete but they fell apart in a very fiery and heartbreaking way. She’s never been the same since. But that was in North Carolina and that was five years ago.
Suddenly he’s in New York City and working in her campaign office. The chemistry is still there between them. Except there is something standing in their way. They try to become friends but they were always destined to be more.
The journey that Lark and Sam take in this book was a roller-coaster. Their snark and bite and chemistry was so good. It had me rooting for them from the start. I love the way that Linde shows how things between them crackle in the best way. Their coming together and falling aparts left me turning page after page.
I also loved all the supporting character and can’t wait to read the rest of this series. Another great book with even more book hangover.
I love that this book had just enough angst without driving me crazy. I fell in love with Sam and Lark. I can’t wait for more!
The Lying Season is the first book by K.A. Linde that I have read and I am now a huge fan!
She put together the perfect combination of fantastic, well developed characters and a unique second chance romance storyline!
Sam and Lark have a very complicated past that they both thought they left behind but now they are working together again and so many of those old feelings have had a chance to resurface.
They both have changed but can they put their heartbreaking past behind them, overcome all the obstacles they face now and finally embrace their second chance at a heartwarming future together?
Second chance romances are kinda my jam and this one definitely delivers.
Lark St Vincent is working as the deputy campaign manager for the New York City mayor’s election campaign. Readers of Linde’s Cruel series will remember Lark from that series as a friend of Penn, Katherine and Lewis.
Lark is the glue that holds that crew together and she’s worked hard to distance herself from her family and make a name and life of her own. Years ago, she served on a campaign and fell in love with another aide, Sam Rutherford. They didn’t last and Lark went back home.
She’s thrown herself into her work and her friends, but finds herself face to face with Sam, when he’s hired as a lawyer for the campaign.
Cue the angst, the romance and the drama. The Crew of friends from the Cruel series make up the supporting cast and I particularly liked getting to know a bit more of Court and cannot wait for his book.
If you loved the Record series (which is on my top of all time list), you will definitely enjoy this book. This can be read as a stand alone, but after reading this, you’ll definitely want to read more !
Wow! When I think I have read the best one of these companion novels, K.A. Linde does it again! She tops all the others just like that.
I couldn’t put the book down! You won’t either once you fall in love with Sam & Lark. Second chance romance with a dash of hesitation, risk and pulling on your heart strings. As you are learning about the two main characters you also start to get some insight on some other favorite couples.
Best part is this could be read as a stand-alone but if you want to …read the Cruel Trilogy prior to. Love how the story continues!
I have been waiting for the release of The Lying Season and I have to admit – I loved every minute of Lark and Sam.
We originally met Lark in the Cruel Trilogy and I was so excited to see more of her. Lark is Upper East Side, but she wants to make a way for herself and not off of her parents or their money. So, since she fell in love with politics years ago, that is the work that she chooses to do. She met Sam on the campaign trail years ago and fell in love with him, but she got her heart broke in the end.
When Sam comes back into her life, 5 years later, will they be able to move past all of the hurt from the past? Will he be able to accept her for who she is and give her the HEA that she deserves?
This book was wonderful. Great pace, kept you hooked and flipping the pages from beginning to the end and never left you feeling lost. This book is a standalone, but to understand all of the other characters, you will need to read the Cruel Trilogy. I can’t wait until we get more books with the other characters, especially Court!
This is book is so so good! I was in love with and rooting for Lark from the first moment I met her. The chemistry between her and Sam jumps off the page. One of the things I love best about KA Linde’s books is her world-building. The characters come to life and it feels like you could just walk into the story. There are so many hints for the stories to come and I can’t wait for the next one!!
Oh my goodness this book was so good! I was completely engrossed with the storyline. It was great to see the characters from Linde’s other series. Yes, there was drama. But Linde’s drama left me begging for more!
It’s been almost a year and half since I’ve been able to finish a book. You talk about an epic book slump, well I was there!! Not a fun thing to have for a book worm! I decided I just needed to take some time off and see if I could come back and get my mojo back. Well I’m back and The Lying Season is the first book I’ve read start to finish! I’ve picked up some other books but none of them held my attention. KA Linde is one of my all time favorite authors so I thought, lets see if this is the one that brings me back! I am very happy to report that it brought me back to my happy place! I love a good second chance romance and The Lying Season gave me exactly what I needed! This is definitely one you need to one click.
I loved Lark! She is wasn’t going to let her family name dictate her future. She wanted to show there is more to her than the name she was born with. She works hard to be more than a name, going as far as shorting her name so people do not know who her family is. She wants to follow her own path and do it her way without her family influence.
And there’s Sam. While Lark was born with a trust fund, Sam has had to work for everything he has. He worked doing construction and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. He worked his way to become a lawyer that he is today. But accepting a job for the mayor’s office in New York would be a decision that would put him face to face with someone he never expected to see again, Lark.
Lark and Sam had dated in college and seem to have their whole lives ahead of them, until it wasn’t. They went their separate ways and neither thought they would see each other again. With five years between them now is there a chance for them to put the past behind them or will things from the past come back to the forefront and derail and chance of may have? You will need to read The Lying Season to find out!!
Wow, The Lying Season was quite a ride. I don’t even know how to begin.
Larkin is an amazing character, she’s passionate about helping people she respects get elected and she’s a deputy campaign manager trying to get Mayor Kensington reelected. She works like crazy even though her family is very wealthy and she could have chosen a different life, an easier life that her controlling family wanted her to be living but that couldn’t be further from what she wants. She treats her friends like family and she’s been burned before when it comes to love. Including by Sam. They had a relationship 5 years ago that didn’t end well. So, Lark is blindsided when she learns that Sam is now an attorney and he has been hired to work in the legal department. Sam is blindsided too since he always thought Lark would be working for her parents in their multibilion-dollar company. Now, they have to see each other every day…
I loved Lark’s gang! They are the funniest, most dysfunctional gang EVER but their friendship certainly shines through, I laughed a lot in the moments they were together and there were a LOT of intense moments. I really liked Lark and Sam together, there’s a lot of chemistry there but also a lot of misunderstandings and not so perfect moments that weighted between them. There were a moment or two when I was actually thinking they weren’t very good to each other in the past which made me doubt a little about that second chance, but K. A. Linde didn’t need much time to change my mind. I definitely enjoyed their story however I do feel there were a lot of “upper east side type of people” mentions in a depreciative way, I kind of get where Lark was coming from but it still felt a bit much at times. Still, I’m addicted to this Upper East Side world and I really, really NEED to read English and Court’s story (so, so, so intense together!) and I can’t wait to get my hands on Katherine and Camden’s story too!
KA Linde’s books are always smart and real; this one was no exception! Everything I loved about the Cruel Series was continued in the Lying Season. The characters, the Upper East Side drama, and never knowing what could happen next. Lark and Sam’s story was amazing and you should absolutely check it out!
Sam and Lark met years ago and fell hard but went their separate ways. Now they are face-to-face again and are determined to be professional. But what happened all those years ago and are their feelings for each other truly done and over with? I loved watching Lark and Sam fight their feelings while navigating working together. The chemistry between the was intense and undeniable, but could they find a way back to each other? Lark was very determined and set to do things her way. Sam was sexy and charming. The Lying Season by K.A. Linde is a second chance romance that was full of angst and steamy chemistry.
Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog.
Happy reading!
An angsty second chance romance!
Lark St. Vincent is from the Upper East Side, privileged, and has a dark side to her. However, she doesn’t want that life, she wants to work hard, make something of herself in the political field. As the deputy campaign manager for the mayor, she is busy and doesn’t take time to meet any guys. Along comes Sam, the “one” who just happened to get away, and is now working on the same campaign as Lark. These two have chemistry that jumps off the page. I adored the push and pull, the banter between them. The story makes me want to join a political campaign, while it may not be glamorous, I might just find my own Sam!
The Lying Season is an amazing standalone read that makes me excited for who comes next on the Upper East Side!
I was so glad to hear that this spinoff series of CRUEL was going to happen. I had a feeling from the glimpses we got of Lark in that series that she was going to have a very interesting story. Lark is shocked to see her ex, Sam has been given a position on the campaign she is working on. I love a good second chance romance and Ms. Linde did. Not. disappoint. Hoping me get to see more of the crew.
This book, I am struggling with the words to reflect how I feel about The Lying Season. What Kyla has done with this Upper East Side world is simply profound, exciting and captivating! In The Lying Season we get Lark’s story. Lark was first seen in the Cruel series by K.A. Linde in 2019, and now gets her own spin off that. This book is a standalone but having read the Cruel series and the Record series, it elevated my reading experience beyond what I ever expected!
Lark is working on the mayor’s reelection campaign in NYC and when her ex from five years ago walks back into her life, as legal counsel to the mayor, a flood of emotion and everything she ever felt about Sam comes back instantly. They plan to remain strictly professional, but when you only get one once in a lifetime love, and they slip away, can you truly vow to stay away? Their spark is more than just a spark that could ignite a fire. It is a spark that could engulf and destroy them all if they aren’t careful!
“You can’t escape who you are, but you shouldn’t ignore who you want to become either.”
“…I decided that I couldn’t be the person I was if I wanted to be the person I was meant to become.”
We get to go back to the Upper East Side with Lark’s standalone and I can’t wait for the rest of the standalones to hit my kindle later this year. I need all their stories! These characters have all continued to grow in different ways from first meeting them and seeing what Kyla has planned for the remaining members of The Crew, I am beyond thrilled for each release planned this year! Going back brings up memories of Penn and Natalie’s story, as well as the other crew members we love to hate! Court, Katherine and Gavin all get books, bring on the next season!
Lark is a campaign manager for the mayor. Sam is her ex-boyfriend from years ago. Now he’s the lawyer involved in the campaign with her. Their relationship didn’t work in the past, will the present be the same or could they get a second chance? A good read.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving a review.
So this book has everything I love in a book..Second chance, angst, a strong female character who goes after what she wants and stands up for herself even when it’s her family and a passion for life/career. This book has also has a group of friends that despite them being from the upper East side and trust funds, they have a love for each other and a desire to do more with their lives. They care about the world and contribute when its needed. Yes some parts of their lives are messed up..case in point Camden and Katherine…
Back to Sam and Larkin.. These two met when their lives were just getting started. Larkin was wanting to make a name for herself and not wanting anyone to know she came from money. She knew that she wanted to work on a campaign trail. She wanted to support someone who would make a difference. Her and Sam had an instant connection but then things came up to break them up. Her world is shaken when he is thrown into her world again. She has had bad relationships in the past and been burned. She has never forgotten about him though. What I love about Larkin is that despite her family having money, she still goes out and puts lots of time into her job, I mean you might even call her a workaholic. She is strong and determined in getting what she wants but does it in a way that you still like her lol. She is very close and supportive of her friends. Her friends are very supportive of her and look out for her best interest including with Sam. I wouldn’t exactly call it a slow burn but it kinda is. I mean Sam is a great character. He comes from a much different world then Lark and her friends. His parents are simple, blue blood and hard working parents. They shower the kids with love and show them that hard wins in the end. It isn’t about the money where he comes from. Despite this he still fits in with Lark and her friends. They see the good and wants that in their lives as well. I gotta say this is one of the best books I’ve read this year and I’m dying to read Anna and Court’s story next! I feel like there’s more to Court then just being a spoiled rich kid with a trust fund and that Anna is gonna fall hard for him and his charm. She’ll also put him in his place when its needed cause believe me it will be needed! I would highly recommend this book and make sure you have a afternoon free cause it will hold your attention from beginning to end!! Fantastic book!!!
5 Going After What She Wants Stars!!!
I absolutely LOVED this book so much!! Lark is a woman we met in the Cruel Trilogy and while this book can absolutely be read as a standalone, I really think to have a full understanding of Lark and Sam’s world those books should be read prior to this one.
Lark is a woman that comes from extreme wealth and the Upper East Side of New York and hangs with a crowd that comes from the same type of families. And even though she has money at her fingertips she’s determined to be her own woman and doing what she wants to do and not letting her family dictate what her future looks like….and that future includes Sam…or at least it did at one point….however things didn’t go the way she wanted and she’s with a man that just is so wrong for her… and when Sam comes back into her life well let’s just say it wasn’t smooth sailing for them!
I loved the pace of this book…they’re working on getting Leslie elected as the Mayor of NYC and as I’m sure you can imagine it’s a fast paced, stressful project and lots of hours together means they get to know each other as they are today! So much has changed especially for Lark.
In addition to getting an inside view of what running a campaign looks like we also got to see some of the Upper East Side Crew, especially Katherine, through Lark’s eyes and it really changed how I felt about some of them and I’m anxious to see if we’re going to get Katherine’s book someday…but I digress.
This book is everything I wanted for Lark’s story. We see a woman that is strong, intelligent and doesn’t back down from a challenge getting her HEA in many areas of her life all while running a political campaign in one of the best cities in the world! Ms. Linde has outdone herself with this story making me fall in love with her characters, their nuances and had me fervently cheering them to get the love back they lost in the past!
One of my favorite series is the Record series by Ms. Linde. I was thrilled to see Ms. Linde return to politics with The Lying Season. This book gave me all of the feels. I fell hopelessly in love with Sam as I watched him and Lark find their way back to each to each other. I loved that Lark was finding herself and was the best version of herself when she was with Sam. They brought out the best in each other and all of the feelings that should be felt when in love.
This tight knight group of friends was awesome. I loved getting to know the whole crew. I’m guessing they will each get their chance to fall in love and I’m excited for each of their stories.
Ms. Linde knows how to bring it. This book has all of the feels and is a well told story with a group of characters you love. Absolutely loved it!
