The Breaking Season by K.A. Linde is the third full-length book in her Seasons series. This is the story of Katherine and Camden and their arranged marriage and all the layers of their personalities, background, relationship and more. My first venture into books by this author was with this series so I was unfamiliar with the fact that some of these characters are introduced in previous series and are shown under a different light. That being said, I was desperate for this story from everything I read in the previous Seasons stories.
The arranged marriage has already happened and these two have already had their falling out. They are both so stubborn that neither will give an inch nor will they let the other one know what they expect from them. It is a tragic recipe for disaster that just keeps repeating until itself until they finally call a truce on vacation with their friends. But even then, their past gets in the way of everything they were feeling.
As Camden and Katherine work through their own issues separately and eventually together they have a lot of suppressed emotion and trauma to deal with. Allowing the other to be there for them is the key component in making things better but it’s a hard journey for them. Loved it! Enjoy!
Katherine and Camden are EVERYTHING! I have waited so long for this story. From the beginning, I felt like Katherine’s story needed to be told. This book does not disappoint. It was worth the wait and completely worth the read. I’m head over heels in love with Camden and Katherine. So thankful that Linde went ahead and wrote this. It’s brilliant!!!
This book was everything that I wanted and so much more! Katherine and Camden are two people who could not be more stubborn. They butt heads more than anyone I’ve ever seen and yet somehow they work. What first started out as an arrangement somehow turned into so much more. I honestly didn’t think that I was going to love this book as much as I did! I didn’t want to put it down. I’ve loved every single book in the series, but this one, this one takes the cake. If I had to tell you to read one book, while you need to read every book in the series, this one is the one that I would recommend this one. Katherine hasn’t been my favorite character in the series. She starts trouble. She causes drama. She is the upper East side queen. And yet this book brought out a soft side which I didn’t know she had. And then we see a side to Camden that I didn’t expect. He’s on his own journey that shows he’s a real person with real feelings. I can’t say enough good things about The Breaking Season. The Dark Prince and Villain Katherine are the perfect couple!
If you would have told me that I would want to read about Katherine Van Pelt after meeting her in ‘Cruel Money’, I would have said no way. And if you would have told me she would become my favorite heroine of Linde’s, I would have laughed in your face… but here we are. This. Book. Was. Epic. Linde’s best work yet and Katherine is by far my favorite heroine she’s ever written. Trust me, no one is more surprised about this than me!
Katherine and Camden are married, but it’s a contract. It’s not a real marriage… or is it? Things between these two are complicated and tumultuous at times, but you can tell they feel for each other, even if they won’t admit it. And when they let themselves be together, the chemistry is sizzling. But the question is, will these two have a contractual marriage only or will they try to make it work for real. Is that even possible?
Through the last few books, Linde has made us care a little more about Katherine and Camden as we were shown a different side of them though the eyes of their best friends. How she managed to make these seemingly unredeemable villains not only characters I cared about, but characters I loved above all the others is beyond me. That is talent right there.
I ended up loving Camden Percy so dang much. He had a much bigger heart than I thought possible and was a loyal friend and managed to make a good husband. But Katherine, Katherine shocked me like no other. She’s a tough nut to crack, but once you see her for who she really is, you can’t help but to love her. She seems cold and hateful on the outside, but that is just a protective layer she wears. It’s not who she really is. I’m not saying she’s perfect, but I loved her so much and after seeing all she’d been through in her life I have a respect for her I didn’t before.
This was one of my most anticipated books of 2020 and it totally lived up to the hype. The Breaking Season was addicting and had that obsessive quality to it, I honestly could not put it down. K.A. Linde’s writing is impeccable and I still can’t believe how much I loved this book and these characters. The perfect mix of steam, emotion, angst, and heart. Honestly, this book was perfection for me and will be a top 2020 read! I can’t recommend it enough.
Camden and Katherine’s story has intrigued me since they were introduced. It was always clear there was something going on behind the scenes. Katherine really took me by surprise. Her ice cold exterior is just her protective instinct after a life of feeling abandoned. Her journey was inspiring and something I didn’t fully expect. Camden was on a journey of self-discovery of his own, which definitely took a surprising turn! I loved being in the head of the most mysterious character of the Seasons series. The best part of this story is how Camden and Katherine learn to trust and rely on each other through the hardest parts of their individual journeys. They come out on the other side together and stronger than ever.
I love Camden and Katherine! Throughout this series I have always wanted more of their story and now that it’s here.. totally worth the wait. This is my favorite from this series. Rise of the villains!
When I first met Camden and Katherine in the Cruel Series, I thought they were they worst troublemakers, but after reading The Breaking Season they seemed to envolve into totally different people, who I could really like. They didn’t marry for love, it was a devised plan that would benefit both of them. What they didn’t expect was to feel drawn to one another, or the sexual chemistry they had. Will they let down their guards, and show eachother what they really feel for one another. I’m so glad I got to read this, and see them muddle through their feelings, and see them in a different light. I also liked the glimpse of past characters too. Great story!
“We’re not a fairy tale. We’re just… us.”
Camden Percy has stolen my heart! I was drawn into the story immediately!
What a story full of angst, passion and raw emotion.
I couldn’t wait to read Katherine and Camden’s story!
I have to be honest and say that I was not a fan of Katherine to begin with but the author made me change my mind very quickly. Her character has multiple layers and once you get to know and understand her character , you can only experience a wave of emotion.
Camden my Camden- the ruthless businessman, the loyal friend , the fixer and the husband! I love all his personalities.
The Villain Katherine and her Dark Prince look like the perfect match but can they make it work?
Special mention to JEM who brought tears to my eyes.
Breaking Season is a beautiful, emotional, heart wrenching story full of desire, misunderstandings and most importantly love.
HOLY CRAP. I mean seriously, how do I even tell you about my love for this book. The craziest part is that I requested to review the first book, The Lying Season, based solely on the cover and thinking the blurb sounded interesting. I had never read K.A. Linde before (that has now definitely changed as I’m working on her backlist). It was seriously one of my best decisions I’ve made in 2020. I am obsessed with this series. This group of Upper East Side friends can be vicious and the drama is real, but the author does such a good job at humanizing the characters. The Breaking Season is a perfect example of how amazing K.A. Linde is as an author. Katherine and Camden are anti-heroes. They come off as vapid and malicious, not only to others, but also each other. I kept wondering how I would feel about their story. After reading the first two books, and knowing I’d learn more about Katherine by reading Penn and Natalie’s series, I jumped into the Curel series. Honestly, I did not like Katherine, but there is this point in Cruel Legacy, where my heart aches for Katherine. This is how I knew K.A. Linde was going to destroy me in the best way with this story.
I was right. Camden and Katherine are everything I wanted and needed. This story gave me the full spectrum of emotions. They are a total mess, but I was rooting for them to get it together the entire time. I needed their HEA, like I needed my next breath. I couldn’t even put this one down! The backstory is key to really empathizing with these characters and figuring out why they’re doing what they’re doing. While trauma doesn’t excuse bad behavior, it definitely explains a lot of what’s been going on. It also helps show the amazing character growth these two undergo throughout this story. The amazing plot twists in this one make the entire story so much better too. I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say this is one of my most favorite books of 2020, which makes sense, because this may just be my favorite series of 2020!
Thank you to K.A. Linde and Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!!
I cannot say enough about how much I LOVE the world that KA Linde has created with this cast of characters. This book is another phenomenal addition to the Upper East Side she’s created. Camden and Katherine’s story is full of twists and turns. Just when you are patting yourself on the back for figuring something out -BOOM- another shoe drops. This one kept me on my toes, and had me loving characters that I previously loved to hate (although I don’t think for a second either of them has lost their edge!). Fantastic read; you will love it!

“I had no interest in his heart, and he had no interest in mine. It was better this way. Easier.”
Katherine Van Pelt and Camden Percy… Wow. What a rollercoaster! I have disliked Katherine since the beginning of the Cruel series, but I was so excited to get inside of her head in this book. Why did she marry Camden when she obviously didn’t want to? We finally get the full story in The Breaking Season, and it delivered!
Camden is the perfect alpha lead. I loved Camden from the very beginning. I just knew that his story would be great.
“She needed more than that. She needed handling.”
Camden and Katherine go back and forth and we see so many different sides of them. I really enjoyed seeing Katherine interacting with Jem. I love the softer side of her.
I loved how protective Camden was of everyone he loved. Protective alpha heroes are my favorite
“Don’t run from me. I’ve seen the worst of you, Katherine, and I’m still right here.”
And man, his love for Katherine… Wow. This was 100% my favorite book in the series, and they actually turned out to be my favorite Upper East Side couple!
Overall Grade:
“We were the villains of everyone else’s story. We were the hardened, darkened core that did whatever we had to in order to survive. To come out on top. But here, together, we were something else. Something more. Together, we could move mountains.”
What do you get when one game maker marries another game maker? Fireworks. Explosions. Emotional Upheaval, and two people with fractured souls waiting on the other to help fill in the fissure. For this reader, that is my most favoritest type of romance. Why? Because it’s life. Life is full of moments that tear away little bits of our soul, and we are waiting for people to use “soul glue” to help fill in the gaps whether it be through friendship, praise, or love. When romance authors (or authors in general) such as K.A. Linde reflect that pain beautifully AND offer it through the vehicle of love and romance, it’s magic on the page for me. And K.A. Linde does this well in her newest book, The Breaking Season. I began reading Linde with her last book, The Hating Season. This left me at a disadvantage as I had to quickly understand the relationships she had curated in the books leading to Court and English’s story. Even though it’s one of my favorite tropes (enemies-to-lovers), I struggled with these two. While they had clear chemistry, it felt like something was missing. YET, in the midst of their story, I was drawn to Court’s friends, Camden and Katherine, and their “arranged marriage.” Having missed out on Katherine’s story with Penn, I had to use my powers of deduction and some of the explanations from Linde to determine the wound inflicted on her soul from that relationship. That Linde wrote this book, The Breaking Season, to unpack Camden and Katherine piqued my interest. Immensely. And, in the end, this book did not disappoint. In the least.
I’ll be honest. I was a little trepidacious about reading the book, given my warm feelings about the last book. From the first chapter of The Breaking Season, though, I was gone. I could not put this book down for even one minute. I rearranged my day because the pain of these two inflicted on each other drew me in. I needed a happy ending for them; I needed them to realize that they were two sides of the same coin. As such, as they spewed ire and pain at each other, I kept turning the page. Linde so easily crafts a chemistry between Katherine and Camden that is equal parts lust and pain and you can’t turn away from it. One minute, she eeks out pieces of hope that they could possibly be in love with each other; in the next moment, that hope is washed away in a moment of anger and hurt. Over and over again, you watch and wait for the magic to begin, and Linde craftily grabs the moment from you. Until she doesn’t. Now, I’ve read this before in other stories, and the author takes it too far for too long and it feels like manipulation, not storytelling. Not here in The Breaking Season. In this book, Linde edges you to a point, and then she finally reveals the true gravity of Katherine and Camden’s love for each other. It’s inevitable that these two end up together because they are so alike, carrying the same life burdens.
Interwoven with Katherine and Camden’s story is a deeper one about control and its effects on choices (I don’t want to give it away, so I won’t say what it is). Know that it’s a serious life situation, and again, it adds to the gravity of this story. Both Katherine and Camden find redemption eventually when they stop trying to control everything in their lives, including each other. And this is where, I think, real-life resides in The Breaking Season.
While most of us aren’t Upper Eastsiders living lavish lives, becoming social media celebrities or CEO’s of billion-dollar companies, we are people who like to maintain control of situations so that we aren’t hurt by them or by others. However, as K.A. Linde aptly illustrates for us through Katherine and Camden in The Breaking Season, control causes us to relegate relationships and experiences to a back burner. We cannot fully fall and feel unless we allow others to hold our troubles in their hands. When we stop trying to control every moment or everything in our lives, what we might find is true happiness and relief from someone else helping us carry the burden of our world. This is the ultimate glorious truth of Linde’s latest book.
This story was everything! It has angst, possible betrayals, twists….and the character growth between the leads is insane!
This is the first book of this series that I’ve read. I was able to read it as a stand alone, and be fully immersed in our Upper East Side couple. I’m sure that if I go back and read the series there would be a ton of back story and history in there. I more than likely will go back because I’m curious about Fiona. Possibly Penn. I sort of liked just knowing Penn from this book. It made him more mysterious and complex for me. That all said, this is truly Camden and Katherine’s story.
Ms. Linde writes a story of a Manhattan Upper East Side arranged marriage. Both parties go into this marriage with a contract and understanding. The story opens in the past, at the wedding ceremony. We’re first introduced to Kathrine when one of her attendants is reassuring her that she can break the arrangement and just leave before saying her vows. Even as the reader is taking in that piece of drama, the author then describes Katherine’s reaction to seeing her lost love sitting in the church with his girlfriend – watching as Katherine gets married to another man. This is one of two places in the story where I feel I slighted myself by not reading the earlier books. The emotions described and captured in this scene are raw, honest, and heavy. They don’t need the full backstory, I’m just an OCD reader who likes to know it all.
The story then moves us forward to present day. Things between Camden and Katherine are at the very rock of the bottom. I’m not even sure if it could be classified as “keeping up appearances” these two are so emotionally worn down, guarded, and protective of themselves it’s painful to read. It’s that good book sort of painful.
The plot takes us on with to the strain of the relationship wearing on them both to the point that they declare a truce in order to just let the emotional weight and toll go for a week while they are on vacation with their “crew”. This seems to work, and as a reader you can feel the possibilities sitting there for these two…but it’s tantalizingly just out of reach. Then, suddenly, it all blows up in their faces.
At the start of the story I felt that this book had a very Gossip Girl vibe to it. Ms. Linde has perfectly captured the swirl and ongoing cauldron of betrayals, lack of trust, and the all important “appearances” for these Manhattan power families. Yet, within this bubble of strife, there IS a tight family of friends who are there for each other. Camden is newer to this crew. He also comes with his own strings. The mistrust between Katherine’s group and Camden’s people drive a lot of their emotional armor towards each other.
Presented in alternating chapters from both main characters POVs is wonderfully frustrating to the reader. You alone are able to see the weight and the vulnerability that each character holds. The tension between them in allowing themselves to put aside past history and just let each other see themselves for who they are is poignant. Ms. Linde also ensures that Camden and Katherine return to that history to finally describe what actually happened on either side.
Both the female and male characters in this novel are so strong and yet so incredibly vulnerable at the same time you won’t want to stop reading, even as they break your heart. Trust me, I wanted to throw my book at Katherine a few times and Camden….I wanted to tie him to a chair and just make him LISTEN. For such a broken lost little boy, he is so incredibly fierce and protective of his people. If only he’d let them know the why of his actions rather than the “never complain, never explain” royal route.
While I began the read with the Gossip Girl vibe, that quickly dissipated as Camden and Katherine began to bleed through the pages. There is so much depth and so many layers to this novel that to assume it would stay at the catty, petty, game playing level is a disservice to the book.
I know I’m being incredibly vague in this review towards the actual plot, the tension points, and some outcomes. My apologies. This is a story that immediately drags you kicking into the thick of it. As a reader you feel a sense of being dropped into a play that is already 16 scenes in, and you aren’t sure if you missed intermission or not. It’s difficult to describe the plot adequately without revealing potential key issues.
If you are looking for a book that includes unresolved or ignored childhood trauma, inter family competitions, heavy parental issues, controlling outside interests and two main characters who were raised in a “don’t trust anything” world…this is your read. It’s a deep compelling story of two people learning to grow into themselves and trust that there will be someone there for them. It’s a story of two broken children who allow their adult selves to finally believe they are worthy of love and love is not cruel or condition laden.
This book beautifully broke my heart and then perfectly put it back together.
The Breaking Season is the third book of the Seasons series by K.A. Linde. I was expecting this book after The Hating Season, because I felt like Camden and Katherine could give me the angst I usually look for in a romance, and they delivered.
Katherine Van Pelt is a socialite who used to be filthy rich, but after her father committed fraud, she was only left with her trust fund to support her lifestyle. One could argue that rich kids had big funds, but Katherine knew that since she didn’t have a job, she needed to do something otherwise she would really end up in the streets. She decided to marry Camden Percy, then, because they both needed each other to reach their goals. Katherine would have her funds to furnish her socialite lifestyle, but Camden would also get his end of the deal. Before I delve into that, I just wanted to say I realized later in the story that Katherine is none other than David’s sister from The Wright Love duet, which is another series by K.A. Linde I enjoyed very much (if you haven’t picked up, go, it’s set in Texas). Katherine seems like a brainless brat at first, only caring to take the perfect shot for her followers online or to organize the perfect party, but she is more than that. She is smart, she is trying to find her place in the world despite Camden may think she’s just posting random pics of them on the web. In the end she ends up really finding something she likes, and I loved her growth.
Camden Percy is a businessman. We saw him in The Hating Season because he was Court’s best friend, and we see how powerful he is. He has a menacing presence to those who do not know him, but this is due to the fact that he needs to be credible, he needs to seem powerful to be great at his job. Camden has a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders, he loves his job but he also knows that his father won’t bat an eye if he makes a mistake, which makes him very grumpy at first. He is a bit angry because after one year of marriage, Katherine still hasn’t fulfilled her end of the deal, which is give Camden an heir. Camden was very complicated and had various issues he also needed to face in order to be in a relationship with Katherine.
Camden and Katherine were an enemies to lovers couple with a lot of angst. It is evident from the first chapters that they want each other, they are comfortable with each other, but they also have personal issues which they need to resolve before they are able to be together and be honest to each other.
They were my favorite couple so far and they didn’t disappoint me! I loved their raw passion, the way they were characterized, the story. It was never dull, and you could find new developments chapter after chapter.
This is the book I’ve been waiting for. Ever since I first ‘met’ Katherine and Camden briefly in The Hating Season, I’ve been desperate for their story. And what a story it is!
Camden and Katherine have an arranged marriage. They’re not in love, they can barely stand to be around each other but they both have something the other one wants. I was so intrigued by Camden, right from the first mention of him my curiosity was piqued and I needed to know more. So I was a little surprised to find myself feeling the same way about Kathleen. She is not what I was expecting. Well she was, the hard exterior etc was expected but once you see behind her mask you find there’s so much more to her. She’s so good at faking it and hiding behind a facade that it’s become second nature for her but when you see the real Kathleen you find this woman whose feeling a little lost, who doesn’t really know what she wants from life and who isn’t as confident and put together has she’d like you to believe.
I knew before I started this that I was going to love Camden…and I did. He’s not without his faults, he’s cold and closed off at times, secretive, but I still loved him. Like Kathleen there’s more to his character than meets the eye and the more I found out about him, the more I loved him. I am most definitely a Camden fan.
This book has everything I like in it. The marriage of convenience, the messy feelings left behind from previous relationships that need dealing with, the angst, the fighting, the characters that are so much more than I was expecting and don’t even get me started on the chemistry between Camden and Kathleen. I had really high hopes for their story and KA Linde definitely delivered.
As soon as I started reading this book, I knew it was going to be soooo good! Before starting, I did a quick skim of the Cruel Money and Season series, to get a refresher on Katherine and Camden. I couldn’t help but be trapped again in the world of these Upper Eastsiders! As I gave close attention to all the tidbits about Katherine and Camden, I saw details I hadn’t stored away in memory because I was more focused on the other main characters. But now!!!! I was ready and raring to get started on this adventure. This was the most intriguing of all the couples!
Katherine belongs to the Crew, Camden has his own crew, composed of Court Kensington, Gavin, and Sam (Lark’s boyfriend). The Crew is a group of friends who have known each other since childhood, attended the same schools and they all belong to that rarified society group called the Upper East Side. They are the movers and the shakers and they are old money. The Crew members are entitled, liars, cruel, manipulative and very loyal to each other. Camden has wanted Katherine for a long time and is jealous of Penn Kensington, a Crew member. Even though Penn is already married to Natalie, Camden is jealous of what he perceives are Katherine’s feelings towards Penn. In previous books we have seen their shenanigans and tantrums regarding Penn and Fiona, the woman with whom Camden has been connected to. It’s all a turmoil of passion, lust, sex and jealousy galore!
From the beginning, I knew that Camden and Katherine had feelings for each other. They were just mired in mistrust and jealousy. Their relation was based in constant fights, which served as foreplay. But Camden wants something from Katherine that’s she’s not ready for, and Katherine is utterly unhappy in her life. As she sees her friends all entering happy relations, all she’s left with is a sham of a marriage that has been strictly convenience for the last year. Most of their enmity is based on Katherine’s fear of opening her heart to Camden and having it broken again. And Camden, being such a powerful man, has no finesse in wooing a woman; he’s demanding, possessive, and arrogant.
“He was blank. I wondered what he saw when he looked at me. What went on in that head of his. He was calculated and strategic in every aspect of his life. But I never actually knew what he was thinking. He never yielded an inch.”
There was a very important issue on women’s self-image and the restraints society places on a woman’s form. I loved that this was discussed!
“But wasn’t that normal? Didn’t society tell us to keep working on our body? That we could always be healthier? Hadn’t people complimented me on my newer, smaller figure? Wasn’t that what everyone said they wanted? I’d been given all of these opportunities because my body was smaller.”
I loved the growing up they did during the story, both individually and as a couple. I loved that the story was written in dual language so that the reader could understand the thoughts and feelings of both characters. From the first book, Camden was such a douche, that I had no faith the author could vindicate him. And yet, she did and spectacularly! I was so surprised at his inner thoughts, I didn’t know his feelings ran so deep. He’s not broken but he has unresolved issues. I saw Katherine as a woman with a frail soul. Losing her father to prison, her brother going away and her mother retreating into her mind, harmed her soul to such an extent, that the effects are still felt years away. Through the book we read about Katherine’s struggles and we feel such compassion for her, so different from the cheerful hate we felt in the first books of the Cruel series!
I loved and enjoyed this passionate and emotional story! I was impressed with the story of Katherine and Camden, their trials and tribulations and how they managed to save their love. KA Linde has raised the bar so high with this book that I just can’t imagine what she’ll come up with next!
Of the books I have read in this series by K.A. Linde’s The Breaking Season has to be the most complex and complicated. Katherine and Camden have an arranged marriage, but that seems to be the most uncomplicated thing about their relationship. It is evident from the beginning they are attracted to each other, but each has built up such considerable walls to hide all their individual brokenness; what is revealed is the perfect upper East Side socialite couple.
Both characters are stubborn, but you can see that there is a deep desire on both parts to get it right. However, what the reader ends up with more often than not is trainwreck after trainwreck of miscommunication, jumping to conclusions, and walking away instead of talking. But the transformation does slowly take place, and understanding, respect, and passion replace the negativity. They are introduced to a deeper level of caring than they have ever encountered, which literally changes their lives.
I have enjoyed this series as this bunch of, let’s be real, entitled wealthy people deal with the generational crap that imbues wealth and position more than we like to acknowledge. I love these people finding out there is more to life than the society page or followers on Instagram. And of course, I do enjoy the happily ever after. There’s a couple in the making that I think will be the most emotional of the series, and I am so looking forward to that gem. However, do yourself a favor and read the Breaking Season, to really see behind the facades and walls people build up around their hearts to protect themselves. Yes, this was a Breaking Season.
Linde’s best contemporary to date!! Katherine and Camden’s story is one I’ve been slowly dying for and it absolutely did not disappoint. No one can redeem characters and deliver all the angst and sexy goodness quite like her. Love!
The book I was waiting for all year and it EXCEEDED my expectations!
Gahhhhh Camden and Katherine! You sure gave us a run for our money! You both had to be complex and difficult, but I loved every angsty, agonizing step of it! I soaked up every emotion that K.A. Linde made me feel in this book and I could not put it down until I read the last word. Camden and Katherine each had deep-seated issues they to work through that made it difficult for them to really be who they were with each other.
They finally got there and I loved every minute of the rollercoaster of emotions that only a K.A. Linde book can give you!
4.5 stars
My first book from K.A. Linde was an absolute winner! This book has some of my favourite tropes, so it was a no-brainer for me to pick it up; I’m so glad that I did!
Katherine and Camden’s wedding is a business arrangement. She’s in need of money and he needs a woman by his side. They aren’t really a couple. For the first year of their marriage, they live separately and only meet for public functions. Camden has a business to run and Katherine has a life as an Upper East Side socialite. They are both headstrong. Their constant fighting and bickering only made the passion between them simmer. Their sexual tension is palpable and is fuelled by their strong feelings of hate and underlying love. They are in a battle of wills, neither of them backing down. However, circumstances will force them to be real with each after all!
I really enjoyed the book. Camden and Katherine’s encounters were entertaining, and their intimate times were too hot! I’m really curious to find out more about their lives and the secondary characters’ as well. I’ll be checking the rest of the books soon!!
