A powerful and resonant novel from Tom Franklin — critically acclaimed author of Smonk and Hell at the Breech — Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter tells the riveting story of two boyhood friends, torn apart by circumstance, who are brought together again by a terrible crime in a small Mississippi town. An extraordinary novel that seamlessly blends elements of crime and Southern literary fiction, … Southern literary fiction, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is a must for readers of Larry Brown, Pete Dexter, Ron Rash, and Dennis Lehane.

This is one of the stories that is disturbing to read but important to read. The way the difficult situations are interpreted by each characters is honest and more probable than we often like to admit.
I’ve had this book on my shelf for a few years now. I’m glad I finally got around to reading it. Such a well woven story. At times emotional, at others deeply disturbing, this book also carried a redemption thread which was woven beautifully.
a rare book with honest characters and a story that illustrates how decisions can impact a lifetime.
Having grown up in the South during the period in which part of this book was set, I found the writer’s portrayal of the Southern underclass to be realistic.
Clever storyline and well written.
VERY good. Thought provoking how your actions/inactions have far reaching consequences.
Great book, wonder why Mr. Franklin hasn’t written more.
The characters and the setting is so realistic . Every page returns you to time and place of small town living. The single thing I didn’t like about the book was finishing it!
A great study of life in a small southern town, friendship, and the power of other people’s judgments. This is a novel with a crime in it more than a traditional mystery.
