NYPD Detective Alec MacAidan has always been good with weird. After all, his life has been a string of the unexplainable. But when an injured man gives him cryptic clues, then turns to dust in front of him, Alec’s view on weird is changed forever.Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last thousand years waiting for Alec. He’d been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he … but he didn’t expect him to be human, and he certainly didn’t expect that shield to be a police badge.
Both men, strong-willed and stubborn, are still learning how to cope with the push and pull of being fated, when fate throws them another curveball.
Rumors have spread quickly of turmoil in Egypt. Covens are fleeing with news of a vampire who has a talent like no other, hell-bent on unleashing the wrath of Death.
Alec and Cronin are thrown into a world of weird Alec cannot imagine. What he learned in school of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods was far from the truth. Instead, he finds out firsthand that history isn’t always what it seems.

I’ve fallen in love with a new series and a new cast of characters. Paranormal M/M romance at its best right here! I loved every moment and can’t wait to dip into book 2.
One of my fave series!!
It was so fun, I don’t know why it took me so long to get to it, totally worth it.
I have been more in contact with Scotland so far and it’s sounds like a beautiful place, it’s nice that books get to other places others than just USA and his states, love diversity and discover new places.
Alec was so straightforward, I loved him since first sight, he was so cute and Eiji made me the book good lord, he was crazy.
Cronin was so Scottish but that was awesome actually, he was badass.
A pretty cool one, and Leslie’s voice made it so fun to hear it, best voice for this that could have been.
One of my friends (who is trying to send me broke with all her book and audible recommendations) was listening to this one and her updates had me chomping at the bit to read/listen to this series.
I am hooked. I loved Cronin and Alec, I loved the way vampires were used as big players in world history.
On to book 2, pronto.
Alec chases a perp that changes his life forever. as the man dies in his arms he mumbles some mysterious words. Another of the men there turn to dust and there is a wooden bullet in it. At the station things get stranger. A handsome man pops in, grabs Alec and they disappear and magically appear in a swanky New York City Condo. To make things stranger Alec wasn’t afraid and he even knew that the man was Cronin and that he was supposed to go with him. Things get more mysterious from there as he meets Cronin’s friends, the council of vampires and try to figure out the Key to stop the Vampire Queen from bringing old dangerous vampires to life to wipe out the good ones and save the world.
Sound exciting? It is!
I absolutely loved all of the characters. The storyline was so good you didn’t want to stop once you started. Even though Alec and Cronin are destined mates it wasn’t a ‘oh please turn me and make me yours’ thing… They took their time and it was a nice slow burn. there are some sexy times and a bit of humor woven to break the tension.
Joel Leslie is a favorite narrator of mine. I know when I pick up audio he narrates I can expect great vices with plenty of good accents where needed. Cronin’s Scottish brogue is spot on and Igi’s Japanese one is as we. You can easily tell the character apart. The pacing is good and the excitement shows in his voice.
I highly recommend this audio if you love police detectives, vampire stories and an allover great story to listen to make your chores or time in the car go faster.
Cronin is nothing short of amazing. I totally have a major book crush.
N.R. Walker just knocks it out of the park each time, I swear. This was just so fantastic. I loved every single vampire, every minute. All the words.
I loved the narration by Joel Leslie. He had each separate voice down, each accent, magically done.
Bravo.
This was my first N.R. Walker book and I loved it.
The story moved along at a pace that kept me turning pages and wanting to know what happened next. I enjoyed the romantic thread, but what I admired most was the author’s ability to twist and manipulate what we know of history to give the reader something fresh and interesting. Looking forward to reading the sequel.

Audible Review:
Overall 5*
Performance 5+++*

Loved it!
I don’t read a lot of paranormal books, but I recently finished the Red Dirt Heart series so I thought I’d continue on a NR Walker binge and I’m so glad I did! How many reviews can I start by saying “I love this book so much!”??? Well, let’s mark this down as another one! I loved it!
I loved Cronin and Alec and all the delicious sexual tension radiating off of them. Gah! I loved Eiji (sooo funny) and Jodis. I loved Alec’s dad Cole. This book made me so happy, I’d find myself with a goofy grin on my face while listening.
There were times I was tempted to grab my phone and sneak read while at work becasue I wasn’t able to listen and I wanted to keep going, but the audiobook was EVERYTHING so I never cheated. Joel did such a freaking incredible job! His narration was truly brilliant. 2 silly things, but I loved the way Cronin said “No” and the way Alec said “Oh”. I don’t know what it was about those two words, but they just made me smile.
I want this series to be on television- who do we need to speak to, to get this done???
