Meet Egyptologist Amelia Peabody in the first mystery in the Victorian-era set, New York Times bestselling “sparkling series” (Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review).
“If Indiana Jones were female, a wife, and a mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson.”–Publishers Weekly Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her debut … indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her debut Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way to Cairo, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been abandoned by her scoundrel lover. Together the two women sail up the Nile to an archeological site run by the Emerson brothers-the irascible but dashing Radcliffe and the amiable Walter. Soon their little party is increased by one-one mummy that is, and a singularly lively example of the species.
Strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn. Now Amelia finds herself up against an unknown enemy-and perilous forces that threaten to make her first Egyptian trip also her last . . .
Praise for Elizabeth Peters and Crocodile on the Sandbank

I can’t recommend Elizabeth Peter’s books highly enough! The characters come to life — whether you want them to or not! The settings are vivid and delicious, the action just twisted enough to keep you guessing. Start here and read them all, you won’t regret it.
The first in a tremendous series set in Egypt and the Middle East, it covers the romances and adventures of a clan of female and male archeologists from late 1800’s through post World War I. Witty, hilarious, fast paced and suspenseful. This first book is a light, quick read that sets up the main characters; as the series goes on you are …
This is one of my go-to novels when I want something fluffy, fun, and familiar. I’ve read it several times over the years, usually when I am in a bit of a reading slump but still want something to keep my brain occupied while I flounder about trying to discover a new book or series to love. Over-the-top, loud, and brash, Amelia and Emerson are …
I never thought Elizabeth Peters could live up to the hype. I was wrong. Amelia Peabody is one of the most endearing sleuths in mystery ever.
the whole series is a continual delight
I loved this story. It had so many things I love in stories – adventure, mystery, romance, humor…and so much more!
Loved this book and the characters. Mystery, intrigue, adventure, women with gumption and soul. Very fun!
Wonderful setting and engaging characters I absolutely fell in love with! While I enjoyed seeing how the mystery developed and unfolded, I adored the witty interactions between the characters — especially Emerson and Miss Peabody. What a fun, humorous glimpse into the past of a strong women born in the wrong era! I look forward to reading more of …
great series. Loved watching Ramses grow up
I love Ancient Egypt and the Archeology of that period. I devour books written in or about that topic. I’ve even written my own stories!
I love the Amelia Peabody series written by Elizabeth Peters. So far I’ve read 12 and am reading #13.
I invite you to join me!
A historical mystery set in the late 19th century among archaeologists in Egypt, this book has it all. Elizabeth Peters, a.k.a. Barbara Mertz, is my personal hero and has influenced my writing more than anyone else. Her quirky characters are unrivaled, her humor timeless, and her research impeccable (Barbara was a PhD in Egyptology).
Start with this one in Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody series and you will be hooked for more than twenty volumes. Informatively written by an Egyptologist with a setting in early 20th century archeology. I’m starting my third reading of the series after many years away, and still find it enjoyable.
This book has a slew start but got better as it went. One is for into it I couldn’t put it down.
I love this entire series. They were written several years ago, but give a great feel for the Egyptian excavations in the early 1900’s.
The central character, Amelia Peabody, is always entertaining. She is one step ahead of any mysteries or murders that come her way. She and husband are in harmony fighting or not.
A wonderful, absolutely “addictive” series, about an eccentric “old maid” Englishwoman who goes to Egypt and lives there the rest of her life…..the first book in the series (“the Crocodile on the Sandbank”) isn’t up the standard of the rest but is necessary to get the early life of Amelia, the reason she went to Egypt, and so on….please do …
I love everything about this book! Amelia is a unique and awesome heroine. The plot is satisfyingly twisty. The dialog (both internal and external) is hysterical. Elizabeth Peters is a wonderful writer!
