Meet Egyptologist Amelia Peabody in the first mystery in the Victorian-era set, New York Times bestselling “sparkling series” (Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review).
“If Indiana Jones were female, a wife, and a mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson.”–Publishers Weekly Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her debut … indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her debut Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way to Cairo, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been abandoned by her scoundrel lover. Together the two women sail up the Nile to an archeological site run by the Emerson brothers-the irascible but dashing Radcliffe and the amiable Walter. Soon their little party is increased by one-one mummy that is, and a singularly lively example of the species.
Strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn. Now Amelia finds herself up against an unknown enemy-and perilous forces that threaten to make her first Egyptian trip also her last . . .
Praise for Elizabeth Peters and Crocodile on the Sandbank

“Grand views of Egyptian antiquities . . . a sparkling series.” -Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

Melodramatic – to say the least! I love this series!
This story is funny, romantic, and action packed with colorful characters. Amelia Peabody isn’t your typical Victorian lady having been raised in a house filled with male siblings and motherless. Being the youngest, she is left to her own devices and becomes self-taught in many subjects …
This is the beginning of a series that really got me to absolutely LOVE reading. The characters are well developed, the plot line is awesome, and you get introduced to one of my all time favorite heroines, Amelia Peabody!
The urge for comfort food in my reading continues. I’ve turned once more to the wonderful Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series; Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first title. The characters are absolutely wonderful. I love Amelia. I love Emerson. I love Ramses (who comes along later in the series). The style of the series will probably keep …
Love this historical series that takes place in Egypt during the time many of the major tombs and ruins were being found. Read them all. Terrific sense of place and delightful, humorous characters.
My favorite cozy mystery author! I love her Vicky Bliss series too. I’ve read all the Barbara Michaels titles even though Gothic isn’t my favorite genre. She was just a genius when it came to writing great characters. Love this whole series.
This wonderful historical novel has held up well through the years. The characters still ring true, the historical setting is surprisingly accurate, the romance sweet, the humor still funny, the action engaging. If you haven’t read this series (this is the first book), make some time to do so. You’ll enjoy it!
One of my favorite series!
I adored this book! Probably the best literary mystery I’ve read. Witty and romantic and beautifully written. I couldn’t put it down and was so sad when it ended. Luckily there’s a whole series!!!
One of my all-time favorite books by one of my all-time favorite writers. I love Elizabeth Peters’ abilities to pull me into a story from the first paragraph. The Amelia Peabody series is both educational and hilarious. If you want to learn about Egyptology in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in a fun way, look no further than this …
The first mystery starring the intrepid, hilarious Amelia Peabody, who was a major influence on my character Sybil Ingram. This book is a delight!
Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first Amelia Peabody book by Elizabeth Peters. I remember reading it years ago and thinking – wow – I’ve always wanted to be an archaeologist and Amelia Peabody is the archaeologist that I aspired to be.
In Victorian-era times, Amelia is not a young girl, locked into the norms of Society. She is a 32 year old …
I love the characters in this series.
Fun series with some historical information
I have read every book that has been written by this author
This kick-off novel of the whole Peabody-and-Emerson series is a hoot, besides being written by a great Egyptologist. It was startling to discover that Emerson, like my own hero Dr. Lewis, has big blue eyes. Must be a pre-requisite for the complete archaeological hero-wonk. Starts a bit slowly but builds to some rip-roaring action and clever …
This series was one of my favorites, though I had not reread it in a number of years. The first in the Amelia Peabody series, this is one of my favorites. Amelia is a cranky, independent woman who is firmly “on the shelf” at age 32. Her forthright manner and refusal to take any guff from anyone is what I enjoyed most, back then and now. I …
As a female during the Victorian era in England, Amelia Peabody is ahead of her time. Unmarried and independently wealthy, she has no need for a man or most of societal conventions. With a passion for Egyptology and a thirst for adventure, she decides to travel to Cairo, taking into her company along the way a young woman whose reputation has been …
5 stars – I loved it!
Amelia Peabody, a rebel of the Victorian age, embarks on an Egyptian adventure expecting to explore the sites and see past history. Instead she rescues a young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who was abandoned by her scoundrel lover, solves a mystery of a haunting mummy, and falls for the dashing but annoying Radcliffe.
I slowly …
Delightful Victorian mystery! So glad my friends suggested I read Elizabeth Peter’s books!
This is one of my favorite books of all time!
