They met in a war-torn city on the other side of the world and shared an anonymous night of passion. They didn’t intend to meet again. Nor did they think they’d be reunited by sinister secrets…
Five years later, FBI Agent Savannah Kane is headed to a small town in Georgia for the funeral of her best friend’s husband. Going home is fraught with complications, but Savannah never imagined one of … complications, but Savannah never imagined one of those would be Ryker Stone, the stranger she’d shared an unforgettable night with.
Haunted by an ambush that took the lives of two men in his unit, Ryker now copes by living a solitary civilian life. Attending the funeral of yet another soldier, this one lost to a senseless accident, he is shocked to run into the beautiful stranger he has never forgotten.
When another man in Ryker’s former unit dies under suspicious circumstances, he suspects that someone is targeting his team. He’s determined to get to the truth; Savannah is just as determined to get answers for her friend. Neither wants to work with the other, and as they struggle with trust and attraction, the truth grows murkier…and more dangerous. Will finding answers reveal secrets neither one of them is ready to know?

Critical Doubt is book # 7 in the Off the Grid Series by Barbara Freethy. Even though this is book #7 it can very well be read as a standalone, that being said I would suggest reading the whole series it is that good. Ms. Freethy wrote a suspenseful and action packed story which drew me right in, making me forget everything else and did not let me go until I turned the last page. Once I started reading I could not put it down I had to keep turning the pages because I needed to know what happened. I was on the edge of my seat with all the twists and turns and of course the romance mixed in. I love how we are reunited with some of the characters from the previous books. I don’t know how she does it but each book is better than the previous one. I love this series and don’t want it to end. I’m excited to see what she has in store for us next!
ARC for honest review with no compensation
Critical Doubt is book 7 in Off The Grid: FBI series by Barbara Freethy and another awesome read in this series!!
5 years ago….Ryker Stone on leave overseas mistakes Savannah Kane as a cheerleader that’s been entertaining the troops and they have a one night fling, sharing no information except a hot steamy night!
Fast forward 5 years later, they meet again at the funeral of Ryker’s teammate and Savannah’s best friend’s husband…
What happens next takes you on a roller coaster ride of suspense, secrets, faking death, twists, turns and more questions than answers but oh what an ending!!
Let me just tell you, this book is amazing!!! This story of FBI agent Savannah Kane who goes to the funeral for the husband of one of her oldest friends, only to run into a man she had her first and last one time fling with 5 years earlier, is one of the best stories of Barbara Freethy’s yet! Ryker Stone was once part of an elite Army ranger unit that after an attack left 2 dead, and several injured. When Ryker hears that another member of his team has died, he knows he has to come back to attend his funeral. He doesn’t count on seeing the woman who, after 5 years, is still someone he can’t forget.
This story will captivate you and keep you hanging in suspense! Page after page, line after line, you won’t be able to stop reading until you know all the secrets of Rykers’ team. And watching the beautiful chemistry between Savannah and Ryker play out will touch your soul. Seeing how the love of another person can actually heal your heart and bring peace. Nothing but praise to Barbara Freethy for another amazing story
Critical Doubt by Barbara Freethy is the seventh book in her off the Grid FBI series.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
It all started five years ago with a spectacular one night stand. But he can’t stop thinking about her and she can’t stop thinking about him. Now they are back together because of 2 tragic deaths. He is suffering from PTSD and two members from his former team are dead now. Is he next or are the other two members of his team on the hit list? She is a top FBI agent. Can she help him find the truth and conquer his panic. But is that what it is? He hears bells and then sees blinding light. But there weren’t any bells on that last terrible mission, and he is the only one who hears them.
As Ryker and Savannah try to find the truth behind the deaths and what really is going on, they become closer to each other as well as the truth.
In what I consider her best book so far, the author takes the reader on a winding trail of regret, loss, fear, pain, and finally love. You won’t want to put this one down. I hope you love it as much as I did!
This story delivered right from the beginning! As with all Barbara Freethy books, the characters were well fleshed out & three dimensional. While it is more of an action book, it had elements of romance that kept the story well rounded & interesting. The action sequences were well written & created a sense of drama. I really didn’t see that ending coming! I really enjoy this series!
Barbara freethy has become one of my favorite authors. The new book Critical Doubt. It was action-packed from beginning to end with a love story woven in between. It was a great read and I look forward to more books in the future.
Critical Doubt is book 7 in a suspense series written by Barbara Freethy. This book is about FBI agent Savannah Kane. Heading back home is never easy for Savannah because of her troubled youth and bad memories, but she needs to be by her best friend as she buries her husband. The funeral isn’t the only hard obstacle that she needs to face.
Ryker is attending the funeral of one of his best friends and a member of his Army Ranger Unit. He has had a lot of regrets with distancing himself from his team now that they are stateside after a horrific mission that went bad. He is still healing and being in crowds or hearing certain noises sets off a horrible chain of events in his head. Attending this funeral is very hard for Ryker, but the events that happen after the funeral really is where this whole story begins.
Savannah never expected to see Ryker again after their one night stand five years prior, but here they are at this funeral and they never leave each other’s side as events start to unravel and happen around them. They need to work together to stop people around them from dieing and to have each other’s back so they can catch the person who keeps trying to kill them too. There is a lot of action and suspenseful moments that take place as big secrets start to come to the surface. I like that we get to see some of the past FBI characters from previous books. Get ready for an action packed ride. This book can be read as a standalone, but why not order the others because every book in this series is awesome. Critical Doubt is a great addition to this series!
With each new book the FBI Off the Grid Series just keeps getting better!
Book #7 in Barbara Freethy’s FBI Off the Grid series is another well-written romantic suspense novel that keeps your attention from the first chapter to the last. I couldn’t put it down. Ms. Freethy has a talent for creating believable characters and situations that keep you on the edge of your seat.
Critical Doubt can be read as a stand-alone, but you don’t want to miss the rest of the books in this series. Each book features one of a group of FBI agents who became close friends while training together at Quantico. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-written romantic suspense I really enjoyed this book and the whole FBI Off the Grid Series.
Loved it lots of drama, suspense, and just a great read
Wow what a ride! This latest addition to the FBI series is every bit as suspenseful and gripping as the rest and I just couldn’t put it down and read it in just one sitting! From the very start the storyline grabs you and reels you in and you find yourself on the edge of your seat the whole time! With a fantastic plot there were twists and turns I definitely did not see coming, there’s action, betrayal, heartbreak, some steamy romance and a big shock at the end! I love this series and I loved reading about Savannah and Ryker and got so lost in their story and I totally recommend you read all seven books!
Love love love this book! Savannah and Ryker have a past that has haunted them both over the last 5years. Tragedy brings them together. In this classic Barbra Freethy thriller, Savannah and Ryker work together to save their friends and learn how they got together.
What happens when you run into a one night stand (literally) you haven’t seen in five years? A lot happens! Savanna Kane goes back to her hometown of Dobbs, Georgia to attend the funeral of her best friend Abby’s husband Paul. She has known that the mystery man she slept with was on Paul’s Army Ranger team from a picture she had seen two years before. Ryker Stone was blindsided by bumping into Savannah as he never even knew her name. After brief introductions, and an accident involving another Ranger team member after the funeral, Ryker and Savannah are linked as they try to find out what happened. Savannah’s FBI team members and Quantico friends also jump in to support and help. Barbara Freethy takes us on the journey with Savannah and Ryker as they try to get some answers as to what is happening to Ryker’s former team. Can they also overcome the one night stand to be more? They seem to have so much more in common than they expected. This author’s writing kept me riveted to the story that I could not put down. Definitely a 5 star read.
Army Rangers. Bad intelligence on a mission. An explosion and soldiers are dead and injured. Lives are changed. Then, the survivors of the mission begin dying off in odd accidents. Is someone targeting them? Who could it be? Is it just a coincidence?
Wow…I think this is the best book yet of this series. Ryker the commander of the ambushed unit, is in town attending the funeral of one of the men under his command in that ill-fated attack. Savannah is the best friend of the wife of the dead former soldier. Ryker and Savannah had a one-night stand five years ago and meet again at the funeral. The spark is still there. With Ryker needing answers and Savannah being with the FBI, they join forces and begin to uncover corruption that might put weapons into the wrong hands, again.
I can honestly say that this is one book where I really didn’t see that ending coming! Fabulous story. Lots of twists and turns. Who can you trust?
Seventh book in this fast paced series and tied as my favorite. We meet Savannah Kane, FBI and Ryker Stone damaged veteran who join forces to unravel their pasts and future in this romantic thriller. Add this to your TBR list. These books can be read as stand-alone’s, but the whole series is well worth the read.
Savannah and Ryker have a history. This was one wild ride with so many twists and turns. Loved how the author was able to slowly give the reader clues and bring it all together at the end. I have read the other books in this series and enjoyed seeing previous characters. However, you can read this one without having read the others. While it is a romance the suspense, mystery, and crime solving was what grabbed me and kept me reading.
If you like exciting, edge of your seat books with suspense and romance then you will love this book. This book keeps you guessing throughout the story. There are so many twists, turns and shocks in this book.
Savannah is an FBI agent going back to her home town where her best friends’ husband is being buried. Savannah is a strong willed, excellent agent as well as a loving, and supportive friend. Savannah runs into Ryker, who she had a fling with five years ago, at the funeral. Ryker was the leader of the Rangers unit her friends’ husband was in. Ryker has kept a low profile as he has problems with hearing bells in his head at times and gets lost with what he is doing. There is another death of one of the team members right after the funeral. Everyone is devastated. Savannah and Ryker team up together to see if someone is trying to take out the whole team. I loved how Savannah and Ryker are able to back each other up. The trust they build is great for their relationship. This is the start of a scary adventure where Savannah and Ryker are getting shot at, blown up and so much more. I was surprised at the end. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review
Critical Doubt is an exciting mystery story that will have you guessing until the very end of the book. A troop of soldiers were sent on a mission in Afghanistan where two were killed. Now back in the states and trying to heal from their wounds both physical and mental, the rest of the troop suddenly start to die. Is it from suicide or is someone killing them. The leader of the troop, Ryker, attends the funeral of one of his men where he meets up with Savannah. She was a one night stand five years ago when he thought she was part of a dance troupe. Turns out she now is an FBI agent. Together they try to figure out why his troop of men are now dying. This is a wonderful storyline with a love story mixed in with the mystery of the dead soldiers. This is one that will keep you up at night to finish and keep you guessing until the end. I couldn’t put it down. It was that good.
Savannah and Ryker share a bit of history when they meet again 5 years later at a funeral. What follows is an exciting, suspenseful and wonderful
story. So many twists and turns and
a very surprising ending. I could not put this book down. The romance was intense. The mystery was very well done. Wonderful characters, as always.
CRITICAL DOUBT….Barbara Freethy
For Ryker the past seven months have been hell for him, his team and a deadly ambush. Now a third member’s funeral, none was in the army now.
He needed to find out why Paul was up on the roof drinking from morning to night,, looking at his picture and then at Abbey and her seven year old son.
For Abby she feels guilty, Paul wasn’t the man she married, and she couldn’t
help him, and he refused getting help. She had secrets she had not told till
now. Telling Savannah, her friend and FBI agent now, but there was more.
The team did it for their country, now they were broken, scared and part of
them have died. A deep emotional look, at the wounded men serving our
country. The impact when home, and trying to adjust. They.wanted answers,
needed answers to move on, of what happened. Can Ryker and Savannah
find them, with attempts against them, to stop. It will impact readers, the
characters were real, the emotions were real, and long remembered
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
I LOVED this book!!! It’s a great addition to Barbara Freethy’s FBI series! It can be a standalone, but I highly recommend you read the entire series first, so youget to know the whole team and their history. It makes the story and character’s experiences so much richer, interesting, and more fun! I highly recommend!
