When a mysterious serial killer known as “M” launches a deranged “investigation”, Alex Cross and his partner must unearth long-forgotten secrets to survive — or risk getting buried themselves. In a Virginia penitentiary, Alex Cross and his partner, John Sampson, witness the execution of a killer they helped convict. Hours later, they are called to the scene of a copycat crime. A note signed … scene of a copycat crime. A note signed “M” rests on the corpse. “You messed up big time, Dr. Cross.”
Was an innocent man just put to death? Alex soon realizes he may have much to answer for, as “M” lures the detective out of the capital to the sites of multiple homicides, all marked with distressingly familiar details — details that conjure up decades-old cases. Details that conjure up Cross family secrets. Details that make clear that M is after a prize so dear that — were the killer to attain it — Alex’s heart would no longer have reason to beat.
Another great installment to the Alex Cross series. This time Alex is being haunting by a killer that has been harassing him off and on for years. The kills look remarkably similar to the work of other killers even going so far as framing some of them. Makes for fast paced mystery as it all plays out. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Another great installment in the Alex Cross series!
You will be turning the pages quickly on this one! Again – Alex Cross and John Sampson are great! I would love to see more movies made about Alex Cross!! Anyway, this one is another hit! You will not be able to put it down! You will be scratching your head wondering what is going on!!
Alex Cross is one of my favorite characters. If you like mysteries these are for you.
I loved this book’s storyline. This book’s storyline was gruesome. I loved the action in this story. I loved the suspense in this story. I loved Alex’s bravery. I loved the family scenes. I loved the ending. Awesome job Mr. Patterson I can’t wait to read the next one.
Love the characters
I love Alex Cross. This is James Patterson’s best series in my opinion! Always good if Alex Cross is in it…..
I follow this author, and find his books are always good reads.
I love each Detective Alex Cross books and especially love how Patterson weaves old characters in and out of the book. While not his best work it is a good read to keep you entertained
Love the characters in the Alex Cross series. I’ve read them all and have most of the series in hardback. If you’ve never read these, please do. James Patterson never ceases to provide his readers with great books. He’s an amazing writer!
Alex Cross is back in another exciting thriller. In this one, Alex watches a man put to death for murders committed long ago. He continues his claim of innocence to the bitter end. But, when additional murders happen just like those committed by Mikey Edgerton, Alex starts to wonder if they convicted the right man.
As more and more discoveries are made, Alex knows that he is being chased by a mastermind, called M. He begins to wonder if his old friend, Kyle Craig, has come back from the dead.
This is an intriguing thriller, with Alex reviewing old cases to see what he may have missed, to provide him clues and insights into what is happening now.
Nana Mama, Bree, Jannie, Ali, Damon, and John Sampson all make appearances in this book, as does Ned Mahoney. Alex’s family and friends are always front and center for Alex as he battles the demons of crime.

Awesome book
James Patterson never disappoints…I thought I figured the mystery out but man did he leave an awesome cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next book in this long series. Sure kept me guessing who is “M”.
Wonderful book
I think this was one of the best Alex Cross books. Have enjoyed reading the whole series but this one stood out to me.
Love Alex Cross and how James Patterson always brings him alive to me…
Another great Alex Cross book!
Not as good as the other Cross books. Still a good read.
“M” is on a murdering rampage. He is pitting his skills against Alex Cross’s investigative skills. With the body count mounting, can Cross find and then catch “M” before Cross loses family members? Keep the Dramamine close. The twists and turns will take you for quite a ride.
I have generally stopped buying James Patterson books, because they are getting very repetitious, and also because he’s got writers publishing under his name, some of whom are quite bad at their craft. This recent iteration of the Alex Cross series was better than some recent efforts (thus the 4) and available at a bargain price. Pros: quick moving, with twists and turns, did not have it figured out (and ultimately there was really no way to do so). Cons: unrealistic, no real depth of characters, and never-ending conflict — Patterson can not let Cross take this foe out of commission for good. All-in-all it was a decent read, but it’s kind of annoying that we know “M” will be back again, and maybe even again. For the world’s greatest detective, he’s not when he cannot catch his man.
