One of the things I love about M. A. Comley’s books is it’s easy to see them as ‘true crime’. Although I may want to bury my head in the sand and pretend these things don’t happen, I know in reality they do.
I found Criminal Actions very thought provoking. What would I have done in Jacinda’s and Fiona’s place? Would I have simply done nothing to survive? Would I have fought back? With criminals so heinous as these two, who will do anything to satisfy their savage needs, there truly appears to be no way out.
I’ve also become very fond of DI Hero Nelson and his family. The snippets of insight into his life are always enjoyable. Although a super DI, he is also a true family man. Making him an indepth character and again adding a touch of reality to fiction.
It’s difficult to say more without spoilers but I would highly recommend this to crime thriller lovers. Five stars from me!
Criminal Actions by M.A. Comley
Hero Series #5
Deeply disturbing dark and twisted story of an evil couple remorselessly carrying out fiendish deeds on women hired to be the nanny of their young children. What the young women endured was horrific and made for chilling reading.
What I liked:
* DI Hero Nelson – a “normal” man solveing heinous crimes. He was also a wonderful husband, father and team leader at work.
* Hero’s family – also normal and real and great to come home to after a grueling day at work
* Hero’s police team – didn’t see much of them but liked their camaraderie and the way they worked together to solve the case
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* The flow of the book and writing style that was tight and succinct
* That I could relate to the characters
What I did not like:
* What the young women endured while working as nannies
* The criminal couple and their lack of compassion, remorse and humanity and that they got away with what they did for so long
* The helplessness that the women must have felt
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, though enjoy is probably not the best word to use…it was a compelling read
Would I read more by this author? Definitely
Thank you to the author and BOTBS for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
Jacinda followed her boyfriend from Scotland and winds up working as a nanny for 2 young children.
Two years later, the family has disappeared. There is a body in the backyard on fire on the grill. Neighbors call firefighters, they in turn call the police. They’ve spotted a human bone on the grill.
Di Nelson and his partner are called in to investigate. When they get inside the house, all is empty. The basement is splattered with blood.
This will be the most perplexing and horrifying case Nelson has ever run into, especially when he comes across other cases that greatly resemble this one.
Where is the family? Who do the burned body parts belong to? What the hell happened in this house behind closed doors?
Although 5th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. As with the others, this is well written with stand-out characters. The opening page grabbed me by the throat and never turned loose.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
