Mature Audience AdvisoryBrothers are supposed to be kind… caring… supportive… protective. Catherine Walman’s brother, however, is not. He has maligned her reputation until no honorable man will seek her company, wasted her dowry and endangered her home with his gambling and now his new wife has made it clear Catherine is no longer welcome. The hand of fortune intervenes when a letter … fortune intervenes when a letter arrives advising Catherine that a stranger has bequeathed to her “a home and money to keep it.” Catherine seizes upon this chance, hoping that it might be enough for her to be independent, to be free – only to discover this stranger also had a brother, or two, or three.

I really liked the story. I was surprised to see it only had 4 stars. It was well-written with lots of action and a complicated plot. I guess the romantic side wasn’t as overblown as in some romance books. The only complaint I had with that, well, I’m not going to spoil the story, but the characters acted more like today’s standards than Victorian.
Catherine has once again been betrayed by her brother Jame’s drinking and gambling. She doesn’t realize she has an audience as she confronts hime about stealing the money needed for them and their parents to pay their bill at the Lake Windermere inn as well as their journey home. Catherine is a sensible young woman while her brother is a wastrel, her mother suffers from vapors that incapacitate her, and a father that has lost touch with reality. All of the Lord Angelbsy and his wife learn when they send a magistrate, sir Phillip, to investigate her character. The two nobles are dying and have no heirs, so they hope Catherine, a complete stranger when they witnessed her brOther’s reprehensible behavior, is worthy and can inherit their estate rather thn see it revert to the crown. The story continues as Catherine eventually receives her inheritance along with an enormous set of difficulties. The author manages to combine romance with murder and suspense in this wonderful novel.
Very engaging characters on the good side and opposite foes they have to deal with.
Truth and love win in the end! Of Course!
Way too long for it to end like it did. Not much romance between the main characters. Lost interest about midway thru the book and had to force myself to keep reading. I did finish it though.
This was a very interesting book, complicated by very greedy people including Catherine’s brother who may have been an Heir but stole everything he could from his family. But a couple who saw Catherine handle her self very well with her brother in a crisis left her their entire estate. Catherine and her maid left in the middle of the night to discover a whole new world left for her by very generous people. Catherine is able to live the life she only dreamed about but not without lots of suspense, murders and mysteries and of course love, but is it for real or for what she now has.? Never a dull moment in Catherine’s life, but she is up for the challenge.
It is a happily ever after, I liked that, but too wordy, it repeated the same things over and over. Not very realistic, with the doctor and main H just grabbing her so much and kissing her hand over and over. It could have been 1/3 less and still get the story across, just the same. But not easy to guess who the baddy was until almost the end.
Not just your average Regency. The novel is very authentic in its feel. There are no out-of-time terms. The balance reminds me of Mary Jo Putney. There are not crowds of Dukes and Earls stomping about, wielding monancles to superior silver eyed countenances.
On the other, Scottish doctors with miracle cures consisting of charcoal biscuits seem authentic. A thoroughly pleasing romp. I’ll definitely be looking for other titles by this author.
Wonderful story of the bad guy getting his just reward, as well as dedicated, conscientious daughter getting hers. Quite and original and great read. Love it.
Kind of wordy in parts but good story line.
This is a great book, I couldn’t put it down. It’s romantic, mysterious and kept me guessing till the end.
Kept me guessiing.
I loved that the heroine is an original.
A book set in an interesting period of British history. A story of triumph over the discouragements of life.
The only problem was the formatting. Paragraphs ran together, sometimes in different font. That made the book a bit more difficult to read.
Actually this book had it all. A most entertaining read I highly recommend. You have a young lady doing her best to hold her family together and a brother doing his best to ruin them. What happens next is surprise after surprise.
I love the story very interesting but the book was poorly printed made it very hard to read
Original story which keeps the reader guessing .
MISLEADING TITLE
Loved reading this book – an unusual plot and surprising who-done-it. Romantic and with a sensible, strong yet romantic heroine surrounded by either idiots or the most selfish of people with the exception of a good man!
Crimes of the Brothers was unpredictable. I enjoyed the characters and the auther’s imagination. Greed is a powerful emotion.
The formatting of this book was was completely weird. There were half empty pages ending in the middle of a sentence, then completing on the next page. Paragraphs containing two characters’ spoken dialogue or part of a dialogue in one paragraph, then continued in the next. It made it hard to follow who was talking. In other places the whole paragraph would be
evenly indented for several
lines then back to the left margin where it belonged. These mistakes continued throughout the book.
I finished the book in spite of this because I was enjoying the story so much.
