From debut author Nina Varela comes the first book in a richly imagined epic fantasy duology about an impossible love between two girls—one human, one Made—whose romance could be the beginning of a revolution.Perfect for fans of Marie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse as well as Game of Thrones and Westworld. After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the … Westworld.
After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners’ estates and bent the human race to their will.
Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family’s death…by killing the sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier.
Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father’s legacy. But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn’t the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla.
Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war.

I loved this book. From page one to the last and I want more from book 2 as soon as possible. This was one of the best YA Fantasy novels i’ve had the pleasure to read in the last 5+ years. A truly amazing find. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
I kept hearing so many good things about this book, but I never got around to reading it. So when I ended up in Scribd-jail and this series was one of the few books in my ‘saved’-list still available, I decided to give it a go. I highly regret not checking out this book sooner! This story was so full of emotions, interesting characters and complicated boundaries between people high up and down low in the society. The way the romance was written was so gentle and precise, it was that I knew that there would be an f/f romance, because otherwise I would have been left guessing a bit (in a good way!). Nina Varela wrote this in a way that even though you could root for the love interests to become a couple, their relationship is a whole lot more complicated than just enemies-to-lovers and I really, really love that. I also love how Kim Mai Guest (the narrator) portrays the characters. The way Kim narratates really makes the characters come alive and I enjoyed every second listening. I have to wait until Iron Heart is available on Scribd to continue, but otherwise I would have dived right in.
To audiobook speedreaders: the narration is on the slow side, so I could listen to it on 1.8x (I usually do 1.2x or 1.5x) without it sounding robot-y or unnatural. And the speed brings the audiobook down to 7.2h from 13h!
The Crier’s war is a book that you will read long into the night and again the next morning once you wake up. Ayla and Crier are likeable, well-rounded characters that have wonderful chemistry that kept me glued to the page. I can’t wait to read the second installment and any further books Varela pens in the future.
Can’t wait for the next one!
It is a slow paced story but I enjoyed it very much
Robots and Humans, but Robots that are called Automae that are perfect versions of humans that are supposed to lack passion.
A love that is forbidden for many reasons. Love, hate, revenge and heartbreak. I feel the author did good with the world building and the story was easy to follow.
In the beginning it starts of slow but she’s taking her time in building up the story, shortly after the middle is where I got hooked and needed to know more. After that ending I am so happy to know that there will be a book 2!! I do plan on reading it when it comes out
Crier’s War is the first novel of Nina Verela. I have received this book in the October Owlcrate box. I really wasn’t disapointed. I really loved it.
The world is rule by Automae, humans that were made by an alchemist for a Queen who couldn’t bare children but really want a child. But after a war, Automae now rules over humans and see them as an inferior Kind.
Crier is an Automae, she was made to be flawless and beautiful and to follow the legacy of her father. But she discover he’s not the King she tought he was and admired. Crier also become betroyed to Scyre Kinok, but he as secrets and an agenda of is own.
Ayla, a human, as see her family and village murdured by Automae and want revenge on the king. She thinks that by destroying the think he loves most, his daughter, will do. But when she become her handmaiden and learn to know Crier and both of them seems to share a strange attraction.
And this book leaves us on a cliffhanger. Can wait for the sequel.
Crier’s War is a beautiful poem of a book. Fans of both fantasy and sci-fi: this book is for you.
