I loved these books! Watching these amateur sleuths trying to solve the crimes was fun even though they were looking for a killer. The stories kept me reading to see how they would successfully bring the bad guys to justice. The stories did not drag. They kept going with surprises thrown in. All of them had this underlying sense of humour, the dialogues were witty, the protagonists were people a reader could easily identify with. These books are the first in a series by an incredible author who has a knack for making murder mysteries amusing. While I enjoyed all of them, I liked the senior sleuths in The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives series the most.
Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker (Death by Cupcake Book 1)
Callie’s business partner, Anna, signed them up for pole dancing classes. Callie felt very uncomfortable about going because she was self-conscious about her weight because her boyfriend had just dumped her because he thought she was too heavy. Both Anna and Ben (a police detective who has been asking Callie out for a year) told her she wasn’t over-weight and was beautiful but she didn’t believe them.
The pole dancing instructor was so rude and obnoxious that Callie didn’t plan on returning after the first lesson. But when the instructor was found murdered and Callie was the prime suspect, she kept going in order to find the real killer. Callie was also a professor of German Literature at the nearby university but they threaten to fire her unless she could prove her innocence before the start of the semester in two weeks. So this put more pressure on her to find the killer fast, and without Ben’s help or he could lose his job. Even though he told her to leave the investigation to the police, there was no way Callie would do that.
Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem (The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives Book 1)
I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this fabulous book.
Oh my goodness! I couldn’t put this one down for a second. Izzy believed her Grandma was murdered but her death was declared a heart attack. Actually, Izzy was not a blood relation to Grandma at all. She ‘adopted’ Grandma who was her deceased husband’s grandmother. Grandma had many friends who all thought she had been murdered and told Izzy of their suspicions. Izzy started looking into the mysterious death along with her best friend, Jack, and the elderly ladies. They all wanted to help solve the crime.
As all this was going on, Izzy met Noel through a speed dating event. This happened because Jack thought she needed to get back into the dating pool. Noel is a detective and kept telling Izzy to let the police solve the crime. But Izzy cannot let it go. There is no stopping Grandma’s posse of friends who will not stop investigating until they find out who killed Grandma.
This is a wonderfully written mystery that I couldn’t put down. The book is a great read and definitely captures the reader in the storyline. I couldn’t imagine how a mystery could be funny but it sure can be. You have to read this book and see for yourself.
The characters were fantastic! First, we have Izzy who is kind of a klutz but is like a dog with a bone and won’t let go of something once she starts it. Her hunky, gay, best friend, Jack, always has her back. Then there is the posse of old ladies who believe themselves to be detectives and are sooooo funny. I love them and how they try to help solve the crime. A laugh out loud moment for me was when they were referred to as the Ben-gay brigade.
I loved this book! It was hilarious and had me chuckling constantly.
Finders, Not Keepers (The Not So Reluctant Detectives, #1)
Terri is such a good person. When she found a diamond necklace, she was determined to get it back to the owners. How many people would do that? When she found out the owner had been murdered and her heirs didn’t want the necklace, she was in a tough spot. What should she do with it? It was decided that the necklace would be donated to a charity – one that meant something to the original owner. Somehow Terri was left to find the charity. But when she started asking around about the murdered woman, hoping to figure out what charity was important to her, Terri didn’t realize she was putting herself in danger.
This cozy mystery had quite a variety of characters. They were either kind to a fault, over-the-top excited, scary and intimidating or bossy to the extreme. Terri was a helpful person, as librarians tend to be. As a librarian she knew how to find information and research things – the old fashioned way, not with Google. Quite unique today. Her best friend couldn’t have been more different. Melanie was loud, easily excited and very outgoing. The opposite of Terri who was laid-back and thought things out. Ryder, AKA “Hot neighbour dude” kept them in line. He was a P.I. and was able to get information on the murder for Terri. Just getting divorced, Terri was surprised when Ryder asked her out. He was a likeable man but way too alpha male and bossy for my taste.
I liked Melanie and her determination to solve Jessica’s murder. But Terri had promised Ryder she wouldn’t get involved in investigating it so she was trying to get Melanie to back-off. She wasn’t successful. This story kept me wondering what was going to happen to Terri and the necklace. Even with some tense times, this suspense had a few laugh-out-loud moments, too.
You’ve got to read this book if you like cozies with amateur sleuths, romance and a few chuckles.
