MATTHEW AND WILMA Mason, a married couple from San Francisco on a driving tour of southwest national parks, are found shot to death in the remote and rugged backcountry of southeast Utah. A revolver clutched in Matthew’s hand suggests a murder-suicide, but Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera thinks otherwise. In his mind, there are too many unanswered questions. Why had the Masons, at age 68, detoured … from the planned vacation route shown on their map? Why had they left the comfort of paved roads for rough, gravel back roads that led to nowhere in particular? Why had they driven to the place where they were found, next to an abandoned grass airstrip? And most peculiar of all, why were they dressed like hippies from the 1960s?

Love these books – love Manny. Thanks for the enjoyment!
Compelling story lines in an unusual setting!
A good mystery story
Great whodunit. I am definitely looking forward to reading more in this series.
Started slow, but wound up being quite unpredictable. Surprise ending turned what started as a mediocre book into one well worth your time.
Always interesting. Always keeps me guessing. No foul language or sexual situations. (Which I appreciate.)
I really like this series. Tony Hillerman would have encouraged this author.
Fun to read and appreciate the author using clean language
A page turner with a surprising ending. Very good.
Good “clean” reading. No gory murder scenes or steamy love scenes.
My only issue with the content is that the author used ‘Minivan’ associated with a VW Bus. The VW Microbus was never classified as a ‘Minivan.’ For those of use who owned this classic vehicle it would be identified as a VW Bus and nothing else.
Author develops believable characters
The only writer I have found who is a worthy successor to Tony Hillerman.
So well written – love reading these characters and about the high desert and the unique individuals that live there
I’ve enjoyed every book in the series about Manny Rivera. The landscape, culture and characters are so finely drawn that you feel part of it and each book just gets better. I recommend the whole series, each is a stand-alone, no cliffhangers, but the characters lives evolve from Book 1. I eagerly await more.
Couldn’t put it down! If you want a great read that keeps you guessing , this is it.
A methodical investigative detective dealing with what are to him are several unfamiliar culture/time frames. I would read more of this author.
This is my third book on Manny Rivera and they have all been great. I spent many a night reading just one more page, instead of sleeping. The characters are real and all blend well together. I am looking forward to the next book on Manny Rivera and whatever case he solves.
Entertaining detective story of the west and the Flower Power era.
