The car fire didn’t kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del, and confounded by the prime suspect’s refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial.Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this … this outrage than what appears on the surface, as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune. But the hungry and mythical trickster Coyote is waiting, as always, in the shadows to add a strange and deadly new twist.

Made me love the Southwest even more than ever. Love the culture, descriptions and ..well everything about the entire series!
A classic Hillerman. As always, a good story with his likable characters.
You can’t go wrong with Tony Hillerman. All of his books are page turners. I can usually figure out the ending long before a book is finished, but his books keep me guessing all the way through.
This book really highlights the culture of the Navajo people, which I found fascinating. I hope it is accurate, even though this is a work of fiction.
Very intriging, not easy to put down. A modern times western.
I enjoyed it from the first to the last page.
Great story with and the background is enlightening about the Navajo life.
Great characters. Well defined plot. High interest level throughout book. Excellent start to a series. I’m committed!
Hillerman takes his reader on an adventure. As the plot unfolds with interesting characters, the reader not only follows a mystery but learns elements of Navajo philosophy and myth during the experience. Hillerman will become a favorite.
I love Tony Hillerman’s books. This one does not disappoint!
I am a fan of all of Hillermans Navajo novels and this is a good one of the set.
Hillerman is the best (Tony, that is; his daughter’s sequels are much less good)
Hillerman is a fav, I’ll read anything with his name on the cover and know I’ll have hard time putting it down
Worth reading again.
Especially enjoyed descriptions of the setting.
I enjoy Hillerman because he teaches about the Navajo while still being a good story.
Easy read.
