Another great read in Lexi Post’s Poker Flat series with wonderful characters and an engaging storyline.
This book takes place away from the resort but we do get to see Hunter and Adriana make an appearance. This story centers on Rachel and Vince, both friends of Hunter’s for a long time – Rachel since childhood and Vince goes back to his police academy days, and when she finds herself in a really big jam that can have huge consequences not only for herself, but for her sister, her staff, and their livelihood she turns to Hunter for help and he pulls in his old academy buddy who is a whiz at numbers to find answers and hopefully save everything Rachel holds dear.
Rachel has not had it easy. With both her parents gone at a young age, she found herself solely responsible for herself, her sister, and their family ranch; which was their livelihood. Then enter Vince, whom she fell in love with but the nature of his work, being an undercover cop, was more than she could handle. She just could not add any more to her plate. She already had her hands full with her sister and her issues and running the ranch and she could not handle the added burden of her constant worry for Vince on the job, being gone for a long stretch of time with no contact so she ended their relationship. Though she buried her feelings deep to move forward with her life, she has never forgotten him or their time together, and when he turns up as the help to help save her and her ranch all those buried feelings come rushing back to the surface. Maybe total honesty this time around will have better results for her with Vince and give them both a second chance to move forward, if he can solve her mystery and help keep her out of danger.
When Hunter calls Vince for a favor to help a friend, he had no idea that the friend in need would end up being Rachel, his previous girlfriend and love of his life. She was the good to counter all the bad that he had to deal with being a cop and while he was undercover but she left with a forced excuse and broke off all contact. Now seeing her again after all these years forces old feelings back to the surface and he is determined this time around to get the true answers to why she ended their relationship and hopefully rekindle the flame. The spark is still there and regardless of the outcome of their personal lives, he will do whatever he can to help professionally to find the answers she needs to save her ranch. However, just as he is making progress on both fronts, what he finds shocks and angers him on behalf of Rachel. He has no clue how to reveal his news without causing a lot of pain to her, the ranch, and possibly damaging their second chance.
Cowboy’s Break was a fun, entertaining second chance romance with a lot of suspense, sexual tension, and mystery thrown in. I enjoyed the different twists and turns the investigation took and how Rachel and Vince both worked together to solve her problems and fix their relationship. I also liked seeing Hunter and Adriana make an appearance tying this story into the series. And I really enjoyed the ending and how everything worked out.
Rachel Henderson’s ranch is in trouble. Money’s missing from the ranch’s accounts. She has turned to her long-time family friend, Hunter McKade, for help. He knows someone who is just what Rachel needs, in more ways than she realizes. Vince Gallagher loved Rachel once, before she broke his heart, but he’ll do anything he can to help her, even if he has to guard his heart to do it.
This is an entertaining romance with a twist of suspense, some drama and steamy passion. Rachel’s uncertain how she feels about Vince being back in her life, but she knows if anyone can help her, he can. Vince still feels strongly about Rachel, and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, while keeping his heart from getting broken again. The characters are engaging, and you’ll recognize familiar ones from the Poker Flat series. This is a very enjoyable romance and well worth the read.
I read the Kindle Worlds edition of this story and changed the H’s name from Vance to Vince to accommodate the change in the current edition.
“I can be whatever kind of man you need me to be if…” He paused, noticing the sudden intake of breath through her lips. He reached around her and snagged another cookie. “I can have another.”
Rachel Henderson has always put her family’s ranch and needs before her own. Struggling with the death of her parents and her sister’s drug addiction, she ends a relationship with the love of her life, Vince Gallagher.
Seven years have passed since Rachel Henderson broke his heart. When Vince finds out she needs help with finding out who is stealing funds from her ranch, he is determined to use his past police detective skills to find the thief, as well as discover the truth as to why Rachel ended their love affair.
They say if you love something set it free…Will the time apart keep the wedge between Rachel and Vince, or will their souls recognize that they are two halves of the same whole.
Lexi Post has built a fast paced romantic mystery within a few short pages! Highly recommend this novella!
