Cowboy’s Best Shot is book three in Lexi Post’s Poker Flat series and centers on Adriana, the bartender at the resort, and Hunter, who works in security on the property. I have to say I am really intrigued by this series and I think it is awesome that Post’s creative mind put together this series based on a short story published in the 1800’s and spun it into a fun story with an exciting atmosphere and charming characters, giving this band of misfits a second chance and a place to call home.
Adriana Perez is a former prostitute turned bartender at the resort. She is not ashamed of her old life, still enjoys sex – anything and everything – and being at the nudist resort as well as her position in hospitality affords her opportunities to indulge in what she loves when invited. She has gotten into a few sticky situations but has always come out unscathed; until one night at the resort takes a wrong turn and has her questioning some of her previous choices and brings the sexy, silent security guard rushing to the rescue. Then to make matters worse, someone is working really hard to get her fired. As things start to happen and evidence stacks against her she has to rethink her entire lifestyle and face the possibility of leaving and starting over yet again. Yet with Hunter’s help investigating the accusations against her, she may find more than exoneration at the end.
Hunter McKade, former military, and law enforcement now works security at the Poker Flat resort. He is not big on people or conversations and enjoys his solitude which is one reason he took the job at the nudist resort. He can keep to himself, blend in with the shadows, and enforce his ingrained need to protect. He is friendly enough, yet distant with the staff but when it comes to Adriana; she stirs something deep that he fights to ignore. She exudes sex in every aspect of her being and does her best to tease him and push his buttons. He has demons of his own he has yet to put to rest but little by little she starts breaking down his walls and he cannot ignore his need to help and protect her. Though a few complications arise when they get involved he is determined to keep her at the resort and make sure she knows she belongs to him.
There was definitely a lot of sexual tension and push-pull when it came to these two characters. I really liked Hunter and the way he handled not only Adriana but finally dealing with his past and moving forward. Adriana, I was a little on the fence about. From her background I understood why she acted the way she did, but I wish she would have been a little more real in some instances with her feelings and reactions instead of turning everything lighthearted and making jokes. But I did enjoy the balance these two characters gave each other, they made a good couple in the end and I was glad to see them work through their issues and find their HEA.
