Nicole Helm reminds me of a young Nora Roberts. Her characters are complex, her plots are compelling, and her stories draw me in and stay with me long after I’ve finished the book. I never pass up a Helm novel and Cowboy SEAL Homecoming is one of my favorites in the Navy SEAL Cowboys…but don’t just read one. Read the entire series!
Alex was amazed Jack he only had a somewhat recollectiong of his sister Becca. Alex realized that his father trust Becca enough to leave her half of the ranch. Two of his friends had come home with him Alex knew she was going to start a non profit. She basically told him she has been here alone and was used to it she was not a Chatty Cathy. She couldn’t believe she told Alex she didn’t want him there. She believe in what they wanted to do with the ranch. She had them stay in the house until they built the bunk house. Becca was pissed off she didn’t want these men in
the house. Even though it was half owned by her step brother Alex. Becca was interested in Alex but she would not show it. Finally Alex and Becca get together but, then he starts having more nightmares and he refused to spend the night sleeping with her.. Alex was having a real bad time and really didn’t want to see the therapist. Becca told Alex she loved him but, she knew he couldn’t love her back the way she wanted. Will. Alex and Becca try to have a real relationship
Starting Over
Alex was coming home and bringing to of his friend’s with him to start a therapeutic horse facility with the Becca. They owned his family ranch equally. They hadn’t been around much when he mom & his dad were married. But each have a lot to get over.
Real life experience reading with a twist of true love.
Cowboy SEAL Homecoming is set on a horse and cattle ranch in a small town in Big Sky Country – Montana. Three wounded Navy SEALs have returned to the ranch with our hero to start an equine therapy center for wounded veterans, but must heal themselves in the process.
Rebecca Denton is an extremely sheltered young woman who was left half of the ranch by her recently deceased stepfather. After having meningitis as a child, Rebecca was coddled and sheltered by her smother, who still treats Becca as if she is naive and incapable of caring for herself and knowing her own mind. As a result, Becca has made friends on the farm and has a wide array of furry companions like Ron Swanson (the goat) and Rasputin (the rooster), among others. Becca talks to the animals as if they were people, which gives you some insight into her life and loneliness. Deciding to open an equine therapy ranch for wounded veterans with her stepbrother and his comrades is a huge step for Becca, but one at which she is determined to succeed (and have her way). I liked watching Becca come out of her shell and start to stand up for herself, her wants and needs. She didn’t back down from the military men, and she earned their respect in the process.
Alex Maguire is the prodigal son returned. The ranch seems to hold difficult memories for Alex, dating back to the death of his mother and the feelings of helplessness that ensued. Returning home after the death of his father, wounded and in denial, Alex will be forced to face that he can’t control every situation. He was stoic and broody, and suffering the after effects of war-time tragedies. My heart went out to Alex and I hated his nightmares and dissociative states. I wish that more of the book was spent on Alex getting help, but I suspect future books in the series will focus more on that area.
Alex and Becca are step-siblings, but they did not grow up together and barely had a relationship. So the romance between the two didn’t raise that ick factor that I have garnered from other step-romances. Becca’s level of sheltering was a bit of a shocker, as I can’t imagine someone today being in their 20s without being kissed or seeing a shirtless man. However, Alex’s worldliness balanced out Becca’s sheltering and they moved along at a believable pace for the duration of the story. This was not a steamy romance, but I don’t think any higher level of heat would have been believable.
Unfortunately this book got lost in the narration for me. The narrator had a hard time holding my interest, and I didn’t feel that her voice matched the story. The performance lacked enough depth to differentiate the characters, which made everyone sound the same. When you have military tough guys in your story, you want to be able to hear their voice independently of the female characters.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this audiobook that I received from the publisher, Tantor Audio.
Cowboy SEAL Homecoming is a sweet and adorable romance.
I picked this one up; because of a teaser Anna @ Herding Cats & Burning Soup shared. It’s the first night/morning the guys are at the ranch and that morning a goat gets in the house. That scene was so funny. I had to just smile and laugh. It reminded me of farm life. I didn’t have any goats, but I sure did have several other farm animals. Their was also another goat scene that made me smile as well. Goats, they are just too funny!
Becca reminded me a lot of myself. She has been sheltered her whole life; because she was a very sick child and her mother worried, so as a result she’s made animal friends on the farm. I wasn’t sheltered, but I didn’t have many friends and preferred to spend my time outside with my animals then with people. I had a great time watching Becca come out of her shell and stand up for herself and her needs and wants. I like that she wants to open an equine therapy ranch for wounded veterans and her stepbrother is all in to help, now that he is out of the service.
Alex returns home after pretty much running away from home. The ranch and town hold difficult memories for him. Coming home he is forced to face his situation and all those memories in the past. My heart went out to him. I would have liked to see more time spent on Alex getting help and dealing with his issues.
Becca and Alex are step-siblings, but they didn’t grow up together and barely have any type of a relationship, so the romance; between them didn’t raise any issues that I usually would have with this type of set up. Their romance isn’t steamy, it’s a slow and sweet build. I think anything more wouldn’t have been believable; especially with how sheltered Becca was and the issues Alex has.
I had a delightful time with a Cowboy SEAL Homecoming. It had some wonderful touching moments and showcased life’s struggles and overcoming them.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was a good book. There were some slow spots but nothing major. The copy I was given had some major editing issues in regards to the format for a conversation. There were times when I didn’t know who was speaking (especially if there were more than two characters in the scene.) With that being said, the plot was wonderful. It is so true that more needs to be done for our returning warriors. The issues that they and their loved ones face is a major one. I am glad to have read this story. It was worth it as it was touching.
One ranch. Two people. One goal.
Cowboy Seal Homecoming has WINNER written all over it. An act of bravery brings a group of seals full circle and with a little help from a friend inspires a common goal. Ms. Helm teaches a valuable lesson about what courage really means. Bravery does not mean lack of fear, but the strength to take a risk. In fact courage is a lot like faith. Alex and Becca have a history that borders on taboo. Despite the time, distance and heartache that may be headed their way, they bring out the best in each other. She sees the man he really is and he sees the woman she hopes to be.
When the job he has put years of life into suddenly turns it’s back on him and his two buddies, Alex is left a little dumbfounded, and completely lost, he goes from having a job that he loves to nothing, and it’s heartbreaking to say the least. So he does the only thing he can think of, and decides to go home, and face the place that he never thought he would return to, in hopes of finding some stability and answers. The whole experience is a little overwhelming for him, for so long he has been a soldier, he hasn’t got the slightest idea how to be a civilian, how to find his place in the world again… but he is determined to try. Once he arrives back at the family ranch, he gets a little surprise when he finds that he now shares ownership of it with Becca, a daughter of one of his father’s wives, and he isn’t quite sure how to handle her either. But little by little him and Becca begin to find common ground, both have pasts that need dealt with and both of them think the ranch could be best used to help others in similar situations. They want to make it a place for soldiers to come to and relearn how to be a member of society, to help them find their place in the world again, while also helping them deal with all of their lingering demons. It all sounds good on paper, now the real work comes when trying to make it a reality…
In Cowboy SEAL Homecoming you will meet some really amazing characters with hearts of gold, and be treated to one heck of a heartwarming story line…. I loved this one!! This touching read will reach into the recesses of your heart and leave it permanently touch, and give you a glimpse into the lives of people who are fighting hard to find their way back to a normal healthy life. I have to say it was an eye-opening read, sometimes you take the simplest things for granted and witnessing all that these soldiers had to endure returning home made me a little more appreciative of all that we have, because of their bravery. I am excited to see what Ms. Helms has in store for these amazing characters next, and I cannot wait to get a up close and personal view of Gabe and Jack! Highly recommend this one, but be sure to have your tissues ready, cause it bound to give you the feels and have you shedding a few tears!!

Cowboy SEAL Homecoming by Nicole Helm
Navy SEAL Cowboys #1
Great premise for a new series – looking forward to reading more romances with SEALs in Montana 😉
Alex and two of his team head home after medical discharges from the Navy. Gabe, Jack and Alex all have issues related to their last mission going FUBAR when a grenade attack put paid to their military careers. Alex and his stepsister Becca have decided to use the property they inherited jointly to create a therapeutic ranch with horses and cattle to assist military veterans get back on their feet when they return stateside. The setting is perfect. The characters are well fleshed out and the potential for the series is great with Gabe and Jack and perhaps others who arrive at the ranch to provide fodder for romances of their own. In this book, though, Alex and Becca find that there is chemistry aplenty between them and potential for a future together. Well…if strong silent everything is fine Alex wises up to the fact things are not actually fine and that he might need a bit of help moving forward with his life AND Becca can come into her own and become more assertive in stating what she wants then acting on it.
I enjoyed the camaraderie between Alex, Gabe and Jack. I loved the dynamics between Jack and Becca and the fact that Becca was unwilling to “put up with” what she was unhappy with. I am looking forward to hearing more about Gabe and Jack and finding out which one of them will end up with therapist Monica Finley…and who the other one will end up with, too.
There are a lot of issues covered in this book including childhood illness, overprotective parents, assertiveness, PTSD, communication, role of counseling…and other things. All issues were handled well and the book made me care, smile and wonder what will happen next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebook Casablanca for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4. 5 Stars
This is the first book that I have read from this author and the begining of a new series. The series will center on 3 ex-Navy SEALS, who were the lone survivors of an attack in Afghanistan, injured when a grenade was thrown into their vehicle. While the three of them were in a rehab center, their leader, Alex Maguire, received news that his father, Burt, had suddenly died from a stroke. All three men, no longer able to go back to the SEALS because of their injuries, must now find a new purpose to their lives. Alex’s new purpose is to help his men and others like them.
Alex’s mother had been killed by a drunk driver when he was only 8, but he had been in the back seat and survived. His father had remarried, which left him very uncomfortable at home, so he had enlisted after high school and had avoided coming home over the years. His father had left the family ranch, in Montana to both him and his step sister, Becca Denton, who had wanted to start a therapeutic horsemanship as an adjunct to the ranch before Burt died. Now she offers Alex a way to combine their two dreams.
But Becca has her own issues. She was raised by a single mother, until she married Burt and had been very ill as a child. Her mother sheltered her too much, so she was home schooled, and never had any friends except the animals on the ranch. She is very shy and unsure around other people and now has these three Seals sharing the ranch house, until they can make habitable the bunkhouse.
Both of these two people have issues from their past. Becca believes in living one day at a time, while Alex needs control, to keep everyone safe and plan out everything. The chemistry between these two, is explosive, but can they trust each other enough to open up? How do the other two men, Gabe and Jack add to the dynamics? None of them are open to therapy, but all are suffering from PTSD and they all need it. Alex, Gabe and Jack believe the men they want to help only need work and a purpose, but Becca knows that to be healed they will need therapy too.
I read an advanced copy from netgalley.com. I thought this was a beautifully written story, with engaging characters, an authentic scenario and conflict and the resolution real. I recommend this book.
