“A heartwarming story about faith and starting over.” -Kirkus Reviews When a shy woman inherits a ranch, she’ll have to find an inner strength to succeed–and open herself up to love–in this heartwarming novel from New York Times bestselling author Victoria James. Sarah Turner has led a very sheltered life. So when her parents pass away tragically, suddenly she’s left in charge of the family … suddenly she’s left in charge of the family ranch with little know-how but plenty of will to keep it afloat. Determined not to lose her parents’ legacy or her newfound independence, she needs a hero fast–not to save her, but to show her how to save herself. But she’s unprepared for the ruggedly handsome cowboy who answers her ad.
“Cowboy for Hire,” the ad said, and Cade Walker is quick to respond. Betrayed as ranch manager by his former boss, he’s looking for a new place to put down roots–without the pressure to prove himself again. Except when he meets his new boss, it’s clear he’s not only there to run a ranch but to also teach Miss Independent how to run it. But as they struggle to make the ranch flourish, they’ll both need courage if they hope to find a family…together.

I liked this story it was super cute, emotional and a fun read. I liked Sarah my heart broke for her and everything she faced, but she was a fighter and nothing was going to hold her back from getting what she wants. Oh my goodness Cade I think I have a dislike/love relationship with him in this story. Sometimes I wanted to smack him and then sometimes my heart broke for him, I think in this story you will find two heroes not just one. I also really enjoyed the other characters in the book they are all a fun group of friends and the author made you feel like you were right there hanging out. I can’t wait to see what adventure the author takes Dean and Hope one, or at least that’s what I hope the author is going for next. :-). Overall this was a fun read. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to post a review and have given my honest opinion
u202aFor the past 15 years Sarah has lead a restricted life with parents who struggled to function normally. Now she wants to learn how to run the ranch that is her legacy and break free from the constraints previously placed upon her. She hires Cade as both her new foreman and instructor, not knowing (or caring) that his early life was one of poverty and strife. Being in constant daily contact they soon develop feelings for one another but Cade’s insecurity as to his worth may torpedo any relationship between them. An enjoyable, clean romance but a bit overlong for my liking.u202c
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Tender, sweet, clean romance
Sarah is ready to come out of her sheltered life by learning to run her ranch and taking on the world. For the first, she sets out to hire a ranch manager. A cute mix-up with her ad copy sends a lot of the wrong kind of cowboys to her door, but finally a qualified foreman shows up with all the right credentials. Sarah has a lot to learn, and even more to overcome, but her determination and sense of humor were delightful to see and demonstrated a resiliency that few suspected she had.
Cade is looking to make his own way in the world after learning the ropes on the ranch owned by his best friend, whose family stepped up and gave him a home when he had no where else to go. Cade believes that he has nothing to offer to anyone, but he’ll work harder than everyone to earn his place at the table.
This is a slow-burn romance with plenty of tension and even more emotional complications. Both Cade’s and Sarah’s back stories will break your heart and have you rooting for them from the start. The HEA was sweet and satisfying, even if a tad bit predictable. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
A sweet romance. Kade has felt unwanted his entire life. Sarah had lived a life of great tragedy. Two hurting and broken people find their way to each other. It takes opening up and the interference of friends to show them how right they can be for each. It’s a story of trusting in your self worth and coming out better on the other side.
What starts as witty, intriguing “Cowboy Romance.” Instead, quickly became not so much of the above, leaving me dangling in the middle how much I wanted to see how Cade and Sarah’s road to various victories would end.
Don’t get me wrong, the writing itself is excellent, as another reviewer mentions, the characters are strong, likable with a real feel to them. Along with the outline of the story itself- it drew me into it all-
So, with all that goodness- I missed the drama! Not the overtop, woe is me’ drama, the hard to resolve conflicts fiction/reality throws at couples in these ranch hand situations!
There were SOME passive-aggressive situations, some that I’m still confused about, and some… well, let’s just say, I had hoped for more from the budding Ranch owner and her hire!
Regardless, I am glad I read to the end. There’s chemistry going on between the circling couple, answers galore, and a hint of what might be next from this unique bunch of characters!
My familiarity with Victoria James’ work is minimal, so while I nitpicked a couple of things. Overall, it was an easy, fun, passionate, standalone Cowboy romance! I would pick up another book from this author!
“A copy of this book was provided by Entangled via NetGalley with no requirements for a review.”
Cowboy For Hire by Victoria James a four-star read that will keep you riding. This is number two in the Wishing River series and I haven’t read number one and didn’t feel like I missed anything, but I do plan on going back to read it, as this was a good story, its juts lacked in a couple of places. I don’t want to say anything about the story as Sarah and Cade have a story that you need to come at with fresh eyes, they each have something that will push you, but it will also keep you reading. I will be looking for more from this author as this was a sweet and romantic story that made me think.

My review :
When two people have to let the past go to make half the journey to one another …
When I have finished a very consuming read, I sometimes need something more easy and this one book looking like to be the right answer for today.
This is the classical girl meets guy, they are from a different background with a very different upbringing, and other expectations in life.
She is afraid to live by fear of losing again while he is scared to love and never be enough.
Sarah’s life was shut down with her bother’s death, from there she lived suspended to others’ whims. She was put in a gilded cage for fifteen years, no friends, no school, only the closest kin. But now everyone has left, she is finally free to get a life for herself but it is not the easy thing when she feels like an intruder and a passive witness of the action which unfolds before her.
She is awkward among people but when in a small setting, she is able to voice her difficulties and doubts.
She just wants a chance to prove she can be more than the little girl who was held at bay for too long.
Cade had never one to count on, he was always the one providing the service, the help. When Sarah’s family was dysfunctional, his was destructive. He has no other role than helping or be discarded like trash why he felt this way, like never be enough.
I first thought he has quite retrograde ideas, like a good caveman, as if he could not bring more on the table than the woman he was not worth her time. When it was only his way to push back others of being rejected because he was of no use.
In all this 4.5 stars read is a cute clean romance with lovable characters, a bit of drama but no real angst as they are mature enough to see in time their flaws and failures do not make them unlovable.
I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Entangled, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

“Victoria James” writes cowboys that make you want to pack your bags and move to wishing river. The story itself was engaging and very easy to read and anyone who likes a story that’s set in a small town, features a red hot brooding cowboy and is full of family drama, sweetness and romantic moments, should certainly check it out. This is a keeper for the shelves, to read again! Thank you for a heartfelt and lovely story!! I can’t wait to see what Victoria James has in store for us readers in her next Cowboy book. Don’t miss out on this series and book. Happy reading everyone!
After reading the first book I was wanting Cade’s book, I had originally thought that Dean would come first, but I was wrong. In this book we meet Sarah Turner who was sheltered after a family tragedy. Now she is the only member in her family and needs to make the ranch successful. She ends up hiring Cade, who leaves the ranch he kind of grew up in, because he feels that his friend need to build his life with his new bride..Cade broke my heart his family were horrible people, and him helping Sarah get better acquainted with the world made me like all the more…Can’t wait for Dean’s story!!!!
rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I fell in love with Wishing River with the first book of the series, “The Trouble with Cowboys”. OMGosh, I couldn’t read the story fast enough. This story is no different. I devoured the pages and I didn’t want to stop reading. Ms. James has been a fantastic job of story-telling. She masterfully crafted a tale of two damaged souls coming together to overcome their past.
Sarah is a young lady who lost her brother when she was ten and her family was never the same again. The ranch was a place of hiding from the world. Cade is a young cowboy who has never received love. He had to prove his worthiness in order to not be discarded.
This story just totally grabbed me right from the beginning. There were moments that were hilariously funny and others that were poignantly heart-wrenching. This story is written in my favorite dual POV format. I can really connect to the characters so much more easily this way.
I was completely saddened to see the story come to an end. It is like saying good-bye to friends until the next book in the series comes out. Ms. James did a great job of included the first couple throughout the story along with the other two from their group. I looking forward to reconnecting with all of them again in the next story.
This is a really sweet, clean romance. I highly recommend this to anyone who love to see two people overcome past hurts and find love.
Cade and Sara are to broken individuals who come together for the good of keeping her family ranch running. Cade comes from a dysfunctional home and feels he has nothing to offer in terms of relationship material. Sara was a sheltered woman brought up with rigid rules. When her parents dies he is left with the ranch a newfound freedom. Hiring Cade was the first step in learning how to run a ranch but she gained a whole lot more. Can these two broken individuals find a common ground to build something into a happily ever after? I voluntarily agreed to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review.
**I received a copy of Cowboy for Hire from Entangled Publishing and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review.**
Cowboy for Hire by Victoria James is the second book in her Wishing River series. I do have to say that I liked the first book more but this addition did have its moments. There are two damaged souls, a overprotective housekeeper, Mrs. Casey, who tells it like it is and loves her glass of whiskey (This is my fav), a troubled past for both Sarah Turner and Cade Walker and of course the ad that ran for a “Cowboy for Hire who loves long walks…hmm you can imagine how many showed up for interviews but who put the ad in wasn’t really answered. But all in all I admired Sarah for standing her ground and being stubborn enough to prove to the hired hands and Cade that she could run the ranch.
Sarah Turner has to prove that she can run the ranch after the death of both her parents but first she has to find a new foreman. Little does she know that Cade Walker from a neighboring ranch is very interested in taking what he’s learned from the Donnelly ranch and be a foreman at the Turners. But first she has to learn how to fix fences, go on a cattle drive and also learn the hard truth of how bad the finances for the ranch are after her father’s death. But it’s turning out to be a lot harder than she thought.
Cade Walker is ready to become a foreman and ranch manager but he didn’t think he’d be teaching Sarah as well. She’ll surprise him with her determination to learn as well as know all aspects of running her families ranch. But when he starts finding discrepancies in the books he’ll have to break the news to her but when he learns the story behind the loss of her brother and parents he’ll understand her reason behind learning everything. When he starts to fall in love with her will they be able make it last?
This second story in the series, is worth your time.
The story centers around Sarah Turner and Cade Walker.
Sarah’s happy childhood changed when she was 10. Her brother’s life came to a tragic end and from that day on, her life was one of sadness, no love, sheltered and lonely. After the death of her parents, she is left to run the family ranch. Something she always wanted to do, but has no idea how to do. An ad brings Cade to her door.
Cade, whom we met in book one, is a complex man who believes he is not worthy of love. His childhood left him with feelings of worthlessness and certainly not good enough for Sarah.
As not only a working relationship but also a friendship develops, both of their lifes are enriched. As he sees Sarah blossom, Cade’s feeling intensify. But when Cade tries to protect her, Sarah felt betrayed and their fragile friendship shatters.
Will they be able to mend it? Will Cade realize that he is worthy of love and can be not only good enough but also he can mean everything to someone special? Will the trust be mended?
This thoughtful and at times heartbreaking story will touch your hearts. Aside from the plot it’s also a reminder that the experiences of our childhood, and family or lack thereof , will definitely affect the individuals as an adult.
I am looking forward to the next story in the series. Will it finally be Dean’s and Holly’s?
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley and Entangled Amara. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
After tragedy hits Sarah Turner struggles to find her way not only in her personal life, but also on the family ranch. Losing her parents leaves her at a loss on all fronts, she doesn’t have a clue how to run the ranch, but knows she better figure it out quick or she runs the risk of losing it. She desperately needs help!
Which leads her to place an ad for a ranch hand, and winds up getting far more than she bargained for when Cade Walker answers it.
With it’s delightful story line and charming characters Cowboy for Hire is certain to warm your heart! Upon meeting these two it was evident that they had chemistry, but with Sarah being innocent and shy, and Cade hesitant to get involved it took a bit for them to see what was in front of them. I enjoyed watching the progression of things between them, it had a natural feel, and their feelings for one another were quite palpable… it was a slow burn kind of romance. If you like sweet western romances then I have no doubt you will enjoy this one, the words are captivating and the characters will steal your heart upon first meeting. Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, via NetGalley request, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
