Freya Barker does it every time. Once again we get an amazing book. Love this story so much and couldn’t put the book down.
Joe is a widow whose wife passed away 18 months earlier and is the new Chief of Police in the quiet town of Durango where he just moved with his 2 sons.
Ollie is one of my favorite heroine by Freya to date. Strong and doesn’t let her disability stand in her way. Single mother to 17 year old Trinny, she always worked hard to give her daughter a good life.
This book was so good! Couldn’t put it down. Love the chemistry between Ollie and Joe. And Joe..swoon..he was so protective. At first I was afraid that 18 months would be too soon, but it worked out perfectly. The suspense and all the characters from On Call, Rock Point and also Cruz Livingston from Susan Stoker’s Badge of Honor series was awesome (so much protective Alpha men in one book, love it)
Love that Freya always writes characters that I can relate to.
I highly recommend if you love romance books with mature main characters, then you should definitely read Freya Barker’s books!
This book was fun and sexy. I loved the characters and the suspense. It was well written and I could not put it down until it was finished.

I’m a huge sucker for widowers in books and Joe easily wormed his way to the top of my list, even before his story began. I can’t begin to describe how excited I was that the new chief of police from Burning for Autumn, would get his own story.
Covering Ollie begins months after Joe Benedetti and his sons have moved to Durango. Being the chief in a small town is more of a political backslapping role; juggling budgets, attending official events, representing the community. With the help of Trinny, the teen from across the street who watches his boys after school, Joe excels at it all and they settle into a new norm.
Ollie Rizzo is a fiercely independent heroine, having worked hard to provide for her teen daughter. She has moved beyond the lemons life threw at her, and along with former neighbor Grace, built a life and family for Trinny.
When these two finally meet, you can see both the spark and struggle that these characters have with their growing relationship. Their story is seamlessly crafted; the circumstantial, emotional, and physical challenges presented are real. The suspenseful action demonstrates a fluidity that I’ve come to expect from Freya Barker, and she doesn’t disappoint.
This book is highly recommended for avid readers of romantic suspense. The characters are mature and their issues relatable. Ms. Barker’s On Call series is a wonderful addition to Susan Stoker’s Operation Alpha collection.
This story is about a landscape architect (Ollie) with a prosthetic leg and 17 year old daughter who is protected from the mafia by the police chief of the town (Joe). Attraction between Ollie and Joe deepens as the story progresses and there are some great sex scenes. The mob causes a LOT of trouble: shootings, stranglings, threats, car explosions, hostages, attacks of various kinds, kidnappings, just incredible dangers. Can Joe keep Ollie and her daughter safe through all this and can they have an HEA? I highly recommend this book!
