MAGIC IS DYING;CAN I SAVE IT?IF THE PRICE IS MY HAPPINESS;CAN I PAY IT?In the last few generations, only one in a hundred female witches are born with power. So when I came into mine, my grandmother helped me hide it so I wouldn’t be swept away by the ISC, our magical government. The price of discovery was steep; becoming an ISC drone and being paired with their choice of mate for my coven. So I … choice of mate for my coven. So I hid in plain sight working days at Maggie’s Pet Wash, and nights piecing together the mythical Words of Power.
The only thought that keeps me going is figuring out a way to beat the ISC and hopefully fall in love with a coven of my own… maybe even raise a few little witchlings.
So when my familiar, a pug named Mrs. Pig, screws up my one shot at obtaining the Words of Power, I figure everything is ruined. That is until Pierce, Sam, and their own talking dogs walk into my life. Now that I have them, can I give them up? Even to save magic?
The ISC is coming for me. What they don’t know is:
I’M COMING FOR THEM, TOO.

Covened is the debut novel of the author which follows the story of Maggie, a witch in hiding and some sort of spy/ rebel against their magical government, ISC. Although she never knew her father and abandoned at a very young age by her mother, she was taken care of and trained by her grandmother, Mama Jo. After her grandma’s demise, she turned her focus to finding out the mystery of the dwindling number of female witches and their disappearances. With a spell gone wrong, talking pugs and desperately trying to translate an old text, she will need all the help she can get from her covened mates and an old flame if she wants to see everything through. Will she have enough time to solve these things with the looming exposure from ISC and possibly a threat to her unsanctioned covening?
First off, I loved that in this book it featured a big sized girl. It isn’t everyday I read an FMC that features this kind. Major props to the author for putting this out there. The FMC’s character is quirky, funny with a bleeding heart for the unfortunates. I feel sad and angry for what happened with her long lost sister. The guys character were believable and for once, not the usual alpha male you read but there was never any doubt that they will fight for our heroine. The storyline and writing is spot on and entertaining. Who wouldn’t love a talking pug?
I will definitely keep on reading the series and curious to see what will happen next with that ending of book 1.
Oh Ann, what a wonderful story! A delightful adventure filled with sass, sarcasm, sex, magic and pugs Relatable character development, great world building and an overall engaging read. Looking forward to book 2…. please!
What can I say other than this first time author blew it out of the water? A witch in hiding, a few yummy men, and, lest we forget, talking dogs. I kinda want a Mrs. Pig of my own. Pug Life, people! Oh! Yeah! I almost didn’t mention the crooked governing witch council as the bad guys! This was just… everything one could hope for in a RH story. Funny, sexy, dirty (insert eyebrow waggle here), and just really well written. And that ending?!?! I did NOT see that coming…. So… Ann…. about book 2….
I really liked Maggie. She is quirky, funny, and I love her dos. I need a Mrs. Pig. In addition, she has a couple hot guys. She has been hiding that she is a witch, but suddenly finds herself covened (I.e. mated) and all sorts of new and dangerous things are happening. The story started a little slow, but picks up speed and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I’m looking forward to seeing where this series goes 🙂
Covened is the debut novel of Ann Swan. Her first novel reads like she has been writing for years. In Covened, our FMC is a quirky, normal sized, funny witch. Hiding her magic from those in power, she works to undermine them. By a turn of fate(or rather at the prodding of her goddess) her life changes and takes a path she never thought would be possible. With her covened mates and their quirky pets at her side, maybe her fate is rather different than the one she prepared for.
The world building was pretty cool. Pretty much our world, but with extra really cool stuff added on top. Things are well described but not overly wordy. The rules make sense and are pretty easy to follow.
The editing was well done. I didn’t notice any issues while reading through though I did not specifically look for them either. Still I didn’t have anything draw me out of the story. The continuity was well done. No errors with name changes, descriptions, powers, etc.
The characters were probably the best part. Maggie is our FMC and who we spend the most time with. She’s an average sized woman with some curves and she’s pretty funny. She’s not a superhero or karate guru. While she does have some skills, she’s also a bit clumsy and pretty normal. Kind of like your funny and cute friend. It makes her more relatable. Her guys, Pierce and Sam, are pretty different but both are great. I loved the dogs. The dialogue is normal sounding. No weird timing or word vomiting. Just dialogue that you could actually hear(if the world was full of magic).
The plot is fairly straightforward. There are a few twists and turns thrown in, but it’s not an overly complex plotline that’s going to need charts to keep up with. Now, that’s not saying this is a simple book for a three year old. It just means that you aren’t reading about four or five different plots all happening at once. Since we follow Maggie, we are seeing what her life and plans are. I have some hope that in book 2 my theory will come to be, but we shall have to see. The ending was a nice place to end the book. Obviously being that it’s a series, we end with some things still left up in the air, but enough things were resolved that you won’t feel cheated when it ends. No huge cliffhanger, just a nice break.
Overall, I would recommend this book. I am looking forward to book two!
A new take on magic that was really refreshing. It had love, laughs, cute pets, interesting characters, and a good storyline. I am excited to see how the next book in the series turns out.
This book made me laugh non stop from the beginning. I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes: dogs, magic, hotness, steaminess, good vs evil, and laughter. If you like those things this book is for you.
I loved reading this book so much! It was an amazing start to the series and the author has such an amazing writing style and writers voice. The characters were really brought to life and jumped right off the page. The characters get themselves into such hilarious situations and I found myself laughing a lot. Maggie is my favorite main character ever, she could do the most boring thing ever and I would happily gobble it up. Although, the familiars really stole the show. I always love reading about animals in books, but these ones could have their own series just on their own. they’re that lovable. I was so impressed with this first time authors ability to weave together an entire world with amazing characters and storyline. I am waiting on the edge of my seat for book 2!
Holy wow! Guys, I laugh snorted Dr Pepper TWICE from this book!!! Maggie is relatable and hilarious, and for debut novel, Ann’s going to take over the world with her puns, sexy men, and cute but sassy pants pugs. A must read!
Ann Swan’s debut book is a good showing. The overall concept of the book is intriguing, and who doesn’t love snarky talking animals. Pierce was by far my favorite character, and I’m interested to see where Swan leads this world next.
This is a delightful read with witchcraft, love, intrigue and pugs. Maggie is a sheltered woman with great spirit who is coming into her own. With the help if Pierce and Sam, Maggie finds her life getting more interesting and the world she lives in much different than she imagined. And of course, Mrs. Pig is there to support them all.
I received this copy as an ARC.
I’ve been looking forward to reading this book so much. Finally I got my grubby little hands on it and it was totally worth the wait.
This book had me giggeling/snorting through the whole book. I could totally follow the #BigGirlProblems and having once been a pug owner I could appreciate Mrs. Pig and her brand of love/craziness. Throw in some hot dudes, magic and enough intrigue to choke a cow and you have a 5 star book. Now I just have to survive until Cursed comes out.
I really look forward to the next book in the series. This debut author does not disappoint.
Fantastic read, well written with a great plot and characters. I was engrossed from start to finish. Ann Swan’s debut novel is a page turner, I couldn’t put it down! This book has magic, intrigue, love, humor, sexy men. It is Maggie’s destiny to save magic. Pierce and Sam and their talking dogs definitely make her life more interesting. Maggie also has has Mrs. Pig her talking pug for support. I didn’t see that ending coming either! I can’t wait to read the next book!
