Court of Nightfall (The Nightfall Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition
by Karpov Kinrade
The writing team of Karpov Kinrade bring us a Post-apocalyptic Dystopian Urban Fantasy with Nephilim, angels and super-powered humans who are being hunted and executed for using those powers.
But this is more that just a paranormal story. This book is a conversation about war, peace and prejudice and how societal change should occur. That conversation is extraordinary,m to watch, yet takes nothing from the story. This alone makes the book worth reading. The addition to angel, vampire and fairy lore.
Set in a post-apocalyptic war between humans, angels and the Nephilim (the results of an angel and human pregnancy), this story follows Scarlet Knight. In her world, people with abilities – the Zeniths or Zens – are less than. The Zens are on the lowest rung of society. Someone is trafficking them and someone is killing them.
This book not only takes on the horror of child trafficking, Karpov and Kinrade take on institutional change. Scarlet understands that change inside the institutions takes decades, if it ever happens. Her color blindness is a metaphor, reminding us that sometimes, you need to change yourself to change things. The conversation continues between Scarlet and her friends – when she tries to explain that once you are entrenched into the system you want to change, it has already changed you
The writing itself is sharp, crisp and fascinating, and the magical system reminds me of the very early X-Men comics and animated series. It is not the people who have talents who control things, instead
The story is fascinating and I’ll be adding the next in the series to my giant Matterhorn sized TBR. Seriously, the question about how effective change from the inside vs the outside is enthralling.

This is one of my favorite series and I usually won’t pick favorites because I love books. This first book in the series is about a poor, kind of regular girl growing up in what seems to be almost a post apocalyptic world. There were several wars that remade society and combining a poor society, full of bigotry and the Templar Knights. Only in this story there are several types of nights. The society is formed around their hate of Zeniths, which are people whose ancestors reproduced with angels and they have special powers. Instead of training these people and thinking of them as special they are considered worse than second rate citizens. Scarlett , the main character, starts off the story as a young child and she grows up throughout the book. Scarlet is brilliant but the authors have mastered showing her age, innocence and growth at different stages of her life. Scarlet is not like the others in the book, she wants to be zenith and makes friends with zenith children. This book really sets the stage for the later books. It shows how she grows as a person, learns, thinks and the relationships that shape her into the great person she becomes. As a child Scarlett has a unique way of thinking that other kids usually don’t follow yet her age still shows through the writing. The character building is great and very complete. Her parents are loving, great parents who teach her things that normal kids don’t get to learn but it is obvious there is a little more going on in adult land than little scarlet knows. I have a knack for figuring out a book, movie or premise of something within the first few chapters of 15 minutes. Even knowing what happens later, I was not able to predict what these secrets were her parents had and all of the multiple storylines that come out later. This book is brilliantly written and as you read more of the books you learn more about what was happening as Scarlett was a child. Scarlett is a brave, tough and stubborn main character. All the characters, such as Scarlett, her friends, mentor and family are likable characters and very well developed. There are multiple storylines upon multiple storylines that are all there for a reason and eventually come together. But not all in this book. I have never seen another author keep up with so many secrets and different things happening at the same time as in this series. I love that you never know who is doing what , who you should trust and what people’s true motivations for anything are. I have been waiting a long time for the 3rd book, I believe, to come out, but rereading this book I can see how intricate the process has writing has to be and how it would take a lot of time and effort to come up with this great of a world/characters/storyline and keep everything and everyone straight. A lot of authors forget someone’s name in a sequel, these characters may have several names or lives and they are all kept straight which is amazing. I’m trying not to skip ahead as I couldn’t stop reading long enough to write a review, I read 2 of the short stories and the second book before I could take a break and write this. The books are that good. I recommend not skipping the novellas as the have great information in them to help you better understand what is happening in the books. They are important. I hate novellas usually and usually skip them. These are necessary. I’m excited about the new book coming out this year and am rereading the series. Even knowing what happens it is still exciting and there was a ton of stuff i didn’t remember from the first time so it is just as good if not better the second time. I don’t want to give anything away or I’d give a more detailed review. I haven’t read a Karpov-kinrade book I didn’t like, yet, but this series is my favorite of theirs and prob my favorite series ever. I would say I wish their were more books but the books are so long and detailed it took me almost a week to read the first book and I usually read a book in 1-3 days. I’m very glad I was able to reread this book and am very happy they made it free for all of us for a few days so that I can own it! Thank you to Karpov-Konrad for all your hard work and great minds that came up with this world that is full of secrets and subterfuge.
I never get tired of this series. I’m doing a re-read in preparation for the next book in the series releasing next month. I’m doing my best to draw it out, but I can’t help but devour these books. The world building and character development is phenomenal. The action scenes are great, and not over-detailed to the point where I got bored (which I often do if they are drawn-out and detailed fighting). And of course, this series has the classic Karpov Kinrade plot twists that make their books so gripping and leave you guessing in the best way!

This is a great start to epic series. This is one of my favorites and the whole series will keep u on the edge of your seat and wanting more!
I absolutely love this book, and the entire series. Karpov-Kinrade nailed it with this series.
I Loved this book!!
This is my favorite series by this author. You will not be disappointed. There is so much going on in every book you pick up. There is a point in this series where I became so wrapped up in the characters it was like I was a part of the book. When they cried I cried. When they were happy I was happy etc. This is the type of book I enjoy reading. The kind where the characters leave a lasting impression. Thanks again Karpov Kindrade for writing this series!
I got the old and new version of this book as an ARC in exchange for review.
The first version review is below –
This book had me from the moment I started reading it. It is one of those books that if you have the time, you will finish it in one sitting because it is that good!
Karpov Kinrade is the only author I know that can write in several different genres and have each book make you think that is the only genre they write.
The heroine of this book is Scarlett Night. She seems like an average girl who wants to be a pilot (in a catastrophic world) until the night her parents die. From that moment on she gets thrown in to a world of chaos filled with legends of her family’s past which may or may not be true. From there she has to figure out how to basically save the world…
The revised review –
WOW!
I feel like I am reading a whole new book with the amount of content that got added.
Scarlett, still the hero but her story just got so much deeper and her world all around her became so much more expanse. I am so glad this was redone, not because the first one was bad, (it wasn’t, not in the least) but because there is so much more story that it needed to be said.
The amount of detail to of her childhood and her being thrust into the patrician society is amazing.
I seriously cannot wait to read the next books.
I loved this book! Cannot wait for the next one. I will be watching out for new things from this writing duo beyond this series as well.
The above was when I read the book prior to the extension the authors did. I couldn’t imagine how they might do it (I’m no writer), but I was very, very pleased with how it turned out. Though I loved the story the first time around because of the uniqueness of it (in my reading experience anyway), the extension provides so much more depth to the characters and story line. I find that I enjoy books that have a bit of real world grit to them as opposed to everything being sunshine and rainbows all the time where nothing bad ever really happens. I loved every bit of what was added and changed, and I’m even that much more excited about following the series than I was already.
I can say even though I was a fan originally, there were a few things that I felt were a little unclear/confusing, and the extension took care of that as well.
Can’t wait for Daughter of Strife!! Although a re-read of House of Ravens is in order first along with my first pass at Night of Nyx and Song of Kai!
I don’t include spoilers in my reviews, so parts of this review may seem vague. This is simply to avoid letting you know something you might have rather read yourself.
I was introduced to Karpov Kinrade’s work with the release of Vampire Girl. It was so hyped up on Facebook that I simply had to buy and read it. I was not disappointed and bought the 2nd book as soon as it came out as well. While waiting for book 3 in the series, I decided to check out one of their other series, The Nightfall Chronicles, which is what brings me to this review. Obviously, I had high expectations considering how much I adore the Vampire Girl books so far. I’m happy to report that it did NOT let me down. From the very beginning, before any paranormal aspects were introduced, I was already hooked on Scarlett’s story and what would happen with her challenges, and with her best friend. Once the more dramatic events of the book started coming into play, I struggled to put the book down! It was so exciting and different from other stories of this nature I’ve read in the past! And Scarlett continued to be a character that I could relate to, but also a strong female lead, which I love. She has to face her entire world and everything she’s known to be true changing in one night and she still stands strong and doesn’t let anyone tell her what she should do. She makes her own decisions and she stays true to what she believes in, no matter who tries to sway her otherwise. I’m very eager to get my hands on book two and see what will happen next. I recommend this book to any fans of Karpov Kinrade, people who love to read paranormal/fantasy books, and anyone who likes stories about Angels and/or Nephilim.
