Sometimes the heart wants what it can’t have.
That’s the motto Silas Mackenzie, the president of The Dixie Wardens MC, has lived by since he was a young man.
Now he’s well on the way to middle age, has three grown children and he’s lusting after a woman he should definitely stay away from.
Especially not one that his ex-girlfriend had given birth to, and happens to be only twenty-nine years … be only twenty-nine years old.
Sawyer isn’t a young girl at heart, though.
She’s seen the inside of a jail cell for eight long years, and every one of them was spent paying for a crime she didn’t commit.
Silas Mackenzie knows as soon as he sees her that the she has sacrificed enough.
And maybe…just maybe…so has he.
It’s time for Silas Mackenzie to get what he deserves, and, in the process, put a little bit of happy back into Sawyer’s world, one rough, bearded kiss at a time.

Silas has been in most of the books that i have read of Vale’s since the start with the Freebird series. and what i have noticed is that he is portrayed as being a bit of a jerk in the eyes of his kids. still there has always been this feeling that there is more to him than what his kids know about him. and boy was i right. it was when Sawyer walks into his life that you get to see how he really isn’t the jerk that he was first thought to be. there is a protective side to Silas, and it is this protective side that made him come across the way that he has. this side of Silas is front and center when it comes to Sawyer.
its with Silas’s help and love that Sawyer is able to get her life back. and they go to show that sometimes age is just a number.
i know that Silas will appear in future books cause he is the badass that he is. and finally getting his story proves that he is an even bigger badass than what i thought. but it also shows that he is a family man deep down that will do what he needs to do for his kids.
I love Silas, he is an ultimate MC Pres and alpha male biker. Sawyer has such a kind heart and she is trying to start over. I loved this story and especially getting to know Silas more, he has been such a mystery. These characters are so engaging. I absolutely love this series so much.
Okay, so this was one of the books I was looking forward to the most. It’s Silas, y’all!! There were so many moving parts and people to this story that I find myself craving more.
What developed between Silas and Sawyer was quick and easy. I liked that she seemed so well-suited for him. I think at this point in his life, he needed what she had to offer. And while my heart broke for everything Sawyer had to live through, such as eight years in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, suffering atrocities at the hands of prison guards, the bullying of the townspeople, I was happy that she had someone like Silas and his people at her back.
So what else did I find in this book?
I got my first real glimpse of Lynn (you can find him in Repeat Offender). In this book he’s known as Black Jack and although I learned quite a bit about him in his own book, seeing him in this light was quite the experience. I wonder if he’ll pop up again in these original stories.
knowing that Silas (and Lynn) are CIA and actually seeing it in action are two different things
Silas shaved off his braided beard (although he does sound super hot without it)
Sterling, the Navy SEAL who has popped up now and then, makes an appearance and I think his book is next. There was a definite spark between him and Ruthie (Sawyer’s bestie/cell mate)
Silas visiting Tunnel’s grave… heartbreaking. He carries so many burdens as it is and it hurt to see how much losing Torren had effected him
You want a story full of heart, drama and intrigue? Read this book!
Loved finally getting Silas’s story
Silas and Sawyers book wraps up some information we all have been dying for since we started with the Freebird series.
We start off with a tragedy happening to Sawyer who then spends the next eight years beating herself up for what happened. But as the story progress new information comes to light that what happened to Sawyer shouldn’t of happened.
Silas after meeting Sawyer ends up helping her and is the one who brings this new information to light. But he needs to watch out a ghost from the past is back.
Go read this story it’s great, you won’t be disappointed
Counter to My Intelligence is the seventh story in the Heroes of the Dixie Wardens MC series by Lani Lynn Vale and finally, let me say it one more time, finally, we get Silas Mackenzie’s story!!! He has popped up here and there throughout the other series (we met him for the first time in the first book of the Freebird series that started it all, as far as I know) and I have always felt that he needs to get his woman, there must be someone out there, in Lani’s universe, that fits his crazy!
You can read the story as a standalone only if you do not want to get hooked on something amazing! I still remember the first book I picked up and next I knew I had downloaded the reading order and off I went so just be prepared, you have been warned, you should really start from the beginning, at least from the beginning of the series!
So, I am regressing, as I said I had always wanted Silas, the silver fox, to meet his bada… woman and, drumroll please, enters Sawyer and if you were ready for a kicking butt and taking no prisoner Amazon, you guessed wrong … that is not really what Silas needs, he needs Sawyer … it is two people who have sacrificed for the others all their lives, Silas longer than Sawyer, years wise, but sometimes it is not the time that matter but the pain one has suffered through that time and Sawyer, she will break your heart …
It was a pure Lani Lynn Vale story, I inhaled with couple of hours and I was sitting there thinking, what next? And as I was still feeling that I did not want to leave Lani’s universe, I returned to the beginning, again … that IS the beauty of Lani’s writing, you can read her stories again and again and each time you discover something new … so if this is your first step into this universe, welcome and the world just opened up for you!
Silas FRIGGIN’ Mackenzie! This Man is the Ultimate Alpha! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s Read
Silas and Sawyer are like two beacons drawn to each other and I love every single minute of it. Not only does is he super protective of her. He is a man set to clear her name and her past. She is just plain falling hard for him. It is so fun to listen to their story!
5 Alpha Stars!
Lani Lynn Vale never ceases to amaze me. This is another wonderful story in this series. I am so glad and happy we got Silas’ story. Sure, Silas and Sawyer had an age difference.. but who care, you cannot deny their chemistry and their undeniable connection. I enjoyed this story.
Silas was the book we all waited for in The Dixie Wardens and LLV gave us what we asked for and more. Sawyer had been through hell the past eight years and finally being on the outside didn’t seem to be much better, that was until one silver fox President of an MC lit up her world. Their story is action packed, filled with chaos and mayhem and has passion so hot that it will melt your kindle as you devour the words. As past meets present it will take the strength of both Silas and Sawyer along with their family to finally bring it to a close. A witty, emotional and breathtaking story that will leave you completely and utterly satisfied.
YES! I absolutely adored this read! Silas and Sawyer’s story is steamy, intriguing, and captivating! I highly recommend this book!
This is the seventh book in the Dixie Wardens MC series. You don’t have to read them in order. But if you don’t read them all, you’re missing out on some great reads. I have loved every character in each of these books. I am hooked and have to read them as soon as I can.
Sawyer has had a horrible eight years. She was serving eight years in prison for killing four people. Don’t worry, she’s not a murderer. It was a car accident. There is more to it, but you need to read the story.
She is out now. She still has tremendous guilt over what happened. She was headed towards depression, but someone saved her.
Silas is the President of the Dixie Wardens. He is in his fifties and has grown kids. I’ve always been curious about Silas. I can say all my questions have been answered.
“This love…it would withstand the test of time. She got me, and I got her.”
Of course the little intros for each chapter had me laughing. I look forward to reading those with every new book.
“Is that your flashlight or are you happy to see me? Oh, that’s really your flashlight? Bummer.”
This is a series I never want to end. I can’t wait for the next one.
I am just going to start out and say, as usual, this is part of a series. If you don’t want to be all confused and lost and feel like your missing something, then do yourself a favor and read the previous books first.
I will admit, when I read the blurb to see who this book was about, I was a bit nervous. Silas with a younger girl…. I shouldn’t have been. I should never have doubted Lani, she did this book…..as about as perfect as perfect can get.
We have all been waiting for Silas’ story since it came to light that he wasn’t the d-bag that we thought he was introduced as in the Freebirds series. Lani started The Dixie Wardens MC and proceeded to give Silas a different look. I for one was freaking stoked when she did this spin off.
So sometimes life takes a dump on you, and your life is never the same again. Well this happens to Sawyer and for the most part she feels that the direction that her life took, she deserves. When she finally can rejoin the outside world, she ….doesn’t know how to go about it, doesn’t even really know how to start. She goes throu the motions and just hangs with her family and her best friend. Silas seems to catch her when she hits bottom. Silas knows he should fight this but….sometimes its just time to do what you want with your life instead of what is good for everyone else. That’s it no more spoilers!
The chemistry between the two was freaking off the charts, the sexy time scenes were so freaking HOT!!! I love being sucked into this world that Lani created and I can’t wait until the next book that I can throw myself back into it! I give this way more the 5 stars but amazon and GR only go up so high.
I am in love with Silas and Sawyer. First of all I love how the age difference between the two was a non issue and never got in the way of their relationship. Silas is just an awesome individual who is always there for the member of the Dixie Wardens and truly fulfills his role as president. The way he protected and cared for Sawyer after all the things she suffered through and endured after one terrible night ruined her life melted my heart. How often do you read a book where the heroine is the one that’s been in prison? That’s what I really loved about this one. Sawyer was hardened from her time in prison, but was still vulnerable. Silas did a great job to protect her where she needed it.
Counter to my Intelligence was really good and I loved these characters so much. The story was really great and I enjoyed it so much. One of my faves.
I have never read Lani’s book until Silas story.. The cover had captured my interest with a smirk. Lani’s book soothed my emotions. The stories were so different and each will drawn you more with the uniqueness..
Sawyer was an unfortunate soul and very gentle woman.. Her encounter with Silas was a fate. Both broken souls entwined with each other.
Silas was my favorite character from all Lani’s book. Old fox can fly high too! His presence was very strong, stubborn, loving and hot hotneess
The book was written with freshness.. I fell in love with the mood, the humours, steamy hunka love and a bunch of hot alpha Male. LANI’s brought the story with care, easy for me to understand that despite the past was horrific but the ending was sweeter like a fruit pie.
I could not wait to get this book. Silas is the president of a MC. He is one badass no one wants to mess with. He falls in love with a woman young enough to be his daughter. She is the daughter of his ex girlfriend. Just goes to show love is blind. You have no control over love.
Another great Dixie Wardens read. The story flowed well there was no getting bogged down in details and the chemistry was great between the H/h. I look forward to many more great reads from this author
