The beginning of the Coulson Empire, 1918:
Mary Ellen’s father didn’t trade her for a house — exactly. Marrying the wealthy and handsome Randall Coulson is not something Mary Ellen wants to do, but being the obedient daughter she agrees to the marriage.
Randall Coulson wants Mary Ellen for one reason — to give him sons. He has no desire to form a bond of love or friendship with his young … with his young bride. His own heart is already taken.
A bittersweet story of love, lies, and family secrets, taking place during a turbulent period of American history, when the perception of women and their role in society changed in one woman’s lifetime.

I didn’t want the story to end!!! Don’t think I’m going to continue the “SAGA” though. It was a happy ending in my opinion.
Couldn’t put it down. Ending of first book surprised me, so not predictable.
Marvellous!
Love the way the story is told.
I really liked this book. It had some unexpected turns in the story line. The characters were well developed and seemed true to the era. I don’t want to be a spoiler so won’t give details. If you like reading about that time in history and feel the unfairness to women and how they coped you might like this one.
Pretty good
I wasn’t sure if I could get behind the plot at first. I persevered and was glad I did! The generational spanning of the story, along with the growth of the characters left me wanting to find their resolution.
romantic and heartbreaking.
I enjoyed the history that this writer included in her story.
I don’t like reading ‘saga’ books. I want one book to start and finish the story
I loved the way this historical novel weaved world events and personal challenges into one woman’s life story.
I enjoyed reading this book. It’s part of a series but is a standalone novel. The characters were well written. Sometimes the book was predictable but I still liked the storyline.
Not a fan! Boring.
Very poiniant story. This story highlights how far women have come in being masters of their own lives.
Very interesting characters and particularly character development! I really didn’t foresee the ending and definitely wonder what will happen in sequels to this. Good writing for this genre! (Did have a couple of steamy scenes I had to skip, as I don’t like that in my books, but wasn’t an overwhelming number of them.)
I couldn’t put the book down. I rushed right back to it if I needed to be away for a bit. All in all, an enjoyable read. It’s a deceptively light book. There is no deep psychological examination of the rights or wrongs of any of the characters; there were no drama or crisis of the moment to deal with. Even the dying of one of the main …
Was a good story full of irony and some sadness. Interesting history of the period, both historical and cultural.
Thus was a surprise book. Well written, good plot and informative about the times and the choices of women.
I absolutely loved this book. It was heartbreaking and happy at the same time.
Great story
