Mary Ellen’s father didn’t trade her for a house — exactly. Marrying the wealthy and handsome Randall Coulson is not something Mary Ellen wants to do, but being the obedient daughter she agrees to the marriage.

Although it had many interesting characters, I thought the book was a little “dark”. It didn’t have a happy ever after ending, and I wondered if the main character was ever really happy.
Bittersweet love story
While certainly original, the author’s desire to create scope leaves you with a cold feeling that never thaws. It’s just a tragic story of unrequited love and lonely people that stretches out for decades. If you can take the sadness, the historical setting is well-done.
Nope. Not my cup of tea. Decent writing, but depressing storyline.
Interesting story and perspective. I haven’t decided if I am reading the next book.
Wonderful well Research author. Not my normal type of book as I don’t like saga series. But would definitely recommend this author to anyone who does.
This is not my favorite time period. I found her husband very unlikable, but the whole adultery thing was a real turn off. After that it just got sad.
Short story, quick reading.
Touching.
I really enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this author.
Loved it!!! Not your usual love story and it kept me wanting more.

I did not like this book. It was not interested I did not finish it.
Loved it.
Great holiday read

At points it resembled a …
It was too slow to continue reading. Disappointed.
