Escape to the Chesapeake Bay, where beach life is full of love, surprises and second chances… Trey had to enjoy it…
Since the surgery that destroyed her dreams of having children, schoolteacher Erica Rowe has grown even more dedicated to her work with at-risk teens. So she doesn’t need some cop with a chip on his shoulder putting the program’s future in jeopardy. But when Trey finally connects with the students, Erica’s heart melts. And when, in a tender moment, he admits he longs to have children, her heart breaks. She’s convinced he’d be better off with someone who can give him everything, but she can’t seem to shake the hope that maybe love is enough…

McClain has once again given us a wonderful story.
I love the way she writes and is able to draw us into her story with a injured cop, a hurting woman, and some
teen kids that really needed a second chance in life.
I especially loved Erica’s dog Ziggy! Oh my, such a handsome dog too! I wish that I could’ve had all of his energy!
This is my favorite place to be is on the beach! Don’t you love the sound of the waves to relax you and sing you to sleep at times? I know I do!
She makes me want to go there now! I wish I could however: I can’t at the moment so this lovely book will do.
McC;lain has described some of the scenes in the book that I felt like I was really there!
I think Erica is a wonderful character. I love how the author shows that she is human and that she feels that she needs to be the one in control. She is the one who holds everything together or so it seems.
There were times that I wanted to reach in through the book and just give her a hug to remind her that someone does care.
God does care. He loves us unconditionally and He asks us to lay our burdens at His feet. I know it’s hard to do but it can be done. This is where trust comes in. Trust is such a fragile thing.
But what we choose to do with it it’s up to us. God is good that way. He leaves it up to us to come to Him.
I’m so glad that I have Him in my life. I don’t know where I’d be without him.
Trey and King were a couple of awesome characters too. I loved watching Trey come around so to speak.
A lot of the time attitudes doesn’t get us anywhere in which Trey found that out the hard way.
I enjoyed reading about Trey trying to just get through life the way he knows how.
I was rooting for him because I knew he could do it.
It’s not up to us where we end up at times. It’s where we were meant to be and where God places us where He feels that is best for us even though we don’t see it at first and then after awhile, I smiled with joy when Trey realizes that is where he’s meant to be.
I did feel that there were two different stories going on here and at times it left me feeling confused as to what was going on. It kept going back and forth between Trey and Erica and then Julie and her grand kids.
Here is where I can relate to Julie in trying to connect with my teen. It’s hard believe me.
I feel like sometimes the only way that we can connect with each other is through our music. I’m so glad that he took right off with that. . I’m blessed that he is a good young man now.
The thing that I felt most important was that I felt God working throughout the story from the author’s heart. I could tell she enjoys writing these stories for us readers.
I do like how she deals with some tough subjects in real life and doesn’t beat around the bush about it.
Forgiveness was the most important part of this story.
I just wanted to mention that the supporting characters were wonderful too. Especially the dogs!
They are the real heroes!
I will be looking for more from Lee in the future! Her books are so inspirational and wonderful at the same time.
I’m feeling blessed that I got to read this wonderful story by Lee. I think what makes her stories so great is that she writes from her heart and with Jesus at the wheel to guide her along.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars because the cove will make you want to jump into it and sweep you away with the story that’s inside.
My thanks to the author/Netgalley for a complimentary copy of this book.
was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.
What a beautifully written story of love, family, and the hardships that some people unfortunately have to go through. I loved how close Ericka and Amber were, and even Hannah was a champion throughout the story. Trey was perfect for Ericka and I’m so happy that they ended up falling in love!
this was a new author for me and I will be looking for more books from her.
Good summer read.
Great clean story! Who can resist a story set in Chesapeake Bay! You will love former K-9 officer Trey Harrison who is recovering from an injury. You can’t help but admire the female protagonist Erica Rowe. Erica is a school teacher who works with at-risk teens and cares for her sister who has cancer and her teenage niece! Their mother died from cancer. Erica has had a hysterectomy due to the results of genetic testing but puts her mothering instincts into working with her students. Trey and Erica are attracted to one another but Trey longs for children. Will they be able to work things out? You will enjoy the community of Pleasant Shores where everyone knows each others’ business! I recommend Cottage at the Beach to others. I received an advance copy from the author. This is my honest opinion.
Cottage at the Beach by Lee Tobin McClain is the first book in her new The Off Season series.
Trey Harrison is an injured K9 cop sent to the small town of Pleasant Shores to recuperate and volunteer with a local academy behavioral support program for at-risk teens. His job and future rest not only on his physical recovery but also on his mental and psychological recovery and his performance as a volunteer.
Erica Rowe is Trey’s neighbor in Pleasant Shores. She is the primary teacher for the behavioral support program. She’s initially not impressed with Trey’s interactions with the teens but warms to him as he warms to the kids.
The school’s non-fraternization policy isn’t the only thing holding back a relationship between Trey and Erica, despite their strong attraction to each other, he wants kids and she can’t have them.
Cottage at the Beach is a great way to start a series. Ms. McClain has introduced strong, believable characters and an interesting plot. The setting is beautiful and is used smartly. This isn’t just a heartwarming romance. The author touches on some important aspects of being a woman in a time when we have access to more information than we ever have. Do we really want to know everything, and if we do, what will we do with the information?
I throughly enjoyed this novel. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to all lovers of heartwarming romance.
My thanks to the author, HARLEQUIN – Romance (US & Canada) and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
I loved reading this book from start to finish! The book mostly focuses on Try and Erica’s story but also had other key characters which hopefully will be mentioned to future stories.
I liked reading about Trey’s police work and his K-9 dog partner and the training that is involved. I liked seeing Trey’s character evolve during the story to a man more relatable, nice and patient with others. I loved his passion that he had for this partner and protecting and helping others.
I liked reading about Erica and her passion with helping kids-especially those high risk and from broken homes. She was patient, kind and worked well with everyone-even her boss who was a constant jerk. She was such a great example to the kids! I liked Ziggy (her dog) and the animal healing element throughout this story.
Clean romance, fun characters, great story line… highly recommend! I loved it and I can’t wait to read more in this series!!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
This was a wonderful story and I really enjoyed it. This was a clean read.
This was such a good book to read By Lee. Once again she created another story that came together and created so much happiness! The teacher and the policeman that was a great choice for sure. An especially the K-9 handler aspect of the story. You know that we never know what to expect in life, we have to see what the Lord gives us.
I loved this story about Trey and Erica. Trey is recovering from a work related injury. His K-9 partner has been reassigned to a new handler who is mistreating him. Trey is assigned to help Erica run a school for troubled teens while he heals from his injuries. He misses his dog terribly. Erica finds out that the dog is being mistreated and tells Trey. They try to get the dog away from the other officer but it will put Treys return to the police force at risk. I loved the twists and turns and views from different perspectives. An excellent book.
Ms. McClain proved once again that she isn’t afraid to tackle hard subjects. The subject this time was ovarian cancer and the effect it has on families and those around them. I loved the story and the characters. Both Erica and Trey had a lot of insecurities that they had to get past. I thought it was great when Trey was able to work through some misconceptions he had about his childhood. There was so much that I liked about this book. A wounded cop, a police dog, heroic troubled teens… I would recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book from the author and was not required to write a positive review.
Very few authors create a book world that makes me want to pack up everything I own and move there, but this author does it time and again. This new series is set in a small beach town on the Chesapeake Bay, complete with small-town politics, troubled teens, quirky neighbors and an unruly dog. It’s also the home of Healing Heroes, a program where injured first responders can come to heal. Police officer, Trey Harrison, and his K9 partner, King, are the program’s most recent clients.
Trey is only interested in doing his rehab and getting back to his job in the city. He doesn’t want to make nice with the neighbors. He doesn’t want to become a part of the community. And he definitely doesn’t want to work with at-risk teens or their prickly but beautiful teacher, but that’s a condition of him being part of Healing Heroes and staying in the beach-side cottage that will be his home for the next several weeks.
Erica Rowe has her hands full. She’s the sole support of her niece and her sister who is fighting cancer, her dog is badly in need of obedience school, and her program teaching troubled teens is in danger of being shut down. The last thing she needs is a cop with an attitude who’s working with her teens against his will.
Love them or hate them, all of these characters will leave their mark. From a recently divorced grandmother trying to find her new purpose and a teen trying to figure out where she fits, to a school principal who needs to crawl back under the rock he came from and troubled teens bonding with senior citizens, all of these characters bring the story alive with their distinctive personalities. In no time at all I was invested in every aspect of this multi-layered storyline.
This one deals with some hard life lessons wrapped in themes of forgiveness, healing, community and second chances. Beautifully told through flawed, complex, relatable characters, the strong emotions are a direct hit to the heart, making this a remarkable, unforgettable read that you won’t want to miss.
Erika Rowe has rented a cottage on the Chesapeake Bay in Pleasant Shores, Maryland. Pleasant Shores is not a major tourist destination. Actually it is a quiet small town. Erika and her sister Amber visited their aunt here in their youth. Now, after the death due to cancer of their mother and the cancer treatments for Amber, Erika has scored a teaching job in Pleasant Shores. Erika has fulfilled her quest to bring Amber and niece Hannah to Pleasant Shores. Teaching at-risk teens is the perfect job for Erika. It fulfills her nurturing nature. Erika had screening done and since she was at risk for cancer had a hysterectomy. No babies for Erika. Her at-risk students and her goldendoodle Ziggy are her major life fulfillment now. Then she is assigned an assistant as part of a program for disabled police officers. He’s good-looking, hot and has quite an attitude. Hmm. How is this going to work out?
K-9 Officer Trey Harrison has been injured on the job. His boss thinks Trey’s atttitude contributed to what happened when he was injured. Trey admits that his divorce and his attitude might have been a contributing factor. Returning to his job as a K-9 officer in Philadelphia depends on his recovery and how he does performing for the program for disabled police officers – assisting Erika Rowe with her at-risk students. When he meets Erika Trey feels attracted to her. Maybe his time in Pleasant Shores will be better than he expected.
Cottage at the Beach by Lee Tobin McClain is the debut book in her new series, The Off Season. This story has all the good feels and heartwarming aspects present in this author’s stories. She always writes likeable characters with major issues to overcome and has done so again in this book. The drain and concern of taking care of a loved one with cancer and after receiving cancer treatment is front and center here. Lee Tobin McClain outlines how overwhelming this care and concern can be. We also see how an injury that means the possibility of never getting back to a much loved, meaninful job can be very draining. The author has Erika and Trey meet and discover that together life is so much better. I love this author’s voice and her stories. Cottage at the Beach is a great beginning to another Lee Tobin McClain heartwarming small-town romance series.
This author’s books are always a great read. Pain in the lives of Trey and Erica drives this story. Thoroughly enjoyed all the town interaction as well as the location. I received a copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
Trey is a amazing man. When he is sent to Pleasant Shores for rehab his life will change. Erica is truly a remarkable woman. The way she takes care of her family and the kids at the school is wonderful. When Erica meets Trey she doesn’t want him working with her. Watching these two become closer with help from there dogs will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. You will feel God working throughout this wonderful story. Lee Tobin McClain is truly a wonderful inspirational author. I am blessed to have the opportunity to review this book for her. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
I believe this was the first book I have read from this author. Overall I found it to be an enjoyable read, there was alot of things going on in the book which at times made it a little hard to keep track of all the things taking place. I was happy that by the end of the book it seems to be more consistant and worked out the way I had hoped. For those that enjoy a good love story I believe most would enjoy this book,
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my fair and honest review.
I enjoyed this book. There were several stories going on at once, but it was a good way to get to know various characters in the town. Trey and Erica’s was emotional and touching. I look forward to the next book in the series
