He thought he was done. His career as a special forces sniper was over. He’d lost his leg and his dignity in that ambush. Now, after nearly a year of rehab, he was fighting the toughest battle in his life: prove he was still worthy to serve. His chance: Contract with Fury Security to pull protection for a rancher by the name of Sam Bishop. If he succeeded in routing out the bad guy, Cord would be … Cord would be back on the team.
The bonus:
He’d be able to get the hell away from all the counselors and therapists trying to tell him how to come to grips with his PTSD and missing limb. There were no emotions and feelings in west Texas, just rough necks and grit. Exactly what he needed.
The catch:
Sam’s real name is Samantha and she’s not a codgy old man – she’s the one girl from Cord’s past he never got over. He thought he’d lost his chance with her, and now that he wasn’t a whole man, he didn’t deserve her.
Samantha is determined to show Cord he’s everything she ever wanted. Her biggest battle isn’t the stalker threatening her life: it’s making Cord see he’s worthy of her love and so much more.

3 1/2 Star Review…..
While Cord’s Chance is a worthy addition to the Men of Mercy series, I believed it could have been so much more; this in part was due to the novella length of the book, which I felt should have been extended to tell Cord’s story in more depth. I also would have liked to hear more about Sam and Cord’s back story and something extra at the end to tell readers where they are at now, would have tied this story up nicely.
Overall, this is a good read; touching on emotional and sensitive topics that many readers will possibly relate to. So while Cord’s Chance wasn’t my favourite Men of Mercy story, it was still entertaining.
This book was super easy to read cover to cover in one sitting. It was a great story with wonderful characters. Cord is hoping to be done with rehab and getting back on active duty with his team. He is offered a chance to prove he’s ready by taking a job for his friend’s security company. Sam is being threatened and not knowing what to do she hires Fury Security to investigate. She was floored when they sent Cord, her high school crush. What follows is some heart wrenching details about PTSD and the men that come home with it, some laughs, danger and intrigue and a lot of passion. Will what started out as Cord’s chance to prove himself becomes Cord’s chance for true love?
An amazingly well written story that you won’t be sorry you read. It’s part of the Men Of Mercy series, but can be read as a stand-alone.
4 STARS FOR CORD’s CHANCE!! This book was good with all the feels. The story is full of drama, suspense and love, which is a Lindsay Cross signature book. You will definitely want to hear Cord and Samantha’s story. If you love this series you will for sure want to read this book.
Cord is a determined man after his injury oversees on a mission. He is committed to returning to active duty as a sniper. He doesn’t want to admit that he has some PTSD to deal with, some survivor’s guilt and not to mention the fallout from his unhappy childhood. The one bright spot in that childhood was a girl named Sam. In order to return to active duty, he has to prove that he is ready. So he is sent to do a temp job for a friend who runs a security firm. The person he is sent to help has a stalker. When he arrives at the ranch in Texas to start the job, he comes face to face with Sam, the girl of his dreams. Now he has the chance to tell her how he feels and maybe finally find some happiness. But will she feel the same?
This was my first book by Lindsay Cross. She was recommended by Adriana Locke as this story was supposed to be part of the Landry Kindle World until that program was cancelled earlier this year. When I saw that Cord’s Chance was about a soldier who suffered an injury on active duty and lost part of his leg, I had to read it. I am a total junkie for this trope, I buy or put on my list any book like this. I quite enjoyed this story. Cord’s injury was portrayed realistically, the side effects of his injury were conveyed so strongly that my leg started to hurt. Sam was a wonderful character, so loving and willing to help anyone. The fact that she was running a ranch for wounded vets didn’t feel forced at all. Her background in counseling and animal therapy and Cord coming back into her life when she needed him really felt like the hand of fate. I do have to say though that I found the ending a little sudden. That said, I will be checking out more stories from Lindsay Cross. Overall, this was a lovely story about two people who really need the love and support of one another to be whole. 4 and 1/4 stars for Cord’s Chance.
It was so nice to return to the Men of Mercy series. I was thrilled to see Ranger and Amy and Hayden and Hoyt and where the guys are now! I love these fierce men and their families.
Cord and Samatha’s story was good. Novellas are never long enough for me, so I would have liked to have seen then a longer story here, but it was well told. I loved how Sam never looked at Cord as a broken man and she eventually got him to see that. I loved how the story really looked at the struggles of an amputee and everything they go through. It was a good read.
This is the first book by Lindsay Cross that I’ve read. I know it’s part of a series and I’ve already purchased the first book and will read it as soon as I get a chance to.
Cord is a great character. He lost a leg on his last mission. We meet him as he is finishing up in rehab trying to get ready to rejoin his team as a sniper. He has busted his ass getting to this point.
He has to prove himself by taking a civilian protection job.
Samantha is amazing. Her rehab center is for wounded vets and abused horses. She gives them her all.
But she has a stalker. That’s where Cord comes in.
They have a past though.
This is a great second chance read. It’s fast paced and has some steamy scenes.
Cord is working for Fury Security to determine his fitness to work in the military after losing his leg in an ambush. He finds out he will be working for Samantha (Sam) Bishop, the woman he crushed on in high school. The couple never had a chance to get together before Cord left for the military. This was a short but good story in the series.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving a review.
I love a good second chance romance, what I love more is when the couple truly heals from the past and move to the future. Cord can be his own worst enemy. He is determined to get back out in the field again, he is on a mission to prove to everyone he can do it, but is he mentally ready. Cord is given a chance to prove he is ready; he just needs to go to Texas to assist a rancher.
As Cord arrives at the Ranch he feels confident again, he feels like this will be a walk in the park, until he find out that the Sam he is looking for is not a man, but a beautiful woman from his past. Sam is running a therapeutic horse facility for injured veterans. She is being stalk and needs some help, she is in complete shock that the man that is going to help her is the man from her past.
In this story one can feel the passion Sam and Cord have, Cord just needs to look what is in front of him instead of thinking everyone is trying to “kid glove” him. It is a quick read and I really hope we get more from this couple. See more in my YouTube channel – A Day With Ethel.

Cord’s Chance is a standalone book in the Men of Mercy series with a cross over to the Fury Security series about a team of SEALS and the women who love them.
Cord is a sniper who was on a mission with another team. They were ambushed and most of the team lost. Cord lost his leg below his knee and feels a lot of guilt about missing something he should have seen. His whole goal, for nearly a year, has been to regain his skills mentally and physically to rejoin his team. He pushes his body hard, and sometimes it fights back. Mentally he mostly tries to ignore the issues. His commanding officer sets him up with a private security company on a one man mission at a Texas ranch for disabled veterans as a final trial to see of he is combat ready.
Sam (Samantha) left behind her ex-boyfriend of two months the first time he hit her. She moved several states and using her master’s degree in psychology and her kind heart turned a ranch she inherited into a horse ranch for the recovery of veteran’s who were disabled in combat. Things were going well until recently when some cows were mutilated and a stalker was in her room while she slept. Now she has a private security company coming to help protect her, and more importantly in her mind, also her clients.
Sam and Cord were high school friends. Neither expected each other when they meet at the ranch. They each have feelings for the other and issues to work through. Now Cord has more reasons than ever to protect Sam and keep her safe. Can they get their second chance and answer the mysteries? Enjoy Linsay’s book to find out!
Proving yourself worthy of second chances…
When all you know and all you are has been stripped away in the blink of an eye…. you work and fight super hard to see if you are worthy of a second chance in career … yet it’s life/love that will be the ultimate test for Cord. Opportunities that Cord will take on, when he accepts a security contract from a friend, to prove he is fit to resume his career as a Special Forces sniper…… it seems all too easy, but can sometimes prove to be more than meets the eye for Cord.
Both main characters are strong and resilient on the outside and vulnerable inside to not wanting to be hurt. Sam is a compassionate young woman who uses her work/degree to help former miliatry Vets who are struggling with the use of rescue horses… loved that premise of the story. Care, attention, and compassion are always needed.
This is a fast paced novella, a beautiful read of Chance and Samantha’s journey. They just might have a bit of work to accomplish and a stalker to expose first… someone is out to harm Samantha (Sam). It’s filled with action and dramatic suspense as Cord sets out to find out who wishes harm to Sam
Lindsay gifts you a story of second chances at life, love and work, well… when you can set your attitude and perceptions of others aside, to see the bigger picture of what’s important. To learn from others, but most especially from that special person that comes back into your life by chance.
If you love page turning drama, intrigue and love solving a stalker mystery, Lindsay Cross delivers with CORD’S CHANCE as a short story/novella. A great weekend read. There are recurring characters from within this series, this is read as a stand alone book. I believe you will appreciate a better understanding and reading experience delving into the entire MEN OF MERCY series.
This is quick second chance at romance. It’s has some action, suspense and romance. It will capture your attention from the beginning as it takes you through all sorts of emotions. It has great characters that pull at your heartstrings. The connection and chemistry between the characters is sizzling. It’s an entertaining read. Looking forward to reading more.
Cord’s Chance by Lindsay Cross
Men of Mercy #7
This Novella length second chance at love story stars amputee SEAL sniper Cord Carter and ranch owner Samantha “Sam” Bishop. Cord has sustained a battle injury and spent months in rehabilitation to be combat ready when called back to his team. Before going back he is given a “test” and the test is to guard Sam Bishop from danger. Little does he know that Sam is someone once important to him or that the ranch she runs is set up for rehabilitation of military veterans. Sam is unsure who the bad guy is – is it an abusive ex or a neighbor or an employee or??? Cord is still dealing with a bit of PTSD and compartmentalizing but eager to get back on active duty. Sam and Cord are drawn to one another in spite of the threat that lurks nearby and quickly act on this attraction. Whether or not they overcome the threat and find a future together is what this story is about.
I enjoyed the story but would have liked a bit more of the couple’s back story and perhaps an epilogue that shows how the couple is doing in the future. I felt it was a bit rushed but thoroughly enjoyed the story anyway.
NOTE: I learned something after googling whether or not amputees are sent back to the battlefield. I found that amputees that are able to meet the physical requirements are able to return to active duty if they would like to.
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
This story is a beautiful suspense filled romance. A Handsome military man wounded in action and trying desperately to get back on active duty even though he lost part of his leg .When he is offered a temporary job working for Fury Security to find and stop a threat for a ranch. He thinks it may be his COd way of trying to let him know he will never be Sent back to active duty. But when he’s told it’s kind of a test to see how he feels with stress and possible danger. So when he arrived at the Ranch to help and protect Sam he is really surprised to find its Samantha the beauty that he had a crush on in high school but was too afraid to ask her out.Sand and believe it’s Cord the guy she was in love with all through her school years but never thought someone as handsome as him would ever want a girl like her.Cord can’t believe how beautiful and curvy Sam is.She was always beautiful but he doesn’t think she know how desirable is really is.Can Cord get to the bottom of who killing her animals? Will he be able to keep her safe? Will they realize how they feel about each other before it’s too late. The twists and turnd s to this story will keep you reading until the very last page. I can hardly wait to see what’s next by this multi talented author.
This novella in the Men of Mercy series features Cord Carter and Samantha Bishop. These two share a friendship that started back in high school. They were always attracted to each other but he thought he wasn’t good enough for her so the attraction never went anywhere. I love how strong yet vulnerable Sam is. I also love how Cord could deny his thoughts and feelings about Sam until he came face-to-face with her after all the years apart. Their chemistry is explosive!
This is a great story line with fantastic characters! The romance was sizzling and the the action had me on the edge of my seat. I LOVE visiting the Men of Mercy and I can’t wait until the next time.
I really like the Men of Mercy books and enjoyed this one as well. My only complaint is that was too short and seemed to end a bit abruptly.
Let me begin by saying that I have read almost all of the Men of Mercy books and some are longer than others. Cord’s Chance is one of the shorter books so I consider it more of a novella because I read it in one sitting. Cord’s Chance ties together the Men of Mercy series with the Fury Security book. Cord was injured while on overseas and has been in rehab trying to recover both mentally and physically. His C.O. feels that before he is released back into active duty that he should do a civilian detail with his friend that owns Fury Security. He is sent on a random assignment and it’s to find out who is stalking a rancher in Texas. Unbeknownst to Cord, the rancher is Sam a.k.a. Samantha the girl that he had feelings for in high school but never acted on. Samantha has taken over her grandfather’s ranch but has turned it into something more, a therapy ranch for disabled veterans. She never expected to see Cord again after high school and the way their friendship ended. The story is good but I feel that it was rushed and could have been better with the addition of more interaction throughout however fans of the Men of Mercy books will definitely want to read this. It’s told from dual POV and there’s angst, action, suspense and a little bit of heat.
I received a copy of this e-book from the author/publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest opinion.
Cord is recovering from injuries he rec’d serving his country. He has lost a part of one of his legs and is determined to get better and go back into action. He lives with guilt though because many of his team died in an explosion and he feels he let them down.
An old acquaintance contacts him about a possible job. The man had a security company and needed someone to cover a job for him, for a person who had a stalker. Cord does it because he wants to show his commanding officer that he is ready to go back into the field.
Samantha was shocked when she found out that Cord was her Security. She felt she knew who was stalking her but it had to be proven and stopped.
Will he have another chance with Samantha? Will they stop the stalker?
Cord and Sam didn’t waste any time in starting a relationship but Cord did take his job seriously. He wasn’t going to let anyone take Sam from him.
I really liked this story. Cord was dealing with issues of guilt as well as the physical aspect of him losing half a leg. All he wanted to do was serve his country but he had to prove he was capable first.
Sam knew what she wanted also. She councilled servicemen returning to the US after serving overseas, for what I assumed was PTSD.
The end of the book bothered me a bit. I felt it ended abruptly, granted the story had reached it’s end.
I have read several books by this author and enjoy her writing very much. I would recommend this book.
Yoo-hoo! Another Men of Mercy book, my favorite series by Lindsay Cross with Operation Mayhem following closely on its heels. Cord’s Chance gives us a life changing wounded Cord. What is admirable from the first page on is his determination to not give up but like his friends, to continue to push himself in his recovery. Taking the protection detail is just one more “step” on his recovery, fit for service journey. However, it becomes another life changing event for Cord.
Sam Bishop is not in the least an old crotchy rancher. I loved the surprise of who she turns out to be instead of what Cord is expecting. Of course the chemistry between Cord and Samantha is hot and heavy as is expected in Ms. Cross’ books. Although there is an emotional intensity for Cord personally as he comes to grips with his changed body and flashbacks from how that all happened as well as he seeks a future still in the military. It is a story that tells it like it is for many injured veterans. Healing, recovery and finding purpose along with love is a story for all.
4.5 Stars
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
so good. I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy of Cord’s Chance. I really enjoyed reading this story. A wonderful action packed storyline, great characters. I read this in one sitting. a must read. I was on the edge of my seat . I highly recommend reading this story
A Wonderful Story!
This story is full of grit and determination. Cord has overcome a debilitating injury. His test is to go out in the field and see if he still has what it takes to prove that he can still be good enough to get back onto the Team. Meeting Samantha again gives him more to prove than his ability to protect his brothers, he has to save her life.
I love how this story gets right down to the nitty gritty with giving Cord the immediate challenge of making his way around a ranch full of people just like him. He has to overcome the pain and weakness in his leg while trying to keep his disability secret. This subject matter is quite interesting when he is trying to get back to perfect physical condition by running on his prosthetic leg. This story shows how Cord has to deal with so many obstacles regarding his leg each moment of everyday life.
I also enjoyed the attraction Cord and Samantha rekindled immediately and it didn’t stop there! There is also sweet, sexy stuff we all love to read about. As well as a dangerous turn in more ways than one. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I would have enjoyed a longer story but I was not disappointed in this one at all. Great job! I loved it!
