The last thing by-the-book Captain Mitch Lansing wants to do is work in a high school classroom to improve relationships between at risk kids and the police department. Mostly, he doesn’t want to deal with teenagers. But when he meets unorthodox teacher, Cassie Smith, his world goes off kilter. So does Cassie’s. She’s totally against all he stands for, so why is it she finds herself attracted to him? The further they go into the year, the more they’re drawn to each other. And the more the kids also come to care about Mitch. However, because of his past in Vietnam, he tries to distance himself from everybody. He can’t, and he must learn to accept Cassie and her kids into his life. With several highly emotional scenes and deeply moving situations, this story will go straight to your heart.
Praise for COP OF THE YEAR:
“Kathryn Shay writes from the heart! Her stories are about real people with real lives. You will laugh and cry with her characters. COP OF THE YEAR is sure to be one of the best books to hit the shelves this year!” The Literary Times
“Prepare yourself for a fabulous emotional ride that will have you reaching for the tissues and leave you with a renewed sense of hope.” Genie Romex Reviews
“Kathryn Shay has penned a most unusual novel. The teacher/cop relationship feels natural enough, and the dialogue is a standout. But oddly enough, though I found the romance to be satisfying, it’s the secondary characters of the kids I remember most from the story. The teenage pregnancies, the gang involvement, the drug usage all are a part of today’s high school scene, but Shay makes this a story of hope, not despair. The ending almost brought me to tears. Three cheers!” The Romance Reader
“Ms. Shay writes a strong and compelling dissertation on a very real and complicated social issue of our time, weaving in an unforgettable, touching love story.” Old Book Barn Gazette

As a former teacher, it was hard for me to believe that a school such as this would exist in the real world, but it was heartwarming to pretend that it might. What I would have given to have worked such a place. Shay’s fiction always gives the reader hope and possibilities.
It had Avery good plot. I enjoyed the read. Stayed up till 1:30 a.m. to finish it. Couldn’t put the book down ro finish reading it the next day. Elinore.
If I could give this 6 stars, I would. Cassie is a wonderful teacher. Mitch is struggling to keep his experiences in Viet Nam from controlling his life, and then there’s Johnny a teenager at risk who needs both of them. This whole series is wonderful. Read them all!
This is one of the best boos I’ve read in a long time. Interesting believable characters. A powerful message about healing and getting past disappointments.
I have read other books by this author and really liked them. I felt this one fell short. He is a cop working at the local high school where she is a teacher of at risk teens. I felt the classroom details weighed the book down. It just didn’t work for me
Great read
Loved the story and the characters! Became a fan of Kathryn Shay!
Hard to put down…especially if you know any veterans.
3.5 Stars, bumped to 4. This is the first book in the Bayview Heights series. It’s set in the 90s in the small NY town of Bayview Heights and centers around the high school there. While the story features a Vietnam vet, it isn’t “old.” It could just as easily insert an Iraqi war vet. It is interesting to get some history of Nam and the cultural …
Started slowly. High school out of my age range. Turned out learning much.
Beautiful
Cassie had her troubles growing up but because of her teacher Seth Taylor now high school principal she turned her life around and works with the at risk students at the school. Mitch has moved to Bayview to help a buddy who needs to replace a lost officer. Now they had work together.
Shay’s characters are very real with real life situations. Easy to read and enjoyable.
I will read any book by this author and have read several already. Once you start a book by this author you want to keep going until you finish.
Honestly felt like this book could have been so much more than it was. The characters were good, but it seemed like a former soldier, who had no desire to share his experiences of a war was pretty easily pulled into throwing everything out there. The psychology was not believable. Just not what it should have been for a story that could have …
I enjoyed this book very much. Inspirational for sure: Those who can, teach others how ( per the story line).
Love Shay’s writing. Believable characters, fun romance.

Related to the characters and enjoyed the storyline.
Enjoyed! A different twist on the usually predictable romance……
This book was action packed. It kept the reader interested.
