July Dupree and Dean ‘PD’ Hargrove fell head over heels in love. When PD comes home to tell July the good news about joining the SWAT team as a tactical medic, everything changes.July can’t fathom why PD would want to be a cop in this day and age. Wasn’t it enough that he already had a dangerous job with the fire department? Now he has to add another, even more dangerous, job to the equation? … equation? With so many cruel people in the world who make a sport out of hurting cops just because of the badge they wear, she has to make him understand. But when he refuses to listen to her reasoning, she feels she has no other choice but to issue an ultimatum: her or the SWAT team.
Dean doesn’t like ultimatums. He’s furious with July for putting him in the awful position of having to choose between a dream and her.
July never believes for a second that he’d choose the SWAT team over her, but she is wrong.
A year later, they’re both still in love with each other, but neither one is willing to budge regardless of their feelings.
July’s feelings for Dean haven’t changed, in fact her love for him has only grown. But seeing him living his life seemingly unaffected by the loss of what they had breaks her heart over and over each time she sees him.
Dean has a good poker face, though. He’s just going through the motions of his life until finally, the smoldering embers of his feelings erupt into a full-on blaze of emotion, burning through everything but his love for July. When the smoke clears, Dean wants to know if they can reignite the fire of their love or is he destined to live his life in a constant state of controlled burn?

PD has always come across as a bit of a smart ass, a perverted smart ass at that. July comes across as someone that is strong willed, but yet somewhat submissive in nature as well. when these two were together before they really didn’t try to communicate with each other in matters that they needed to. July has her reasons for her fears when it came to PD’s jobs, but they don’t talk things through before the towel is tosses in on their relationship. finally after a year apart they have stopped denying that they belong together. but, once they finally come together, July is taken and PD has to work with her brother Wolf and also some others from previous books to bring her back to him.
this one was a bit of an emotional roller coaster. but a ride well worth it. this one had moments that made your heart break and moments that made you mad at one or both of the main characters, along with some of the other characters in the book. but everything was done just right to enjoy this one.
Drew “PD” and July have had a rough go and Alexa didn’t help matters to get what she wanted which was PD. I loved July and how no matter what she kept going, Drew broke her heart but she wasn’t going to let him step on her dreams. I honestly loved PD is the first three books but in the beginning of this one I couldn’t stand him and how he kept hurting July. I loved how Wolf, July’s brother kept appearing and making sure she was okay. This is truly a book I will reread again and again. I loved it and I highly recommend this entire series. It’s SO FREAKING GOOD!!!
Starting off you wanna punch PD in the face for him being so stupid and blind and making the biggest mistake of his life. And July does not help by not explaining herself, she just runs away. But a year later both PD and July are still actively avoiding one another and their true feelings. Finally PD pulls his head it of his butt and goes after his girl.
Some crazy stuff happens towards the end of the book that you will have to find out for yourself by reading the book. It’s worth the read.
Goodness this is story I had been waiting for and I was not disappointed. Dean “PD” and July have the rockiest of roads, they were once an item but July thinks his job is dangerous. This takes them on a journey of self discovery, tragedy, letting go of insecurities, and a passion that will last them a life time. I loved this story.
Have been looking forward to the story on Dean (PD) and July. This is the story of two people who break up because July feels his job is too unsafe. However after a year the love they have for each other is as strong as ever but how do you recover from heart break when neither one of you will talk about the problems. I am a big fan of Lani Lynn Vale and I would have to say that in the Kilgore Fire series this would have to be my favourite couple. My only criticism would be that I needed a few more answers to some of the events that happened which I will not mention here because I do not want to spoil any of the drama and action from the book. One thing I will ask is Lani what did his tattoo say, it is driving me crazy not knowing??? This is a story that shows us how important communication is in a relationship because only if they had really talked in the first six months things might have been different. As for Alexa who features in the story, all I can say to July is you go girl. I also loved the crossover between this series and the Uncertain Saints. As per usual this book is full of moments that will have you laughing until you cry and then have you hot and bothered from the strong alpha male. One of the most emotional books to date and one that will have your heart in your throat and not sure whether you will recover from the storm that their story creates in your heart and soul.
Dean and July! I absolutely loved this read! The love, the uncertainty, the passion, and the tragity! Definitely kept me occupied.
This is the fourth book in the Kilgore Fire series. You don’t have to read them in order. They are stand alones. But you will definitely want to read all of them. I have loved each and every one of the books, and the characters. I couldn’t put this one down. I was even happy about my baby needing a 3am feeding because it gave me the excuse to read some more.
This is a second chance novel. Dean is a fireman/medic, but he is also part of the SWAT team. He is one of their medics.
July, is Wolfe’s younger sister. With what happened to Wolfe, I can understand her fears about Dean being on the SWAT team. Ultimately that’s what ended their relationship the first time.
It’s been a year since the breakup. You can see how much they love each other.
I love how stubborn July is. And how kinky and alpha Dean is.
Those scenes were H.O.T.!
There were a couple scenes that had me worried and tearing up. No, I won’t say which parts because I don’t want to give anything away. I will say I wasn’t expecting a certain thing to happen at all though.
With everything that July went through, I’m amazed at how strong she is. She definitely is gangsta. You’ll understand what I mean when you read this!
Now this wouldn’t be a Lani book if the quotes didn’t have me laughing.
“Dear Women, he does not want a new watch for Valentine’s Day. He wants you to dress like a slut, handcuff him to the chair, give him a blowjob. AND swallow. His wishes are really that simple.” ~ Words of Wisdom
“One does not simply walk past his woman in the kitchen and not smack her ass. If she’s there, and your hand is free, you do it.” ~ Man Code
“Do you think the guy that invented vibrators heard voices say, “If you build it, they will come?” ~Random Thoughts
Here is your PSA: This is part of a series, please read the previous stories before reading this…. in fact I think you should read all her books before you read this… as there is mention of things that happened in one of the other series… and lets just face it.. that’s crazy to read in the middle of a series.
July has been in love with Dean from the moment she met him, and for 6 months they had a good thing going… but with holding herself back at times and not telling Dean everything, she freaks out every time he has a call out with SWAT.
Dean LOVES being with a first responder and he feels that SWAT is also part of his calling, but July hates it, and he isn’t going leave his jobs. Catching the tail end of a conversation, July makes the tough choice of giving Dean what he needs, and its not her. A year later they are thrown back together, and both fight the attraction and love they feel for the other. Will they figure out a middle ground or just give up?
So right off the bat I wanted to cry and throat punch a heffer. These are things I found that only Lani Lynn Vale can bring out in me. July…. there is something about her character that makes me want to give her a big freaking hug. PD/Dean, I have a love hate with him… He jut proves that men are so clueless sometimes. Now this had a little something…. we will say different from the other books that Lani has written…. a bit more of the BDSM theme, and I LOVED it! In fact I want more from Lani that have the BDSM theme; I could totally see her rocking that! This book also proves that Lani is never predictable! 5 stars isn’t enough for this, like 20 stars!
Love July and PD. This is more of a second chance love story. I love this series. Can’t wait for more of the Kilgore Fire men.
Controlled Burn
Lani Lynn Vale
5 Star Review
I love this authors books. Every time a new one comes out I tell myself it won’t be as good as the last one, there is no way she can keep cranking out such great reads.
This is yet another winner; another story to make you sit up and take notice. I laughed, I cried, I was put through an emotional roller coaster ride that I can’t wait to take again. Great characters and a plot twist that I never saw coming. It was great “seeing” Wolf again and having a few Uncertain Saints in the mix.
Make sure you get this book.
