Dark Protectors – Book 4Sometimes You Mate For LifeKatie Smith is the best of her class, part of an elite hunting force trained to eliminate werewolves from the hills of Western Virginia. She’s good at it because she has the kind of focus and drive that won’t back down no matter how steep the odds. Call it southern sass. Whatever it is, there’s no denying her willingness to risk everything for … her willingness to risk everything for the only man she’s ever cared about–a man on the verge of losing his very humanity. . .

Again, again! Another good instalment in the series. So enjoyable to read about the well known characters again. Will be very interesting to see how it all ends.
After playing secondary characters since the very first book, Katie and Jordan get their story. And what an incredible story it was. I loved the non-stop action that unfolded from the beginning.
Katie is no longer the sweet young girl crushing on Jordan. Now she uses her dark gift to hunt down the scary things that go bump in the night. But Jordan is suddenly not the same either. Poison-dipped Kurjan darts leaving him anticipating that he will be consumed by the virus that turns males of his kind into werewolves by the time they see their next full moon. Jordan is quickly trying to set his affairs in order and one of the items- the biggest item is Katie.
In the midst of Jordan’s plans, Katie discovers she has a big creepy and lethal stalker. The stalker has ties to Jordan’s past which has suddenly come full circle to bite him in the butt. The clock is ticking to the next full moon and several people are doing the best they can to find a way to save Jordan. Katie has come to the conclusion that she needs to go on instinct and take a big chance if Jordan is to be saved.
Though the focus is on Katie and Jordan, the overall war continues with events moving forward. Jase has been captured by demons and Janie is older and coming into her own. All of the Kayrs show a strong presence in this one including the next generation in Garrett, Talen’s son. It was also cool to see Maggie, the wolf shifter and the big, bad Bane Council wolf, Terrent get some face time.
The plot on this one was full-throttle in its pacing whether it was the action scenes or the passion scenes with Jordan and Katie. There isn’t much in the way of background because it is assumed that the earlier books have been read. It just continues the existing story threads with focus on a new couple who are already established characters.
Like many series with multiple story threads, the further into the series you go the less time is spent even on the main couple. Sometimes this is a problem, but in this case I was okay with it. Jordan and Katie’s stuff was not really something that could be isolated since their story is just one part of the whole. But that doesn’t mean they get too little time for things to get hot and heavy. These two are great together. Katie has come into her own and Jordan can now see it. He thinks its all happening too late and tends to be fatalistic about it, but the new strong Katie just kicks that attitude to the curve, moves into his personal space and takes no prisoners. The alpha cat shifter has met his match in this female who won’t be dominated.
I’m also impressed how the main story arc is still clearly visible no matter how many smaller threads come into being. The war is still the focus as is the tension between the two sides.
There are a few different threads in the story that I am now very eager to pursue. Janie and Zane is high on my list, but now Maggie and Torrent have my attention. I also look forward to find out what happens with poor Jase.
Another fab installment in the series which by the by needs to be read in order. Paranormal Romance lovers should definitely give this series a try.
Finally! I have been anxious for Katie and Jordan to become a couple. Jordan has been the one pushing her away believing he was doing what was best for Katie. It wasn’t what he wanted, but what he felt he deserved.
Over the ten years spent apart, Katie’s feelings for Jordan never wavered. She grew up and decided she was done waiting on Jordan to make a move, and realized she was brave enough to make the move herself. With the virus, there was nothing for either one of them to lose.
Jordan and Katie are so very sweet together. The history they share and the closeness they have, kept a smile on my face while reading this book. There’s some good news and a lot of action that takes place, and it’s always fun seeing all the other characters from previous books. A new enemy is introduced in addition to the Kurjans and Demons storyline which has continued from the first book throughout the series. The plot among Janie, Zane and Kalin continues to get more and more interesting. I’m worried about Jase and what has happened. This has been a good series so far, so I’m excited to continue it.
UPDATE: Just re-read this after going back to hit the backlist. This is by far my favorite in the series to date.
Why didn’t anybody tell me about this series? Seriously. This was a really good paranormal romance. And it would have been undoubtedly even better if I had read the three books that came before it.
Katie is a cougar shapeshifter who has been in love with Jordan all of her life. But her pack-leader always treated her like the little girl she was when they first met. She left the pride 10 years ago, to help hunt shifters who had become infected with a virus that mutated them into beastly werewolves. Katie, herself, was hit by the virus, but for women, the result is an inability to shift.
Jordan always knew about Katie’s girlhood crush on him. It was part of the reason he let her go all those years ago… to see if the feelings would stand up over time and the distance. He thought there was plenty of time to see what would happen between them. He never counted on being infected with the werewolf gene himself. Now he has only days to get his affairs in order before he descends into madness. Part of that means getting Katie back to the safety of the keep.
Of course, once Katie and Jordan are back in each other’s orbit, there is no denying they are supposed to be together. The sexual tension is off the charts. The two of them want each other so much, but Jordan considers himself too damaged for Katie now. Sex could be dangerous and mating is completely out of the question. Katie wants Jordan any way she can have him. And what if mating could help him? So they’re in this tug of war, but at the center is real love –and a whole lotta lust. Once we do get to the sex, it’s really, really good. Primal and hot at times, gentle and loving in others. Everything I wanted.
There’s much more to the story. A werewolf targeting Katie. A war among supernatural species. A wealth of secondary characters, some carrying over stories from previous books, while others are laying foundations for books to come. It’s rich and fast paced. My only issue was that it was a lot to take in as a new reader, especially the history of the war and the virus. But I did get a good grip on it over time and it was worth the effort. If anything, it makes me want to go read the series backlist. I will definitely be reading the future books. I hope Katie’s feisty friend Maggie gets her story next!
Rating: B+
Great book in the aeries. Loved it!
4.5 stars
Katie and Jordan…finally!!! Although this is only book 4, I feel like I’ve waited forever for Jordan to get his head out of his booty and see that Katie is his mate.
This story is a time jump to 10 years in the future from the last book, Hunted. The author is great at showing us the wearing down the different groups have gone through over the years. Money is short, spirits are low, and the kids are growing up.
With the fast forward in time, Ms. Zanetti can do so much more with these characters. We can see a progression of the werewolves and how they’ve been dealt with through the years. Of course, Janie is now a teenager which brings a whole other level of interest to her relationships with Zane and Kellan. And Katie has been out hunting werewolves, out from under Jordan’s thumb and influence.
Somewhere within this story, I don’t remember exactly when, I knew what would need to be done to save Jordan. It shows what a master storyteller this author is that I not only still wanted to go along for the ride, but was also on the edge of my seat the closer it got to that full moon. I mean seriously, I absolutely KNEW they’d figure it out and what would happen. Yet there I was, yelling at the characters in my book because things were getting intense. Loving every minute of it, of course.
Not only do we get to see the HFN of Jordan and Kate, but there seems to be a new twist to Maggie’s character and a possible love match for her. And, of course, I can’t help but want to see more of Zane. And we still have the other Kayrs brothers to mate. Not to mention, the curiosity the author sparks about Kane and his hidden/secret ability. Plus, we still haven’t really met any of the demons yet. Ahhh! If it was feasible, I would seriously get every book in this series and just sit here for days on end reading one after the other. So good!

Katie and Jordan
This story is one of the ones I’ve been waiting to get to read after starting the series roughly a week ago!
Katie is a shifter but was infected with the virus the Kurjans created to affect mates. In an attempt to cure herself, she injects herself with the catalyst in the hopes of speeding up the virus and all it does is changes her to be able to sense werewolves and get into their minds. Ten years later, she is fighting with a team of shifters to take out werewolves, when Jordan stops by to ensure she goes to the Realm headquarters. Things escalate quickly, but when her team arrives they have one more surprise that is going to knock her for a six
I loved this story, obviously because I’d been waiting for Jordan and Katie to stop being so stubborn and get together but also the way the author has kept us in the loop with everyone. The characters are well developed, the story line flows well and as each story progresses I want to know more about these characters and where they are headed Also loved Maggie and Janie plus company’s antics which had me laughing at certain intervals.
Look forward to Janie and Jases’s stories! Hopefully Maggie will get a story too….I’m back to reading to find out
Another great book. Keeps you interested from start to finish. Shifters, vampeirs, demons continue the war between good and evil. Katie hasn’t been able to shift since being infected with a virus so she denies mating with Jordan thinking she isn’t good enough for him. Hot alpha males, strong women, twist and turns, hot sexy moments. Love that characters from pass books are included.
Consumed wasn’t at all what I expected. I was really looking forward to Jordan finally accepting the bond he had with Katie, and how that would play out. I was expecting a friends to lovers trope with a few obstacles (mainly Jordan) in the way. Instead the book starts out with an immediate 10 yr timeline jump. What? Katie and Jordan hadn’t seen each other for 10 years, which to me was completely unbelievable. But alright. I wasn’t a huge fan of the whole plot of the book, with what forced Katie and Jordan together. But the end I saw the necessity of it, and ultimately enjoyed it for what it was, but it was nothing like what I expected.
Katie Smith has been waiting for the day when she could finally act on her instinct and have Jordan Pride as her mate. Jordan has fought tooth and nail to keep his distance from being romantic with Katie, now that he has been infected with the werewolf virus, he is regretting that he never made a move on her.
Katie knows the only chance Jordan has against fighting the virus is if they mate, but the mating could kill her as well. Katie wont back down though when it comes to challenging Jordan to mate her, if it means saving his life she will do whatever she can to protect him. Katie doesn’t realize though that she has a stalker who plans to claim her for himself and if Jordan doesn’t step up he could lose her forever.
I have been waiting anxiously for Katie and Jordan’s story and although it was terrific, I felt like a bit of the spark that was so present in books 1 & 2 was missing a bit of it’s zing in this one.
This book takes place 10 years after the events in the previous book, Hunted. Katie is now a werewolf hunter and she still can’t shift to her cougar form. Jordan has now been infected with the virus and is fighting becoming a werewolf. The Kurjans attack headquarters with werewolves and do a lot of damage. In the process Janie is hurt and almost kidnapped.
A lot happens in this book. We have Katie and Jordan finally mating, a new push to find a cure for the virus, an attack on headquarters, and Jace is missing. I thought the romance between Katie and Jordan was pushed back by the overarching story in this one. They still were the main characters but their mating wasn’t even until about halfway through the book. I did enjoy their story though.
I can’t wait to see what will happen next, especially with Jace and Janie. I want to see what has been happening to Jace for the past two+ years and how he gets free. Janie is still getting visions but I want to see what she will do to end this war.
This was ok but not my favorite. I’m really not liking the books on the secondary characters that much. This storyline was really kind of lame. The next book is on a Kayrs brother so that should be a better read.
I have been waiting for Katie and Jordan’s story since book one. Talk about a sexy shifter romance. Rebecca Zanetti had been teasing me with sexual tension fulled bits of Katie and Jordan’s relationship since Fated. I yearned for this book and it was so much better than I hoped. So it’s been ten years since Katie has been infected with virus 27 causing her not to be able to shift. For the last ten years she has been hunting werewolves. Everything changes when the only man she ever loved, Jordan Alpha of the Pride, becomes infected with the virus. Now she will do anything she can to save him from changing into a werewolf and being killing by the next full moon in just a few days.
