“In this luscious alternative universe, sidekicks quote the Lone Ranger and Right inevitably triumphs with panache. What more could adventure-loving readers ask for?”—Publishers WeeklyOakland, 1946. Ex-soldier John Rolfe, newly back from the Pacific, has made a fabulous discovery: A portal to an alternate America where Europeans have never set foot—and the only other humans in sight are a band of … other humans in sight are a band of very curious Indians. Able to return at will to the modern world, Rolfe summons the only people with whom he is willing to share his discovery: his war buddies. And tells them to bring their families…
Los Angeles, twenty-first century. Fish and Game warden Tom Christiansen is involved in the bust of a smuggling operation. What he turns up is something he never anticipated: a photo of authentic Aztec priests decked out in Grateful Dead T-shirts, and a live condor from a gene pool that doesn’t correspond to any known in captivity or the wild. It is a find that will lead him to a woman named Adrienne Rolfe—and a secret that’s been hidden for sixty years…

If this is the last in the series it leaves a lot of loose ends. Love this series but in these later books he tends to spend more time telling us what everyone is wearing then he does moving the story line forward.
I enjoyed this book, a fun imagining of the SF Bay Area if Europeans had never arrived.
Couldn’t set it down
Interestingly written, too much effort spent on the flora and fauna, but the concept was intriguing.
Did not finish. Just became boring.
I’m a fan of Stirling so not surprisingly I found this enjoyable. It’s not groundbreaking but it’s certainly worth the read.
Hope for more on these characters. Love the strong woman, and the man who finds her his equal. Appreciated the descriptions of the land and the intelligent comments on agriculture and history
What a wonderful concept. This author never fails to entertain us completely. Wonderful writing.
Stirling at his best. A cheerful adventure in alternate history, with fetching women, venomous villains, interesting side characters, and a decent dollop of violence. Well worth a look.
A second Earth is always a good read.
Interesting take on ‘what if’. Like time travel but without the need for dealing with any conundrum problems. A bit wordy with the descriptions at times but a fun read.
Good character building. S.M. Stirling is an excellent writer who pays attention to what makes a story good.
I will always regret that there were no other volumes in this universe
Like everything Stirling has written, this is a stand-out!!! Hoping for many more books in this series!!!!
Read this book when it was first released and loved it. Have always regretted the fact that Mr. Stirling has never seen fit to continue what was obviously not a stand-alone book. Try it – you’ll like it.
Although easy to read generally, there were long segments of information thast I was tempted to skim.
Started off great, with interesting characters. Found the second half of the book one big slog, just a grinding out of the situation the author placed his characters in. Enjoyed other books by Stirling far more.
Tale of a WWII soldier who, shortly after his return from the Pacific theater, discovers a portal to an alternate earth… an earth where Europeans have never discovered North America! Totally fascinating.
Great concept, but the book was unreadable drivel. Endured a few chapters, and deleted it.
Very interesting and realistic once you accept time travel. 4 Stars because it’s very similar to the others in this series
