This book is YA, but it’s not a sugary sweet tale by any stretch of the imagination.
Jesaela, the poor faerie, is thrown into the clutches of the evil Lyssa. But is she really as awful as she appears?
Enter into this magickal world, full of dragons and fantasy beings.
But beware; who is friend and who is foe?
I love the means of travel, especially the portals. And the characters have depth and come to life with full force.
I don’t want to say who my favourites are, in case of spoilers. There’s some clever twists in this tale.
The author has woven the terrific world of Teralia with expert hands. I can see, smell and feel it all.
And dammit; I want more. NOW! Hopefully the next book won’t be too far away.
NB – there are some (not overly detailed) scenes of torture in this book.
But if you enjoy a good fantasy tale (no matter how far above the age of YA you are), then give this a read. You won’t regret it.
Because; dragons! 🙂
I can’t believe I finished it in one sitting! CJ Rutherford has woven such an amazing tale, I just couldn’t put it down. The setting… the characters… the unique storyline… I loved it all. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next book!
Ginger Sue and Dustin Spielberg were the perfect narrators for this book. I really hope to hear more from them.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
If you enjoy classic fantasy than this is the book for you. The mythology and the world building are solid and fascinating and Jes is a unique and interesting character. If you are a fantasy buff check this book out.
I am so happy that CJ Rutherford made another series in his amazing fantasy world of Teralia! His first series, Tales of the Neverwar, was fantastic and a series I highly recommend. I have no doubt this series will be just as good. His choice of narrators for this series is perfect! Unfortunately the female narrator from the first series doesn’t narrate this series. But… fortunately for the author, the new female narrator, Ginger Sue, sounds almost identical to the previous narrator and does an outstanding job with each of the character voices! The male narrator, Dustin Spiehler, does an excellent job as well! I can’t wait for book 2!
This grabbed me from the very beginning and I couldn’t put down. What a great beginning for a series. I’m ready to read the second book, the moment it’s available.
This was exactly what I needed. “What does it say, this prophecy?” Hoggan waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. “Oh, it was a scroll written an age ago, with your usual vague mumbo jumbo. You know the sort. A savior will find the keys to unlock the bindings of the curse. That’s the short version by the way.”
How can a faer girl, young at 100, be the key to unlock a curse? How can being made a companion to a sadistic Princess be a calling to save the world? Much like many high fantasy, a young neophyte to generational evil is the focus of the magic of change. Forced to be an adult, she learns how love can be sacrifice as well as wonderful depending on how it’s perceived.
Cliffhanger alert! This book reads very quickly, and ends abruptly, wanting the author to quickly finish the next in the series. Highly recommended. One of my top books of 2018. 5+/5
