Against the backdrop of an elegant Cornwall mansion before World War II and a vast continent-spanning canvas during the turbulent war years, this involving story tells of an extraordinary young woman’s coming of age, coming to grips with love and sadness, and in every sense of the term, coming home…In 1935, Judith Dunbar is left behind at a British boarding school when her mother and baby … baby sister go off to join her father in Singapore. At Saint Ursula’s, her friendship with Loveday Carey-Lewis sweeps her into the privileged, madcap world of the British aristocracy, teaching her about values, friendship, and wealth. But it will be the drama of war, as it wrenches Judith from those she cares about most, that will teach her about courage…and about love.
Teeming with marvelous, memorable characters in a novel that is a true masterpiece, Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher is a book to be savored, reread, and cherished forever.

This is my all-time favorite book. It’s got a hint of romance (definitely a ‘sweet’ read), but it’s an epic saga of one woman growing up through WWII. The trials of life are poignant, real and Ms. Pilcher does the most amazing job developing a whole world of characters. I read this book again and again.
Well, goodness – what a huge doorstep of a book! Over 1,000 pages, which took me more than a month to read. Just as well I loved it.
As with many of Rosamunde Pilcher’s books, Coming Home is set in Cornwall (the reason I chose it, you’ll recall, if you read my blog, because I was going on holiday there), which is where Ms Pilcher was born and …
Couldn’t put the book down. Spell bound from beginning to end
There aren’t enough stars. I’ve only recently discovered Rosamunde Pilcher’s amazing fiction. Her world and character building skills inspire me to work more diligently and dig deeper in my own fiction. This book is a perfect example of how she surrounds the reader with all the sensory details to immerse the reader in the story world of England …
Wonderful historical fiction of Britain just before and during WWII as experience by a young girl approaching womanhood. My favorite Rosamund Pilcher – and she’s one of my favorite authors.
So well written. Great story and characters.
One of my favorite authors, this book is a great reaf!
Whenever I get asked to name my all time favorite book…this is the one. On my 3rd copy!
I love all of Rosmund Pilcher’s books. I get completely immersed in the story and feel like I’m part of her family
Family affected by ww2
I have read a lot about WW2, mostly non fiction but a few excellent fictional portrayals such as Marge Piercy’s Gone to Soldier. This book did not meet the standard set by the non fiction books about this historical period.
This is my favorite of all Rosamunde Pilcher books. It’s a long and very descriptive story, yet I still didn’t want it to end. Pilcher us such a wonderful writer that when you read her stories you feel as if you have stepped inside the book into another world.
Always writes a great story
I loved this book. The descriptions were amazing. They give you a real feel of the areas.
Read it awhile ago
Another wonderful story from the author. After reading The Shell Seekers, I waited 5 years for this novel, and managed to stretch out the reading to almost a week – wanted it to last as long as possible.
My favorite Rosamunde Pilcher book — it’s a coming-of-age story set in WWII. Tragic, sweet, and gripping, with incredibly strong character development. I’ve read this book three times, and plan to read it again in the future.
Amazing saga set in the years leading up to, and during, World War II. Filled with Rosamund Pilcher’s lovely and quirky English and Scots characters, this novel tells the story of Judith Dunbar and her family and friends, and what happens to each as they weather, and sometimes fight the war. Character development and scene-setting are Pilcher’s …
I love Pilcher’s writing style, and this story does not disappoint
Very rich characters and wonderful story.
