Coming Alive turned out to be far more of an emotional read than I expected. Avery knew loss. They had an up close and personal relationship. It seemed that everyone she cared about, everyone she could possibly love, would die. Born into suffering, she had many chances at happiness and each one was snatched away well before its time. Then she meets Logan. The connection she felt to him, the same one he felt to her, could not be denied. But she tried. She knew that whatever she had felt before would be nothing compared to what she’d feel for him. So she tried to protect herself. You can’t suffer if you don’t know what you’re missing, right? Too bad Logan wasn’t letting her go.
I loved the way the friendship/relationship grew between Logan and Avery. He had his own issues from his past that left him jaded and distrustful of women. He believed that he’d live his life as a confirmed bachelor with a different woman warming his bed every night. All those thoughts go out the window when he catches a glimpse of Avery. She made him realize what it was to love and be truly loved. She gave him reasons to dream. Their bond was the stuff dreams are made of.
I really enjoyed this story and I’m glad I took a chance on this new-to-me author. She won my heart with the first book of her Welcome to Carson series and I’ll definitely be back for more.
Avery & Logan are stuck; whether its stuck in their past or stuck in their grief they are both weighed down by their life experiences & some serious traumatic events that they’ve both lived through. This is Avery’s journey to change and start anew and Logan’s fight to overcome his fears. When these two meet it’s instant chemistry & friendship; you can’t help but root for them while they find their happily ever after. You will fall in love with not only Avery & Logan but all these characters in Carson; I can’t wait to see what Renee Harless has in store for us next!
I loved this book! At parts I felt like I was a crying mess feeling all of Avery’s pain and heartbreak and other times I was so happy and swooning over her and Logan! The story was beautifully told. I loved how you could feel the connection and chemistry between the two characters. Beautiful, sexy and emotional ride! I can not wait to read more from Renee Harless!! Highly recommend reading this book!
This is the first book I’ve read by Renee Harless and can’t wait to read more.
Avery has given up on finding her happily ever after. She doesn’t want anymore relationships, with everything she’s been through in the past…
She decides to move away and stop with a friends sister. Has a interview for a new job and is looking forward to a fresh start…
Logan had a rough childhood and even worse luck with women. He doesn’t want a relationship and is happy with having one nightstands. That is, until he meets Avery…
This book really pulled at the heartstrings. I laughed, cried and had so many emotions while reading. Really enjoyed this book
After too many heartbreaking losses in her life Avery Poindexter has taken more of a sheltered approach to life as of late, mainly because she has this fear that every time she lets someone in, they are destined to leave her in death. But little by little her friends are starting to pull her out of her protective little bubble, and getting her to rejoin the outside world again, even convincing her to move to a new town for a fresh start. She is hoping her new start, in a new town, will give her a chance to heal without the constant reminders of her past at every turn, and give her a chance to rebuild a new life for herself… what she doesn’t expect it to give her is love!
After a bad history with women Logan has developed a mistrust for them that runs deep, he has no trouble spending the night with them, but that is where is ends. No strings, relationships, feelings, or attachments, unless there sex related of course, one night of fun and then the good doctor is gone. But when he meets the alluring new nurse at his office, his little plan takes a hit, she is beautiful, and has this special way of pulling him into her orbit. And before long he is doing everything he can to be near her, even if it goes against everything he believes in…
The moment I started this heart-wrenching read I was completely hooked, it grabbed a hold of me and had me flying through the pages, in search of what I hoped to be a well deserved happily ever after for Avery, and I have to say I am happy with what I found. This well crafted story line was engaging, passionate, and packed with raw emotion that literally took my breath away! It’s one of those reads that will hit you deep, and have you feeling the punch intended behind every word printed on the page, and is sure to linger in your thoughts long after the last page is turned!! I highly recommend you give this read a try, it is sure to take you on one truly exceptional literary escape, and renew your faith in happily ever afters!!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
I am still wondering how to write this review. While I loved Avery and Logan and their story, the book just didn’t work for me. There were parts in the book that lagged and others that went too quickly.
Avery and Logan are two lost souls not really looking for “partner”. Both have issues and come from dysfunctional families (and holy cow are they ever). I wanted these two to face their fears and insecurities together and be able to put their pasts behind them. This book did contain lots of emotional feelings and Avery and Logan had to fight their way to the top. I especially loved the “family twist” in the storyline and didn’t see that one coming!
There are really two major (for me) instances where I felt the book took a dive. The first one is when Logan comes home and finds Avery and Austin huddled around the table and he immediately accuses them of cheating behind his back – kicks Avery out – and the next minute they are all lovely dovey? Nope…I know this is a book of fiction, but come on, not even five minutes later all is well? The second is when the table is turned and Avery accuses Logan of cheating and then he immediately asks for her hand in marriage? Nope…that just didn’t work for me. At least let the characters stew for a day or two and grovel for a bit. Not this “Oh..Im sorry, now we can have make-up sex” two minutes after the accusing started.
Coming Alive is the first book in the “Welcome to Carson Series” by Ms Harless. I most likely will continue with this series as I would like to know what happens between Austin and Nikki.
Coming alive.. that is a great title .. This is a brand new author who I never heard of or read before this book!
Second before you start reading grab a box of Kleenex as you will need them! I did!
Now, while this is a sad story it also shows so much more. The plot is strong if not a bit heavy handed on the sexual scenes.
Only thing I have a issue with is why would she agree to marry him as she is leaving him. I would demand answers before saying yes not afterwards.
The author also has a few spots that need an editor but otherwise its a very well written moving story.
Renee Harless definitely didn’t disappoint with Coming Alive as her start to the Welcome to Carson series. I loved Avery and Logan’s story! I was a little confused at the beginning but quickly followed along with the story. Avery pulled at my heart strings from the beginning and kept me hooked all through the end. I just had to read this book in one sitting and couldn’t put it down.
Avery goes through so much pain and loss in her life that now she tries to keep everyone at arms length. Abandoned by her mother and and an unknown father, she’s left with her grandmother, who has never shown her an once of affection and has her hidden with the help forcing her to live as a servant. As soon as she turns 18, she leaves to never look back and takes the only 2 people that are important to her to start a new life. But a fresh start doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easier. Going though life’s toughest hurdles she decides to stay in the shadows and just focus on working hard. Until her best friend convinces her to start again in the town of Carson where she meets Logan.
Logan is a doctor who doest trust women or believes in relationships. Abandoned by his own mother too and fighting his own dark past, he doesn’t even try to get attached. Until he meets Avery. He’s left mesmerized and finds it hard to stay away, even when all she wants is to stay friends.
Moving to Carson has its own challenges for Avery and secrets from her past come to light. Will she find the strength to pursue anything with Logan knowing she feels just as strongly for him? Will either of their pasts get in the way or will they both be able to over come them?
I totally recommend this book to anyone who loves a good cry, crazy hot chemistry with some steamy scenes, and a hot doctor that’ll make you swoon. Coming Alive is the first book in the series, but is a standalone with its own HEA and epilogue. Not only will you enjoy this story but won’t get enough. I know I can’t wait to start the next book and see what Renee comes up with next.
Avery has dealt with heartbreak and loss her entire life. She feels that she is unworthy of love and she decides that a fresh start is what she needs. Hopefully she can find what she is looking for in “Coming Alive,” the first book in the Coming to Carson Series by Renee Harless. In Avery’s short life she has lost four people she loved, including her younger sister. She feels she is her “own grim reaper.” Of course this is not the case, but she is determined to avoid any personal relationships.
When Avery is late for an interview at the local medical center due to a bus accident, she bumps into Logan, one of the doctors at the center. He yelled at her for being late, but after she explained the situation, he apologized and offered to drive her home. This is the beginning of an intense and deep connection that develops between Avery and Logan. “There is an intensity between them when they are in close quarters” — Avery can tell when Logan is near her, even when she can’t see him. One night, they both have the same troubling dream. She is scared to love and trust again, so she tells him they can only be friends.
Logan was abandoned by his mother at birth and was raised by an abusive father. He was determined to make something of himself and was awarded full scholarships to both college and medical school. He had a history of bad relationships that left him angry. That all changed when he met Avery, and he knew in an instant that she would be important.
Can Avery and Logan emerge from the darkness of their pasts and come together in love and happiness?
I truly love this book. I have read it three times and it just gets better. “Coming Alive” is full of compassion and romance and I look forward to reading Renee’s next work, “Coming Consumed.”
Coming Alive is a sweet romance that I know you will enjoy! Avery and Logan both have had it hard growing up and have suffered many disappointments so this is a case of burdened souls being drawn to each other and finding healing in the relationship that they are building. The end result is love and family.
This is the first book I have read by this author. This book was astounding. The type of book where you get so into that the characters seem like real people. I laughed and I cried. I HIGHLY recommend reading this book. I can’t wait to read Austin and Nikki’s story
