A 2021 Hugo Award Finalist! A 2021 Locus Award Finalist! Amazon’s Best of 2020 So Far The fifth installment in New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire’s award-winning Wayward Children series, Come Tumbling Down picks up the threads left dangling by Every Heart a Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones When Jack left Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children she was carrying the … Bones
When Jack left Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children she was carrying the body of her deliciously deranged sister–whom she had recently murdered in a fit of righteous justice–back to their home on the Moors.
But death in their adopted world isn’t always as permanent as it is here, and when Jack is herself carried back into the school, it becomes clear that something has happened to her. Something terrible. Something of which only the maddest of scientists could conceive. Something only her friends are equipped to help her overcome.
Eleanor West’s “No Quests” rule is about to be broken.
Again.

It’s impossible to explain how special these books are. Maybe objectively they do deserve those five star ratings, maybe I should just start giving them. I can’t stop talking about these books, I want everyone who knows me to read these books and I want McGuire to write an endless supply of these books, so I will always have new worlds to discover and new characters to be friends with. It’s impossible to wait a week to read the next book. So, I picked it up now.
Although I love exploring new worlds, I always start smiling when I realize that we’re gonna catch up with the entire group again for an adventure and quest in one of their worlds. In this case the smile only brightened when I discovered that we were gonna return to the world of Jack and Jill, of Vampires and Mad scientists. It might be the most interesting fictional(?) world I have ever read about and I hope that somehow McGuire will find a way to set another book there.
I really enjoyed watching the characters who don’t feel at home in this world trying to make sense of it. Even Christopher, who at least longs for a world much like this one, seems a little out of place. Watching those characters in each other’s worlds is a great way of showing us how all those worlds only open their doors to people who truly belong there and it’s showing how unique and tight that fit is. People don’t belong in a world much like something. They only belong in their world.
On top of that I really enjoyed the plot. I think this story was coming for quite some time. We know that death is quite meaningless in this world, which also leads to endless circles of the same pain and hurt repeating and happening again. This story is the story of one girl who needs to break one of those circles in the most heartbreaking way possible. This story is the story of her friends still loving her, monster or not.
Welcome back to The Moors my fellow readers. Where lightning holds power and the dead come back to life. Jill has stolen Jacks’ body in her obsession to become a vampire. And the OCD Wolcott twin now stuck in Jill’s body is slowly going insane. Unless Jack can reclaim her body, she will die her final death. It’s time for the wayward children to embark on another quest.
Seanan McGuire has added even more diversity into her series by including characters that use their own form of ASL. I love how each new book adds to the inclusive cast of characters. Wayward Children encompasses people from all walks of life. And as you immerse yourself in this fantastical series, you also see how the various worlds accept people for who they are.
We all know the Moors to be dark and foreboding. But the cast of characters that find themselves questing in this Frankenstein inspired world are unique. How can you not laugh at Sumi’s nonsense logic in a logical world? And how about Cora’s innocent and wary attitude when approaching anything new? Combine that with Kade’s leadership and dedication, alongside Christopher’s familiarity with the undead in his world of Mariposa. I couldn’t help but laugh at their antics as they compared the Moors to their versions of weird versus normal.
Come Tumbling Down was another terrific addition to the Wayward Children series. I love the intense dark fantasy undertones, and the imagination that goes into each of these worlds. The ties of friendship or rivalry that bind all these children together are so craftily written. I never want this series to end.
Come Tumbling Down
(Wayward Children #5)

I loved this book! Jack is back and in Jill’s body! The vampire is going to use Jack’s body to turn Jill into a vampire. This is such an awesome story! Jack and her girlfriend show up at the Wayward Home through a doorway and seek help. The teens agree and follow Jack back through to the Moors where they have strange experiences, one after another! Loved it!
Read these books in order!
I was so happy to see Jack again. I also loved going back to the Moors. It’s so dark and creepy! It was also great to see some of the other characters I know and love. I cannot wait to read the next one.
With this story, we get to read the continuation to Jack and Jill’s story on the moors. I was intrigued by their story early on and could not imagine this is where it would go. Again the comraderie between the Wayward Children is heartwarming to read as they each jumped into assisting on this new adventure.
Another awesome Wayward Children book! I love the detail of the Moors and, that we’ve gotten to visit more than once in the series. It lends a lot of depth to this world.
There’s mostly the same characters in this one, and the book develops them all in little ways. I will say this particular story almost felt a little rushed through the “quest” because we already know so much about the Moors. Still, we do get some new locations, and little more explanation of how it works. Very interested to see what comes next!
I don’t have words for this installment. It’s soooo good!
It went by so quick, yet so much plot was covered, and I am questioning if this is the last we’ll hear from these characters.
The character arcs for Jack & Jill are shocking yet not. I mean we knew all along who the real monsters of the moor were right? I loved the development of all of the other children waiting for doors. We get more insight into their personal struggles, and the worlds they are waiting for.
Seanan Mcguire reads this audiobook and it has mean wondering if Jack and Jill are her favorite characters. The emotion she gives the words is fantastic. If you are able, it’s worth hunting down the audiobooks.
Can’t wait to read the next installment, excited to find out where it takes us next. Another door? The school? A new character? The way this series is laid out, makes it all the more magical.

What a story! I loved being back in the Moors, following Jack and Jill, and continuing to learn more about every one else.
Sumi stole a lot of the show here for me. Every scene she was in just added such vibrancy. I love her so much.
This was definitely the darkest book in the series so far, and of course I loved it! I think this one is officially tied with the first book as being my favorite.
The Moors in all its creepy whimsy, just calls to me.
I’m always depressed when I finish a Wayward Children book because it means I have to wait another year for the next installment. This was a great read. I really enjoyed being back in the nightmare that is The Moors, hoping that Jack can get her body back from her wicked twin sister, Jill.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the next book takes us to Mariposa, though. I would love to explore Christopher’s world, and given all that the did to help Jack and Alexis in The Moors, I definitely think he deserves his door and a chance to go back to his skeleton girlfriend.
The Wayward Children Series is one of my most favorite book series EVER, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Grimm style fairy tales, or the weird and disturbing.
Probably my favorite installment so far.
If you follow this series then you probably thought we had heard the last of twins Jack and Jill but thankfully the author had yet another magical, imaginative and terrible story to tell. This time Jack needs help. because she’s now in Jills body ! I will divulge no more because this as usual is a warped joy to read and I’m only rating this a four because I wanted it to be longer. Characters who will surprise and delight you. A story that for some ends happily and I cannot praise this fabulous series enough.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
