Based on a beloved ten-part series in the San Francisco Chronicle, Come Back, Como is Steven Winn’s tender and hilarious memoir of his uncommonly rich experience with a dog who wanted nothing whatsoever to do with him. With humor and pathos, Winn describes the exasperating but ultimately rewarding effects the pet had on his family, the ordeals he and his dog endured together, and the greatest … and the greatest lesson Como taught him: that loving a dog can somehow make us more human.

HAVING HAD DOGS ALL MY LIFE INCLUDING A MALE WOLF, ( THE HARDEST DOG TO GET TO KNOW BUT SINCE HE LOVED ME HE TAUGHT ME HOW TO LOVE A WOLF) I HAVE LEARNED MUCH TO MY SURPRISE WHEN WE COME TOGETHER WE LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH MORE
I’m 85 & missing the dog who died last fall, a 15 year old toy poodle. I cannot run & play as I did when she was a puppy, so I’ve thought of adopting a somewhat older dog, still small enough to cuddle. The book made me aware of the limitations of such an adoption and my increased age. I’m still looking around.
Cute but not great.
I learned from this book that I had deep emotions for my own dog that I had not realized before. In essence it awoke in me how important my pet has become in balancing my life. Next to my wife she is my silent best friend.
Entertaining, fast reading book
It was just a fun book. Goes to show, animals have personalities and problems. Really enjoyed every page of it. Just ended up wanting more.
I thought it was boring…too many sidetracks
Sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes smug. I cheered for the fog more than the author.
Great book , good Humor and I learned a lot. I recommend this book to animal lovers all over.
I enjoyed it overall, but found it a bit slow starting.
It was a little repetitious at times and I liked the story even though the writer maybe should have chilled out & let the dog just be a dog rather than seeming so terrified about every possible situation. He ended up really loving the dog so things worked out for everyone.
I enjoyed the book. I love animals but this little dog was psycho. I have to hand it to his owner to have the patience to help Como overcome his many problems. I am not sure if I could have lasted, and I know for a fact that my husband would not have put up with Como’s behavior. I did learn a few things about dog psychology.
This was a delightful read. I love any books with dog characters and this was priceless. Highly recommended.
I thoughtful this was a delightful story. I loved the way it was told, and happy he and Como eventually came together. I wanted to hear more about all of them!!
Owning a rescue dog is often not for the faint of heart or the short on patience! This rescue story has quite a few parallels with my dog, Scooter’s history. He was 4 years old, and had no social skills except the flight response! If you have a rescue that came to you with significant damage, it is reassuring to read a book like this!!
If you have ever loved a dog, you will understand what happens in this book. I found it very easy to read and very easy to relate to.
I could identify with the stress of dealing with a dog you love, but who is a handful and a strain on one’s resources. Como was a shelter dog two parents got for their daughter. He got along effortlessly with the wife and daughter, but he harbored a terrible fear of men. This coupled with some destructive tendencies spelled disaster. I felt sorry for all involved.
Just a really, really fun read………must love dogs!!
Tedious read. The author’s daughter sounded like a snotty child.
Not what I anticipated. Deleted
