Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others–but her days of helping military personnel are over. She’s got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she’s not equipped to take on more. Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his … way–terrorists, bombs, bullets. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.
Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn’t there–but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can’t take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he’s not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.
When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack–and that her secrets go even deeper than his own–Asher vows to protect her no matter what.

Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason is a story that left me saying, “WHOA!” It was the perfect escape I needed. The storyline pulled me in from page one and wouldn’t let me go. This is one of those Romantic Suspense stories where I held my breath almost the entire time and it kept me turning pages long after I should have been in bed. Brooke and Asher are great protagonists. I appreciate how relatable they are. No, I’ve never been in the military and I don’t have crazy murderers coming after me, but I do know a thing or two about trauma and PTSD. Brooke and Asher each experience their own terrors and handle the aftereffects differently, but they deal with their PTSD in relatable ways. I like their honesty and vulnerability with one another. And, I love how their relationship grows from partners trying to figure things out, to real friendship, to love. As crazy as their adventures are in this story, the pacing of their romance is pretty darn perfect. And speaking of adventures, again all I can say is, “WHOA!” The action in this story is almost non-stop. There are some moments so full of tension and suspense I truly had to remind myself to breathe. This is one Romantic Suspense novel that I wholeheartedly recommend!
I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on November 30, 2020, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Lynette Eason is an author that is new for me, her latest book Collateral Damage is the first novel in a new suspense series. There were plenty of twists and turns, in addition to some romance. The two MC’s are dealing with PTSD, and they supported one another whilst their families were not supportive of them at all. PTSD is very much real and I thought Eason covered this subject rather well.
While I did like the premise, I do not really feel this particular story was for me. However, I would recommend this book to those of you that enjoy military, and law enforcement conspiracies.
I just finished this book and was amazingly thrilled with it. I usually don’t like stories that are not Christian but I will be reading all of her books in the future. Can’t wait for the next in the series…
“Collateral Damage” by Lynette Eason is the first book in her new “Danger Never Sleeps” series, and I have to say that I am thrilled to have discovered it. The action rarely stops, and when it does, the reader needs the break almost as much as the characters!
This is a Christian Romantic Suspense title, and it lives up to the genre in all three senses of the phrase. The two main characters are Christians, as evidenced by the way they often say a quick silent prayer when they find themselves in dangerous situations. One character in particular regularly prays for the safety of the other. Both characters provide great role models for living out your faith in your everyday life, especially if yours is a dangerous one.
The romance is also nicely done. The two main characters had known each other during their military service, and reconnected once both are back in the United States. Of course, their meeting up again occurs at exactly the same time that all of the dangerous stuff starts happening, so they are thrown together much more often (and for much longer) than they would have been in the normal course of events.
Another reason that this book stands out for me is the dialog. Brooke and Asher actually talk to each other… a lot! The reader can easily understand how the attraction between them grows, as we see them really getting to know on another in the midst of the danger.
As for the suspense part of the story….it’s excellent! The storyline starts with something that happened in Afghanistan and affected both characters. It continues as the bad guys move to cover up their nefarious activity by eliminating threats to their secrets. There is never a dull moment, and the reader is taken along on a crazy thrill ride along with Brooke and Asher. On a related note, the action is always logical, and feels like it could actually happen in real life. Asher, in particular, is very resourceful, but never pulls off any feats of strength or MacGyver-like creativity that left me doubting a real person could actually manage them.
Basically, I enjoyed every aspect of this story. It has plenty of believable action, plenty of prelude to the characters falling in love, and just the right amount of Christian content. All in all, I highly recommend this book!
Five out of five ultra-fine slices of the best ultra-sharp cheddar!
Brooke Adams, former military psychiatrist, has left the military after nearly being killed by a bomb blast. She is now in private practice when she meets former Army Special Ops Sergeant Asher James. He has an appointment at her office but arrives to find the receptionist has been murdered. After pictures of Brooke are posted as she comforts a dying soldier, Asher knows that Brooke was the original target. Brooke’s house is searched, but she has no idea what the enemy is looking for. She and Asher team up with FBI Special Agent Caden Denning whose sister, Sarah, was stationed in Afghanistan with Brooke. Sarah is currently investigating strange happenings at a Afghan orphanage. Ms. Eason blends the three storylines of this amazing book and brings them together in a most suspenseful and satisfying ending. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason is the first in the Danger Never Sleeps series. My interest was captured from the very first chapter. Brooke Adams and Asher James are complex characters. Brooke is a woman who got burned out while helping military personnel and then harmed in the explosion. She held a man’s hand while he died and has a last item to give his wife along with a message. Brooke is suffering from PTSD and is dealing with it the best way she knows how. Asher James has been discharged from the Army and is having trouble dealing with the nightmares. Asher is a man who prefers not to reveal his feelings, but he believes Brooke is the one person he can talk to because she understands what he is going through. Asher rescued Brooke from the restaurant, so they have had similar experiences. The last thing Asher expects to find is a dead body in Brooke’s office. They experience an immediate connection which grows deeper as they evade the killers. The mystery was multifaceted. I do not want to say too much and give anything way. I like the complexity of the crime and how it was revealed bit by bit. I enjoyed figuring out who was involved and what they were up to. There are surprising twists and unexpected revelations. I especially liked the action which kept the story moving along at a fast pace. The author created such a delightful villain. I like how Christianity was incorporated into the story. The romance did not dominate. It developed as Brooke and Asher worked to stay alive and get the bad guys. There are quite a few characters and it can be hard to keep track of them at times. I enjoyed how everything came together at the end and I am looking forward to the next installment in Danger Never Sleeps series. Collateral Damage is an intense Christian suspense that you will not want to put down.
I borrowed this book as an audiobook from my local library. Lynette Eason did a great job writing this book which includes drama and suspense. Military personnel are injured and some killed in a bomb blast. Afterward both Asher James and psychiatrist Brooke Adams are discharged and return home to attempt to assimilate into civilian life. He decides to seek her out to gain help with his PTSD only to find her secretary has been murdered, and her life in danger. They end up sticking together and trying to figure out why they are being attacked with help from the local authorities and a friend’s brother who is with the FBI. A very interesting book, and I would highly recommend reading it. The narration in the audio book is great.
Living in a military area with many military friends it was great to take a glimpse into their world. This was an easy read, read like a it could be made for TV. I liked that there was an undertone of genuine faith in God. I have the sequel on my list.
Can’t wait to read the next in the series!
This is a very informative story about the emotional toll war takes on many soldiers who are in or near combat zones. The after effects, such as PTSD, are heartwrenching. The horror of
human trafficking for the purpose of harvesting and selling body organs for transplant is also brought to light. Overall a very worthwhile read.
Great plot. Well written
Definitely a page turner! This is the first book I’ve read that covered organ trafficking. Horrible but real! I had to buy the rest of the series!
This author writes such well-researched books with characters that are so real. This book had me fully engrossed from beginning to end, unable to put it down. From Afghanistan to the US, from love to murder, from vulnerable children to the unthinkable crime, this book has it all. I SO recommend it!
Wow!!! A very good book! I like the suspense….the edge of your seat reading! You just don’t want to stop reading. So intriguing. I loved the characters. I enjoyed this one so much I went on to the next one and getting ready for the third! This is an awesome series!!!
I enjoy Christian Suspense and this one fits the bill.
