I loved this book. The evolution of the characters is very well done.
Love this author have red all the books in this series.
What an absolutely elaborate and magical world the author has created with Cold-Hearted Rake and The Ravenels series. I loved it! There were so many wonderful details and incredible characters that made this story exciting and fun to read. It was truly fantastic!
Lisa Kleypas is back. In this first volume of the The Ravenels series, we are introduced to the characters that will be part of this series, each with its own book. Devon is a libertine who likes his carefree life. Until he inherits a title he did not want and responsibilities that are beyond his reach. With the death of his cousin (a person he did not like) he is the new Count of Trenear, responsible for a debt-ridden state, which he has no money to pay, and three young cousins with no trace of good manners and a young widow countess who is not afraid to impose herself, and strikes head-on with Devon.
And as he tries to figure out a way to save it all and put his life back on the original tracks, Devon gradually becomes enchanted by Kathleen’s strong, determined personality, wondering if perhaps a Duchess by his side it would not be what he needed.
Devon is a good male character, well in the mold of the good guys of Lisa Kleypas. He is a seducer who leads a torn life, but that little by little is changing and ends up completely in love. His trajectory throughout the book goes through a growth, a maturation. At first, he does not care about what he inherited, he wants to sell everything and return to the city, but as time goes on and he understands the functioning of the property, he realizes that several families depend on him and start trying to find ways to save his land. Of breaking, the conviviality with his new family, makes that he ends up being fond of the girls.
Several characters are part of the story, dividing the attention with the main couple. And everyone in their own way is interesting. We have Helen the eldest, the twin Cassandra and Pandora, West, Devon’s brother and Winterborne, his friend. I confess that I am curious as to how the story of Helen and Winterborne will unfold.
As for the protagonists of this volume, Kathleen and Devon, we accompany all that initial hatred to give way to love. This journey is interesting to accompany, it is believable, it has funny moments, tender moments and many fights on the way. Kathleen woke me up with mixed feelings. She is a young, strong woman who does not fall prey to circumstances, with a great maternal instinct, but who never knew what was love and affection, because she had no parents who cared for her. The circumstances of the first time she saw Devon were not very pleasant, which is why they spend most of the book fighting and arguing, which contributes to the couple’s charm. But she is so stubborn, irritating at times, she is always right, she does not hear anyone, and in the end, when she intrudes on Helen’s questions to me, it was the confirmation of how irritating she is.
Lately I’ve come across male characters better than female characters. I do not know why, but the female characters are becoming annoying in several books. The line between strong and boring personality is increasingly merging.
The book is well written, has many characters, but all inserted in a way that makes sense of the plot, everyone has their space and their own stories, but everything connects. The couple is passionate, after all, the plot captive and the reader will be anxious for the next volumes. Lisa Kleypas once again hit the mark. Now all I can do is wait for the Winterborne story.
This is one of the most elegant journeys to happily ever after I’ve read by this author. I adored Kathleen and Devon’s love story. Helen, the twins, and Hamlet were delightful!
Terrific read!
A favorite author and she did not disappoint. A variety of well developed characters I’m looking to be reading about in future books.
One of the true master seat of the craft. You will ADORE this authors characters and story lines. SUPERB ROMANCE!
