Great series!!
COLD HARBOR (Gibson Vaughn, #3) by Matthew FitzSimmons satisfied this fan immensely!
Even though I do not enjoy cliffhangers, Gibson Vaughn just got under my thriller loving skin and I had to keep reading on in the series. I am so glad that I did. I had no idea how Mr. FitzSimmons would get Gibson moving forward from book #2 to book #3, but he managed it with the additional emotional satisfaction of giving Gibson a sort of completion and happiness that he so deserved.
Cold Harbor begins with Gibson trying to regain control of his mental and physical health after being released from a CIA black-ops prison. For 18 months, all he had were the ghosts of his father and Suzanne to keep him company. As Gibson tries to return to the world of the living, the author continues to throw roadblocks in his way so that he can only go forward and not back to his old life. Gibson’s old friends return at just the right time to assist him by using him to assist them.
Many questions are answered and relationships resolved from the previous books, not always to the good, as the plot picks up pace to the thrilling conclusion.
This book is as intriguing as it is thrilling and I just love the Gibson Vaughn character. This is not a series that should be read as standalones out of order. Each book builds on the last and all the characters and situations are like a giant web.
Thanks very much to Thomas & Mercer and Net Galley for allowing me to read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Good, but not as good as the first 2. Still want to know what’s next for Gibson Vaughn though.
Gibson Vaughn starts out the book in confinement. Where? For how long? When will he be released? WILL he be released? He doesn’t know. He has company when he finally DOES get released from the CIA’s black-site custody – his father and his sister. EXCEPT, both are dead, and more reflect what he expects (or occasionally DOESN’T expect) they would say in such circumstances.
There are 3 basic subplots revolving around in this book – the police wanting to know where Vaughn was when his house burned down under suspicious circumstances, the need for revenge on the CIA operative who locked him up, and – finally, more than 1/2 way through the book – an explanation of just what “Cold Harbor” is, while plotting an operation against the organization.
If that description sounds a bit jumbled, it’s probably because that’s how I felt while reading (or rather, listening to the audio of) it. This is the 3rd book in the series (I did not know it WAS a series when I started), so characters and circumstances were not immediately fleshed out. I would assume that readers who have been along for the ride since Book #1 would have had an adequate grounding, but for me, I spent the first 1/2 of the book wondering if I should put it aside for later, and if “later” would ever come. Mind you, sticking it out, the 1st half of the book provided me with enough information to fully enjoy and appreciate the 2nd half, so slogging through was the right decision for me.
RATING: 3 1/2 Stars, rounded down to 3 stars where fractions of stars are not permitted.
Love this guy and all his quirks

Great characters and adventures. The twists and turns can be hair raising, but that’s what makes it so much fun!
Not a bad story, but not a stand alone book. I had read The Short Drop a few months back. Hadn’t read Poison Feather yet, but I was totally lost in this book. Had no idea what was going on and the book didn’t really explain.
Pretty good book. It ended great. I was a little confused at first, read some of the comments that you should read the first two books but I slowly got into a good rhythm. This guy has some bad luck, no? I like the part about the good read giveaways, since it was cosmical I won this book on good reads. I highly recommend this book but read the first two first.
Thank you good reads and Raul for this opportunity.
Cherie
Cold Harbor by Matthew FitzSimmons is the third book in th Gibson Vaughn series. I read the previous 2 books and this seems to wrap up the loose ends that were in the previous books. Cold Harbor will keep you turning pages and saying “I didn’t see that coming”. It is full of suspense with twists and turns that will keep you reading.
The plot and the characters are well developed. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I would suggest that you read The Short Drop and Poisonfeather before reading this one. You will not be sorry.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway but I did not start reading it until I finished the other two books by FitzSimmons. Fortunately, they were available in our Public Library.
I highly recommend this book and this series.
