Actually, take my advice: if you like kick-ass, beautiful, sexy but vulnerable ladies, written about in a humorous, sympathetic manner, just get the Omnibus and read it yourself. But if you want to know more detail, here are my notes:
I read Beth first as a stand-alone (it’s the first one in the omnibus). Now I’ve read the omnibus because I thoroughly enjoyed (and reviewed) Beth’s story, and I wanted to know more about her fellow succubi demons, Amanda, Pog and Jee; there’s also Reg, the houseboy and nominal manager, and we meet Cricket and Melitta, who are also sent by Delilah to join the team.
Jee is the “jerk-whisperer” to Reg, but the dom/sub relationship generates a two-way bond. When Reg is taken home by his mother, Jee decides she wants him back. She discovers not only that she is still a little girl at heart, but also a weretiger, as well as a demon succubus. She tracks Reg down to his mother’s house and inspires him to cut “the chains that bind him” to his mother. A very satisfying ending.
Melitta starts out short, fat, unattractive, a tannish-brownish yellow, unpopular, abused by her step-father. Delilah offers her a chance to become a succubus. Becoming a demon succubus in Pog’s team changes everything. She slowly catches on to all the evil things going on around her at her school. With her burgeoning succubus powers and lots of help from her team, she starts a crusade to put an end to the wickedness and evil that has infected her life for the past two years. Her crusade is wildly successful in this fast-paced story with a satisfactorily happy ending.
Amanda is feeling the stress of sensory overload; her demon senses are just too sensitive for the Earth after the “quiet” of ten years in the Regional office. Cricket Immerzang, 98 years old, gets a visit from Delilah, who enlists Cricket as a succubus. At the Lair, she is “adopted” by Amanda, and will share her bedroom. The two of them, along with the rest of the team, find out much more than they expected about their feelings. Cricket has to say goodbye to her extended family, and Amanda has to say goodbye to her “good soldier” persona. A very poignant and heartwarming story, lots of emotion.
Pog is the team leader and chief cook. When Ish, her Regional Office supervisor gets noticed by the Regional Office Senior Executive VP because his Demon Sluts (Pog’s team, led by Amanda) won a basketball tournament, he has to “lay low” in the “field” so the VP doesn’t feel threatened. He decides to move in with the demon succubi team (where else could he go?). Pog recognizes him as her school days boyfriend who betrayed her 10 years ago. Things get complicated in a hurry. Jee, who was her previous BFF, now has Reg; it seems everyone else has someone except her. We learn about Pog’s miserable life before becoming a succubus. Things get even more complicated when the VP wants to “make an example” of a traitorous supervisor, takes Pog instead of Ish, and puts her into Hell’s jail. This leads to a very dramatic final showdown, where we learn what’s been going on “behind the scenes”.
You could read the individual books, but it really helps to have the Books 1-5 Omnibus to binge on. I was laughing out loud at the many hilarious situations, descriptions and dialog. And be careful not to read when you’re hungry – the food descriptions are tantalizingly awesome, and will send you to the kitchen to chow down.
