“Phryne can not get enough of adventure and the reader can not get enough of Phryne.”—Deadly Pleasures
Looking for a riveting historical mystery series? This book is for you:
Perfect for Fans of Rhys Bowen and … This book is for you:
The London season is in full fling at the end of the roaring 1920s, but the Honourable Phryne Fisher—she of the green-gray eyes, diamant garters, and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions—is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia.
Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops, and communism—not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse—until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street. Tension and danger rise like steam, and Phryne must save herself and other young women before it’s too late. Find these historical mystery series in Kindle books or in print—this lady detective will chase criminals to the end of the line!

So much fun!! Like a cozy mystery but a bit more risqué. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (find it on Netflix!) is one of my all-time favorite TV shows, and the book did not disappoint! I want to be Phryne Fisher when I grow up.
I don’t have to tell many people about the wonders of Phryne Fisher. Like many others, i made my way through the Miss Fisher television series before i ever read the books and loved every minute. I was just worried that the books wouldn’t be as good. Quite the contrary. They’re even better. Phryne Fisher is a brilliant character that many writers …
In 1920s Melbourne pilot and daredevil Phryne Fisher is employed ot investigate a young woman’s mysterious illness. It seems that her husband might be slowly poisoning her. Fisher camps out in a luxury hotel and befriends a couple of precocious cabbies, who help her solve the mystery. Quickly Phryne is drawn into the Melbourne underworld, looking …
Kerry Greenwood creates a wonderful picture of 1929 Melbourne, Australia in the first of the Phryne Fisher Murder Mysteries. The characters, led by the incomparable Phryne, are well-rounded, the mystery is fascinating, and the ending is everything a mystery fan would want. Looking forward to reading more Miss Fisher mysteries!
There is a website I read, previously.tv, that every summer, when most TV shows are on rerun that has a feature called “the wheel of murder”. That column basically reviews international mystery shows that are available for streaming on various sites. The ‘Miss FIsher Murder Mysteries’ were reviewed sometime last year, watched the series and …
I adore Phryne Fisher. Saw the television series first, then read the books. Wonderful stuff. Love the Australian setting.
So glad I came across this series from Kerry Greenwood. I watched the series on TV and loved them and now I get to read the series in book form!
Loved the TV series. The books are good too!
I adore the Miss Fisher TV series. I’ve had book one in the series on my Kindle forever. I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it.
5 stars.
Highly entertaining. Phyrne Fisher is a brilliant character. Strong, sexy, funny. I can’t wait to read more in the series.
Miss Phryne Fisher is one of my top favourite leading ladies, and the 1920s Australia setting is beautifully done – tons of fun!
1920s, Australia, investigation, fun
I’m so glad that I saw the TV series first! Of course the plots are only loosely resembling each other, but it really helps to have the visual images when reading about things like the Hispano Suisse! Did I mention that I prefer the original (as in books)? Loved it!
Cocaine Blues is historical mystery set in Australia in the years between the World Wars. The auhot does a smashing job describing the societal standards for women and the conditions under which the various classes lived.
Her characters each have individuality, and are drawn with lots of descriptive language.️️
A delightful read.
So to me this is more a 3.5 but since you can’t do half-stars I gave it some thought and this book definitely deserves the rounding up to 4 stars instead of being rounded down. It was such fun to read my first book in this series as I’ve been enjoying watching my way through the tv series for awhile. Reading this made me …
I have to say I’m biased as I love all of Kerry Greenwood’s books. Phryne Fisher is a fun character and I’ve enjoyed her in the books and, after disassociating them a bit from the books, the tv series. Cocaine Blues is a great intro to Phryne’s world. If you’re like me, once you start, you have to keep going just to see what she’ll do next.
This is the first of The Phryne Fisher Mysteries, set in Melbourne, Australia in the 1920s.
It’s a wonderful romp – with bodies. The Honourable Miss Fisher with her wonderful, elegant clothes and her pearl-handled revolver is a force to be reckoned with. Together with a delightful supporting cast, she cleverly solves mysteries and murders before …
I came to Kerry Greenwood thanks to the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries TV series. I knew going in that the books would probably have some differences, some significant, some not. I’m so glad I picked up the books! Phryne is such a vibrant character, both in the book and in Essie Davis’s portrayal. She’s a wonderful heroine- flawed yet perfect …
Rollicking good fun with memorable characters. I highly recommend this series. Totally addictive.
This book is the perfect beginning of a 20-book series. If you enjoy spending time with characters, this series is for you! Greenwood creates complex plots against 1920’s Australia. Her writing is brilliantly witty and often thought provoking. A great read!
